Chapter 4: The Eighteen-Thousand-Dollar Secret

Nobody moved when the young woman entered carrying the newborn.

The baby was wrapped in a faded blue blanket, his tiny face partly hidden beneath a white knitted hat. He made a soft noise, then settled against her chest.

Daniel stared at him.

For seven months, he had imagined this moment.

He had imagined holding his child for the first time, counting his fingers, and whispering promises that he would always protect him.

Instead, he was standing in a restaurant surrounded by forty witnesses while his wife and mother were being exposed for something he couldn't begin to understand.

The young woman approached slowly.

"My name is Rachel," she said.

"I'm his birth mother.""

Daniel swallowed.

"What's his name?""

Rachel looked down at the baby.

"Noah.""

Daniel repeated it quietly.

"Noah.""

Claire immediately stepped forward.

"Daniel, don't listen to her. She's manipulating you.""

Rachel turned toward her.

"Really? You told me your husband was dead. You told me he couldn't come to the hospital. You told me you were handling everything alone.""

Daniel looked at Claire.

"What?""

Rachel continued.

"Three weeks ago, I gave birth. Claire visited me twice. She told me the adoption was going perfectly and that you were excited.""

Daniel's hands trembled.

"She visited you?""

Rachel nodded.

"She brought clothes, blankets, and paperwork. Then, two days before discharge, she told me there had been a family emergency.""

Claire shook her head.

"That's not what happened.""

Rachel ignored her.

"She said you had discovered I wasn't the baby's biological mother.""

Daniel frowned.

"You're his birth mother.""

"Exactly.""

Rachel adjusted Noah's blanket.

"Then she told me you had decided you didn't want him because you were afraid he might have medical problems.""

Daniel looked horrified.

"I never said that.""

"I know that now.""

Rachel reached into her coat pocket and produced a folded document.

"Then your mother called me.""

Margaret immediately stepped forward.

"Young lady, you need to be careful about what you're accusing people of.""

Rachel looked directly at her.

"You offered me eighteen thousand dollars to walk away.""

A collective gasp swept through the room.

My mother lifted her chin.

"I provided financial assistance. That's all.""

Rachel laughed without humor.

"You called it assistance? You said I was ruining your son's life.""

Margaret's face tightened.

"I was protecting my family.""

"By paying me to disappear?""

"I never asked you to disappear!""

Rachel pulled out her phone.

"I still have the messages.""

Daniel looked at our mother.

"Mom, is this true?""

Margaret remained silent.

He stepped closer.

"Did you give her eighteen thousand dollars?""

"I was trying to prevent a disaster.""

"What disaster?""

Margaret finally exploded.

"Your marriage! Your reputation! Do you know what people would say if they discovered your wife couldn't have children?""

Daniel stared at her.

"So you decided my wife should pretend to be pregnant?""

Margaret's expression changed.

"Claire made that decision herself.""

Claire turned toward her.

"You told me nobody would accept an adopted child!""

"And you agreed!""

"You said you'd handle everything!""

My mother pointed at her.

"Because you kept asking me for money!""

Daniel closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he didn't speak.

Then he turned toward Rachel.

"Did you receive the eighteen thousand?""

Rachel nodded.

"I received it. I thought it was compensation for medical expenses and the disruption caused by the delayed placement. Your mother said you had approved it.""

Daniel shook his head.

"I didn't know anything about it.""

"I believe you.""

Rachel's eyes filled with tears.

"I never wanted money to replace my son. I wanted him to have a stable home. I was told you were a good man who wanted to raise him.""

Daniel looked at Noah.

The baby stretched one tiny hand outside the blanket.

Daniel took an involuntary step forward, then stopped.

"Can I...?""

Rachel understood.

She carefully placed Noah in his arms.

My brother looked down.

His entire face crumpled.

"Hello, little man," he whispered.

Noah opened his eyes briefly.

Daniel touched his tiny hand.

"I thought I had missed you.""

Rachel wiped her cheeks.

"You haven't.""

For the first time that afternoon, the room felt less like a courtroom and more like a family witnessing something heartbreaking.

Then Claire ruined it.

She stepped forward and reached for Noah.

"Give him to me.""

Rachel immediately moved back.

"No.""

"I'm his intended mother!""

"You told me your husband had rejected him.""

"That was a misunderstanding!""

Daniel turned toward Claire.

"Don't touch him.""

She froze.

"Daniel, he's supposed to be our son.""

He looked at her.

"You told his mother I didn't want him. You told me I was going to have a biological child. You took our savings. You lied to everyone.""

"I was scared!""

"And what about him?""

Daniel glanced down at Noah.

"What was he supposed to think when the people who promised to love him suddenly disappeared?""

Claire burst into tears.

Margaret grabbed her handbag.

"I'm leaving.""

But before she reached the door, Rachel spoke again.

"There's one more thing.""

My mother stopped.

Rachel looked at Daniel.

"The eighteen thousand dollars wasn't the only payment.""

Daniel slowly raised his head.

"What do you mean?""

Rachel handed him another printed statement.

It showed a transfer of $27,000 from a joint account belonging to Daniel and Claire.

The recipient was a company called Wilson Family Consulting.

Daniel stared at the name.

Then he looked at our mother.

"That's your company.""

May you like

Margaret's face went completely white.

And Daniel finally understood that the eighteen thousand dollars had only been the beginning.
