Chapter 12: The Warehouse of Lies

I wanted to run straight to the old Bennett warehouse.

I wanted to tear through every door until I found Sophie.

But Detective Morgan stopped me.

“If you go there without a plan, David wins.””

“My daughter is missing!””

“And we're going to find her. But I need you thinking clearly.””

I paced across the police station.

Daniel sat with his head in his hands.

My mother was being escorted to a secure location.

Margaret had regained consciousness at the hospital. She had suffered a blow to the head but was expected to recover.

She remembered one thing.

A man had entered the safe house wearing a delivery uniform.

He'd carried a large box.

She'd noticed the name on the delivery label.

Bennett Industrial Storage.

The old warehouse.

David had used the property as a storage facility for years.

Detective Morgan spread a map across the table.

“We have two possible entrances. The main loading bay and a rear service door. There are also several abandoned office units connected to the building.””

I pointed at the map.

“He knows I'm coming.””

“Yes.””

“He'll expect me to bring the documents.””

“Exactly. That's why we're going to give him what he expects without handing over the originals.””

Jennifer Parker arrived carrying a laptop.

“I've made digital copies of everything,” she said.

“The original documents are now secured with the probate court.””

Detective Morgan nodded.

“Good. We'll prepare a controlled exchange.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You're staying with the police.””

He shook his head.

“I'm coming.””

“Daniel, no.””

“Michael, that's my niece.””

I stared at him.

Then I nodded.

“Stay behind the officers. Don't do anything stupid.””

He managed a weak smile.

“I learned that from you.””

For the first time that day, I almost smiled back.

At 10:15 the next morning, we arrived at the warehouse.

The building stood near an old industrial road, surrounded by rusted fencing and abandoned vehicles.

I carried a black briefcase containing copies of the documents.

A small recording device was attached beneath my jacket.

Detective Morgan and her team were positioned outside.

I entered alone.

The warehouse smelled of oil, dust, and wet concrete.

Several overhead lights flickered.

At the far end, a chair sat beneath a hanging lamp.

David stood beside it.

He looked older than I remembered.

His hair was silver, and his expensive suit seemed strangely out of place in the abandoned building.

He smiled when he saw me.

“Michael. You came.””

“Where's Sophie?””

“First, the documents.””

I placed the briefcase on the table.

“Let me see her.””

David opened the case.

He examined the papers carefully.

Then he laughed.

“Copies?””

I didn't answer.

He closed the briefcase.

“Still your father's son. Always thought you were smarter than everyone else.””

“Where is my daughter?””

David pointed toward a small office.

A door opened.

Sophie appeared.

Her face was pale.

Her flower-shaped hair clip was missing.

But she was standing.

Alive.

“Daddy!””

I started forward.

David raised one hand.

“Not so fast.””

Sophie began crying.

“Daddy, I want to go home!””

I forced myself to stay still.

“I'm here, sweetheart.””

David looked at her.

“See? Your father always comes when you call.””

I stared at him.

“Let her go.””

“Give me the original ledger.””

“You know I don't have it.””

“Then tell me where it is.””

I remained silent.

David sighed.

“Your father was exactly like this. He believed loyalty was more important than survival.””

“You murdered him.””

David's smile disappeared.

“Your father destroyed this family.””

“He was trying to stop you stealing from it.””

“I was his firstborn son! Everything he built should have been mine.””

“You stole from your own father.””

David stepped closer.

“He promised me the company. Then he changed the trust. He gave you control.

He gave your mother everything. And when I confronted him, he called me a criminal.””

“Because you were one.””

David slapped the table.

“Do you know what it's like watching someone younger inherit everything you were promised?””

I stared at him.

“So you killed him?””

He laughed bitterly.

“I didn't intend for him to die that night. Richard was supposed to frighten him. But the car went too far.””

My stomach twisted.

“And Emily?””

David looked toward Sophie.

“Your wife found the records. She was about to destroy everything.””

“You had her killed?””

“I gave Richard instructions to stop her.””

“Did he deliberately hit her car?””

David didn't answer.

That was enough.

Sophie suddenly spoke.

“Uncle David?””

He turned.

“What, sweetheart?””

“Why did you take Mommy's things?””

David's expression softened unnaturally.

“Because your mommy had something that belonged to me.””

Sophie shook her head.

“No. Mommy said bad people always say that.””

I felt tears burning behind my eyes.

David's jaw tightened.

“Children shouldn't repeat things they don't understand.””

Then he looked at me.

“Now give me the original trust agreement.””

I opened my mouth.

Before I could answer, another voice came from the entrance.

“David, stop.””

Amanda stepped into the warehouse.

She looked exhausted.

Her hair was disheveled, and there was a bruise near her left temple.

David turned sharply.

“What are you doing here?””

Amanda ignored him.

She looked directly at me.

“Michael, you need to get Sophie out of here.””

David grabbed her arm.

“You stupid woman. You were supposed to stay away.””

Amanda pulled free.

“You told me the plan was only about the money!””

David laughed.

“That's what you wanted to believe.””

Amanda began crying.

“You said nobody would get hurt!””

“You knew what happened to Emily.””

I froze.

Amanda looked at me.

“Michael, I tried to stop him.””

I stared at her.

“You recorded yourself saying you'd send my daughter away.””

“I was scared.””

“You planned to take her inheritance.””

“I thought it would be temporary.””

“You watched her cry every night.””

Amanda lowered her head.

“I know.””

David pulled a small object from his jacket.

A black cellphone.

The same model as the one Sophie had found.

He held it up.

“You're both making this very difficult.””

Then he pressed a button.

A loud metallic crash echoed from the rear of the warehouse.

The lights went out.

Sophie screamed.

I heard footsteps running across the concrete.

Then a gunshot.

Detective Morgan's voice shouted from somewhere near the entrance.

“POLICE! EVERYONE STAY WHERE YOU ARE!””

I dropped to my knees and reached for Sophie.

Her little arms wrapped around my neck.

“Daddy!””

“I've got you!””

Emergency lights flickered on.

David was gone.

Amanda was lying on the floor, holding her shoulder.

Daniel rushed toward us with two officers.

“Michael! Are you both okay?””

I checked Sophie.

She was crying, but she was unharmed.

Then Detective Morgan approached.

“David escaped through the rear loading bay. We have officers pursuing him.””

I looked toward Amanda.

“Where is he going?””

She pressed her hand against her shoulder.

“His private office.””

“Why?””

Her face changed.

“Because that's where he keeps the original trust agreement.””

I stared at her.

“What original agreement?””

Amanda swallowed.

“The one your father signed before he died.””

She looked directly at me.

“And Michael, there's something else.””

I tightened my arms around Sophie.

“What?””

Amanda began crying harder.

“David didn't just steal your inheritance.””

She pointed toward the warehouse office.

“He changed your father's final will.””

Then she whispered the words that turned my blood cold.

“Your father left everything to you and your brother Daniel. But the original document names a third beneficiary.””

I looked at Daniel.

He stared back at me.

Amanda continued.

“Your father's firstborn child wasn't David.””

I frowned.

“Then who?””

Amanda looked toward the office.

And for the first time, I understood why David had spent seventeen years pretending to be someone he wasn't.

“David stole the identity of your father's real firstborn son.””

She paused.

“Because that son is still alive.””

Sophie tugged at my jacket.

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

She was holding something she'd found in her dress pocket.

A small folded photograph.

On the back was Emily's handwriting.

The truth is in the name.

I turned it over.

The photograph showed my father standing beside a young woman.

And in her arms was a newborn baby.

May you like

Written beneath the picture was a name.

*Richard Collins.*
