Chapter 11: The Last Person Standing
The Harrington Dynamics building looked different at night.
During the day, it represented success.
Glass walls.
Luxury offices.
A symbol of power.
But at midnight, it looked empty.
Cold.
Almost abandoned.
I stood in the lobby with Rachel and Daniel beside me.
Security had allowed us inside after Daniel used his executive access.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
Something had happened here.
The guards avoided eye contact.
Employees who remained late looked nervous.
Finally, we reached the executive floor.
Daniel opened the door.
And stopped.
I looked past him.
Marcus was sitting in one of the conference rooms.
Alive.
But exhausted.
His shirt was wrinkled.
His face was pale.
A security officer stood nearby.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Marcus looked at me.
For a second, shame crossed his face.
Then he looked away.
“I failed.””
I walked inside.
“No.””
He looked surprised.
“No?””
“You betrayed me.””
His expression fell.
“But you’re still here.””
Silence.
I sat across from him.
“Tell me what happened.””
Marcus rubbed his hands together.
“Ethan knew I had the backup files.””
“When?””
“Before I called you.””
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded.
“He tracked him.””
Marcus continued.
“He invited me here.””
“To threaten you?””
“No.””
He looked at the floor.
“To convince me.””
I frowned.
“Convince you?””
“He said he could still fix everything.””
I almost laughed.
“Of course he did.””
Marcus looked at me.
“He believed he was protecting himself.””
“That’s what everyone tells themselves before they hurt people.””
Marcus accepted that.
“You’re right.””
The honesty surprised me.
Then he reached into his pocket.
“I have something.””
He placed a small drive on the table.
“What is it?””
“The real plan.””
Daniel picked it up.
“What’s different about this?””
Marcus looked at him.
“This wasn’t made for investors.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who was it made for?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Ethan.””
We connected the drive.
Files appeared.
Thousands of pages.
Emails.
Audio recordings.
Private conversations.
Rachel began reviewing them.
Then she stopped.
“Olivia.””
“What?””
She turned the screen.
“This is a payment record.””
I leaned closer.
A transfer.
From a private account.
To Ethan.
Not from Harrington Dynamics.
From someone else.
“Who sent this?””
Rachel opened the information.
Then her face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
She looked at Daniel.
“Your father.””
The room froze.
Daniel stared.
“My father is dead.””
Rachel nodded.
“The account was created before his death.””
I looked at the numbers.
Millions.
Hidden.
Transferred.
Ethan had not been acting alone.
“There’s more,” Marcus said.
I looked at him.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“Your father knew.””
I froze.
“What did you say?””
“Your father knew about Harrington Dynamics.””
I stood.
“My father died years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then how?””
Marcus opened another file.
A letter.
My father’s name.
My hands shook.
I opened it.
The handwriting was familiar.
A handwriting I hadn’t seen since childhood.
*Olivia,*
*If you are reading this, then someone has finally forced you to see what I tried to hide.*
My breathing stopped.
The letter continued.
*The Harrington family has always been dangerous.*
Daniel looked away.
Rachel stayed silent.
*But the greatest danger is not their ambition. It is their belief that everything can be owned.*
I kept reading.
*I trusted the wrong people once. I hope you do not repeat my mistake.*
Then the final line.
The one that made my entire body go cold.
*If Ethan Harrington ever enters your life, do not trust the reason he gives you.*
I dropped the letter.
Because my father had known.
Years before Ethan proposed.
Years before the dinner.
Years before the betrayal.
He had warned me.
But why?
The conference room door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood there.
Not security.
Not an employee.
Someone I recognized.
Someone I never expected to see.
Ethan.
He looked at the letter in my hand.
Then at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“You finally found it.””
