Chapter 8: The Person I Trusted Most

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The room felt impossibly quiet.

The kind of silence that comes after something breaks.

I stared at the signature.

A name I had seen thousands of times.

A name attached to meetings.

Reports.

Late-night strategy sessions.

Someone who knew how Bennett Technologies worked.

Someone who knew where every weakness was.

Rachel stepped closer.

“No.””

Her voice was barely audible.

I looked at her.

“You recognize it.””

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

Because the reaction was enough.

The person who betrayed me was not a stranger.

It was someone we both knew.

“Who?”” Daniel asked.

Rachel closed her eyes.

Then she whispered:

“Marcus.””

I felt my chest tighten.

Marcus Cole.

My chief operations officer.

The person who had been with my company since the beginning.

The person who had helped me build it from a small technology firm into a global group.

I remembered the nights we spent fixing impossible problems.

The moments when everyone else gave up and Marcus stayed.

I remembered trusting him.

And now his signature was on Ethan’s agreement.

“No,” I said quietly.

Rachel looked at me.

“Olivia…”

“No.””

I stood.

“There has to be another explanation.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I thought the same.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

My eyes hardened.

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because I didn’t have proof.””

I wanted to be angry.

But I understood.

Proof mattered.

Especially when betrayal came from someone close.

Rachel opened another file.

“This agreement was hidden.””

“How hidden?””

“Very.””

She turned the laptop.

“Marcus used an external server.””

I stared.

“Why would he do that?””

Daniel answered.

“Because he knew you would find it otherwise.””

That hurt.

Not because someone betrayed me.

I had learned betrayal was common.

It hurt because Marcus knew exactly how to hide it from me.

Because he knew me.

The phone on my desk rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A familiar voice replied.

“Olivia.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Marcus.””

A pause.

Then:

“I know you found the documents.””

I looked at Rachel.

She immediately began recording.

“How long?””

Silence.

“Marcus.””

He sighed.

“Long enough.””

My jaw tightened.

“How long have you been working with Ethan?””

“Working with him?””

A bitter laugh.

“That’s what you think this is?””

“Then explain.””

His voice changed.

Not guilty.

Angry.

“You think I betrayed you.””

“Didn’t you?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

“I saved this company.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“You built Bennett Technologies because you believed people mattered.””

He sounded almost emotional.

“But you forgot something.””

“What?””

“Companies don’t survive because of kindness.””

I looked at the documents.

“They survive because someone makes the hard choices.””

I shook my head.

“You sold information to Ethan.””

“I made a deal.””

“Same thing.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“Because unlike Ethan, I actually understood what your company needed.””

I stood.

“You don’t get to justify betrayal by calling it strategy.””

Silence.

Then Marcus said something that made me freeze.

“You still don’t understand what Ethan was planning.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus continued.

“The merger wasn’t about Harrington Dynamics.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then what was it about?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Bennett Technologies.””

The line went silent.

I gripped the phone.

“Explain.””

But Marcus had already disconnected.

Rachel looked at me.

“What did he mean?””

I didn’t answer.

Because deep down, I already knew.

Ethan never wanted to join my world.

He wanted to take it.

Daniel opened the agreement again.

“Olivia.””

I looked at him.

“There’s a section here.””

“What section?””

His expression changed.

“The acquisition clause.””

I walked closer.

I read the words.

Then I felt the room disappear.

Because the agreement wasn’t designed to merge our companies.

It was designed to transfer ownership.

Of mine.

Rachel whispered:

“Ethan was trying to steal Bennett Technologies.””

And then my phone received one final message.

From Marcus.

May you like

Only one sentence.

*You need to know why Ethan chose you.*
