Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Door

“Michael, I know you're in there.””

Richard Collins's voice sounded almost friendly.

That made it worse.

I held Sophie against my chest while Daniel moved toward the bedroom door. He picked up a heavy wooden lamp from the nightstand.

“Don't open it,” I whispered.

Richard knocked again.

“Michael, this is getting ridiculous. We need to discuss what you've found.””

Daniel mouthed something I couldn't hear.

Then my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

*Don't let him inside. He isn't alone.*

I looked toward the front window.

A black SUV was parked beside the cottage. Its engine was running.

There was another man in the driver's seat.

I moved Sophie behind me.

“Richard, I'm calling the police.””

A short silence followed.

Then Richard laughed.

“You really think they'll believe a distraught father who just canceled his wedding and stole confidential legal documents?””

“Those documents belong to my wife.””

“Your wife is dead, Michael.””

His words hit harder than they should have.

I felt Sophie grip the back of my shirt.

Daniel stepped closer to the door.

“Michael, he's trying to provoke you.””

Richard knocked again.

“Open the door. Amanda is waiting in the car. She wants to explain.””

I stared at the wooden panel.

“Amanda is with you?””

“Of course. We're trying to resolve this peacefully.””

I glanced at the second cellphone.

A notification appeared.

*UNKNOWN NUMBER: The bedroom has a back window. Leave now.*

I looked at Daniel.

He understood immediately.

The cottage had a narrow window overlooking the overgrown garden. It was barely large enough for an adult to squeeze through, but Sophie could fit easily.

Daniel lifted the latch.

“Michael, get her out.””

I helped Sophie through first, lowering her carefully onto the grass. Daniel followed.

I was halfway through when the front door suddenly shook.

Richard was kicking it.

“MICHAEL! DON'T MAKE THIS WORSE!””

I dropped onto the grass.

We ran toward the trees.

Behind us, the front door burst open.

I heard footsteps entering the cottage.

Then Richard shouted.

“THE BOX! FIND THE BOX!””

Daniel led us toward the road, keeping low behind the bushes.

We reached his car just as the black SUV began moving.

“Get in!”” he yelled.

I strapped Sophie into her seat.

Daniel started the engine.

The SUV pulled out behind us.

For the next ten minutes, neither of us spoke.

Sophie finally broke the silence.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Are the bad people going to take me?””

I looked at her in the rearview mirror.

“No. I promise.””

She nodded, then looked down at her hands.

“Mommy said secrets are sometimes like spiders.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“She said they hide in dark places until somebody turns on the light.””

I swallowed.

Emily had always spoken to Sophie in little riddles.

I wondered how many things she'd tried to tell me before she died.

We drove directly to a police station.

After explaining the threats, I showed an officer the messages, the photographs, and the documents from the metal box.

He listened carefully.

But when I mentioned Richard's name, his expression changed.

“Richard Collins?””

“You know him?””

The officer leaned back.

“His firm handles legal matters for several prominent families in this county. I'll need to speak with my supervisor before taking any action.””

I felt frustration rising.

“My four-year-old daughter was approached in her bedroom by this man.””

The officer looked at Sophie.

His expression softened.

“I'm going to make sure someone takes a proper statement.””

An hour later, we were sitting in a private interview room with Detective Rachel Morgan.

She was in her forties, with short brown hair and a notebook balanced on one knee.

She examined the photographs from the cottage.

“Mr. Bennett, I need you to understand something. These documents suggest financial misconduct, but they don't establish who entered your daughter's room.””

“I have Sophie's account.””

Rachel nodded.

“We'll document that carefully.””

Then she examined the photograph Emily had left behind.

“Do you know what happened in your wife's accident?””

“She lost control of her car during a storm. That's what the report said.””

“Was another vehicle involved?””

I shook my head.

“Not according to the report.””

Rachel studied the photograph again.

“Do you remember the date?””

I told her.

She wrote something down.

“I'm going to request the original accident file.””

My phone rang.

Margaret.

I answered immediately.

“Michael, did you find the box?””

“Yes. Richard came after us.””

“I was afraid of that.””

“Margaret, what's happening?””

She took a breath.

“Emily discovered that Richard had been moving money through a company registered under a false name. That company purchased properties, then transferred them into trusts controlled by people who never appeared publicly.””

“And Amanda?””

“She was supposed to marry you, gain access to your assets, and establish herself as Sophie's guardian.””

I closed my eyes.

“But why Sophie?””

“Because your daughter inherited something much more valuable than money.””

I looked at Detective Morgan.

“What?””

Margaret's answer was quiet.

“The controlling interest in a property company Emily's grandfather established. Its land holdings have increased dramatically in value.””

I felt sick.

“How much?””

“More than twelve million dollars.””

Daniel swore under his breath.

Margaret continued.

“Michael, Emily created a protection clause. Nobody can transfer those assets without the independent trustee's approval. But if you lose legal guardianship, someone else can petition to manage the inheritance.””

“And they want Amanda to do that.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Sophie, who was drawing a picture with a police officer's pen.

Then Margaret added:

“There's something else. Emily didn't die immediately after the accident.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She was conscious when the paramedics arrived. Before she lost consciousness, she told them something about a second vehicle.””

Detective Morgan immediately looked up.

“Do you have a source for that?””

Margaret went quiet.

Then she said:

“The paramedic who treated Emily kept a copy of his original report. His name is Thomas Reed.””

I repeated the name.

“Thomas Reed?””

Margaret hesitated.

“Yes. And Michael, there's something you need to know about him.””

May you like

“What?””

“He's Amanda's father.””
