Chapter 12: The Father’s Secret

Nobody moved.

Ethan stood in the doorway like he belonged there.

Like he hadn’t just destroyed my trust.

Like he hadn’t spent days trying to ruin my company.

His eyes stayed on the letter.

“My father warned you about me.””

The sentence was not a question.

It was a realization.

I held the paper tighter.

“You knew about this.””

Ethan looked away.

For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.

“I knew your father left something.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“What else did you know?””

Ethan ignored her.

His eyes stayed on me.

“Your father hated the Harrington family.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Silence.

Then Ethan entered the room.

Slowly.

Carefully.

“I didn’t tell you because I thought you would leave.””

I laughed.

“Again?””

His face tightened.

“No.””

“You always have a reason.””

He stopped.

“I know how this sounds.””

“It sounds exactly like the truth.””

Daniel moved between us.

“Why did your father pay you?””

Ethan looked at him.

“That’s complicated.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“It’s simple.””

He pointed at the documents.

“You stole from us.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“I saved us.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You destroyed us.””

Ethan looked back at me.

“Olivia, you don’t understand.””

I almost smiled.

“Then explain.””

He was quiet.

Finally:

“Your father and my father were partners.””

I frowned.

“My father never mentioned him.””

“Because they weren’t just partners.””

The room went still.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan looked at the letter.

“They were enemies.””

Rachel frowned.

“Enemies?””

Ethan nodded.

“Years ago, Harrington Dynamics and Bennett Technologies were competing for the same technology patents.””

I listened carefully.

“Your father won.””

“And yours?””

“He lost everything.””

I looked at him.

“So this is revenge?””

“No.””

His answer came instantly.

“I wanted to prove something.””

“What?””

“That the Bennett family wasn’t untouchable.””

There it was.

The truth.

Not love.

Not desperation.

Pride.

Ethan continued.

“Your father humiliated mine.””

I shook my head.

“My father built something.””

“And my family lost because of him.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Your family lost because they couldn’t accept losing.””

Ethan looked hurt.

But he didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

I held up the letter.

“My father warned me about you.””

His face changed.

“I know.””

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

A long silence.

Then he said:

“Because I needed to know if you would choose me anyway.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“I wanted to know if Olivia Bennett would love Ethan Harrington.””

His voice broke slightly.

“Not the name. Not the money. Not the companies.””

I looked at him.

“You built a trap to test my love?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

He looked down.

“I built a plan because I was afraid.””

The room stayed silent.

For a moment, I saw the man beneath everything.

The insecure boy.

The person who spent his life feeling second.

Then I remembered the wine.

The lies.

The documents.

The betrayal.

Fear explained his choices.

It didn’t excuse them.

I stepped back.

“You don’t get to hurt people because you’re afraid.””

Ethan looked at me.

“You’re right.””

The answer surprised me.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And his expression changed.

“What?””

Everyone noticed.

Something was wrong.

He answered.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then:

“No.””

He stood straighter.

“That’s impossible.””

I watched his face lose color.

“Who?””

Another pause.

Then Ethan whispered:

“My mother.””

He looked at me.

And for the first time since I met him, he looked completely terrified.

He lowered the phone.

“Victoria wasn’t protecting me.””

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Ethan stared at the documents.

“She was protecting herself.””

Rachel looked confused.

“From what?””

Ethan slowly looked toward me.

“From the person who started all of this.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Ethan answered quietly.

“The person who taught me how to do it.””

May you like

A pause.

“Your father.””
