Chapter 14: My Father's Final Letter
My mother arrived at the police station forty minutes later.
She was accompanied by two officers and looked terrified.
When I told her what Richard had said, she closed her eyes.
“Michael, I hoped you'd never have to know.””
I felt anger rising again.
“I'm tired of people deciding what I can handle.””
She sat down.
“You deserve the truth.””
Daniel joined us.
Detective Morgan had reached the old mansion, but the police were still securing the property.
Richard's car had been found abandoned outside.
David was nowhere to be seen.
My mother folded her hands.
“After your father died, I discovered that David had changed several pages of the estate documents. I confronted him. He threatened to kill you and Daniel.””
“So you disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“But you could have gone to the police.””
“I tried.””
She looked at Detective Morgan.
“The first officer I spoke to was connected to Richard. He told me there was no evidence and warned me that making accusations could cost me custody of my sons.””
I stared at her.
“Then what happened?””
“David arranged a false death certificate. He convinced everyone I'd died in another state. He even paid someone to confirm my identity.””
My mother paused.
“After that, I received a letter from your father.””
I leaned forward.
“Where is it?””
She reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.
The paper was yellow with age.
My name was written across it.
I opened it carefully.
Michael,
If your mother has given you this letter, then the people I feared have finally exposed themselves.
I have spent years trying to protect my children from a man who believes blood gives him the right to destroy everything.
David is not my firstborn son. Richard is.
I made mistakes with Richard. I was young, selfish, and afraid of losing the woman I eventually married. I allowed another family to raise him without telling him the truth.
When he returned, I tried to make things right. But he had already been poisoned by years of resentment.
I stopped reading.
Daniel sat beside me.
I continued.
I want you to understand that Richard was not born evil. I failed him. But that does not excuse what he has done.
He and David are different kinds of dangerous. David wants the company. Richard wants everyone who rejected him to suffer.
My hands trembled.
I have placed the original ownership documents in the family vault. The key is hidden inside the wooden clock in my study.
There is also one final provision.
The company cannot be transferred to any beneficiary who participated in fraud, intimidation, or violence against another beneficiary.
If Richard or David attempts to claim control through deception, the entire controlling interest passes into a protected trust for Sophie.
I stopped.
My father had anticipated everything.
The letter continued.
Your daughter is the future of this family, Michael. Not because she will inherit money, but because she deserves a life without the lies that destroyed ours.
Tell her I would have loved her very much.
I couldn't finish the final line.
Daniel placed a hand on my shoulder.
For a moment, I was nineteen again, standing beside my father's grave.
Except now I knew that the man we'd buried had left us a map out of the nightmare.
Detective Morgan returned.
“We found the vault.””
I stood.
“Did you find the documents?””
“Yes. But there's a problem.””
“What?””
“The vault was opened before we arrived. Someone removed the original will.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“David.””
Morgan nodded.
“But we found something else.””
She placed a small digital recorder on the table.
“Your father hid this behind the vault's interior panel.””
We listened.
A man's voice filled the room.
My father's.
“If this recording is being played, then David or Richard has attempted to access the estate illegally.””
He paused.
“I want to make one thing clear. The company belongs to my family, but no one has a greater right to it than the people who protect it.””
Then another voice interrupted.
Richard.
“You chose them over me.””
My father answered:
“I chose to protect the people who trusted me.””
Richard laughed.
“And what about the child you abandoned?””
“I never abandoned you.””
“You let me grow up believing I was unwanted!””
My father's voice became softer.
“I was wrong. But I was trying to find you.””
A chair scraped across the floor.
Then Richard said:
“It's too late.””
The recording ended.
I looked at my mother.
“Was this the last time they saw each other?””
She nodded.
“Two days before your father died.””
Detective Morgan leaned forward.
“There is one more thing. We found a second recording on the device.””
She pressed play.
This time, David's voice came through.
“Richard, the accident must happen tonight. Your father has already signed the papers.””
Richard answered:
“You said we wouldn't hurt him.””
David replied:
“He's already chosen Michael. What do you expect me to do?””
Then came a sound.
A struggle.
And Richard's voice:
“Give me the keys.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Detective Morgan immediately sent it to the forensic team.
“This could establish what happened before the accident.””
I felt a wave of relief.
Then an officer entered.
“Detective, we found David.””
“Where?””
“Outside the courthouse. He's been arrested.””
I almost collapsed.
But the officer wasn't finished.
“There's a complication. Richard surrendered voluntarily.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
The officer glanced at Detective Morgan.
“He claims he has information about the person who actually killed Jonathan Bennett.””
My mother began shaking.
“What person?””
The officer looked at me.
“He says your father wasn't killed by David or Richard.””
I stared at him.
“Then who?””
The officer took a breath.
“He says your father was killed by someone who has been protecting your family for seventeen years.””
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
*Michael, I'm sorry. I tried to protect you.*
Then a second message appeared.
*Come alone if you want to know what really happened to Emily.*
The sender's name appeared beneath it.
Thomas Reed.
I looked toward Detective Morgan.
“Didn't you say Thomas was in custody?””
She checked her phone.
Then her expression changed.
“He was transferred to a secure facility two hours ago.””
I stared at the message.
Another notification appeared.
A photograph.
Thomas was standing beside a woman.
My mother.
Except the photograph was recent.
It had been taken that morning.
I turned toward her.
“Where did you go today?””
She began crying.
“Michael, I can explain.””
I stepped back.
“Mom?””
She whispered:
“I met Thomas because he promised he knew where Emily hid the final recording.””
Detective Morgan immediately reached for her radio.
But my mother looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
Then she said:
“Thomas didn't kill your father, Michael.””
May you like
She swallowed.
“I did.””
