Chapter 2: The Name They Forgot

The silence after Thomas spoke felt heavier than the chandelier above us.

Victoria slowly turned toward him.

“What exactly are you saying?””

Thomas Harrington Dynamics’ CFO had spent the entire evening laughing along with everyone else.

Now, he looked like a man who had just realized he was standing on the edge of a cliff.

“I’m saying,” he replied carefully, “that Ms. Bennett is not who you think she is.””

Ethan looked between us.

“Thomas, what are you talking about?””

The CFO ignored him.

His eyes stayed on me.

“You’re Olivia Bennett.””

I didn’t answer.

I didn’t need to.

Because everyone at that table suddenly remembered something.

The name.

The headlines.

The acquisitions.

The technology group that had quietly expanded while bigger companies fought for attention.

Victoria’s expression tightened.

“She owns a consulting company.””

I tilted my head.

“Is that what Ethan told you?””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“Olivia.””

“No, I’m curious.””

I looked at him.

“Why did you tell your family I was just a consultant?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

Victoria leaned forward.

“You’re making a scene because you’re offended.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

I picked up my phone.

“I’m making a business decision.””

Thomas immediately stood.

“Ms. Bennett, please.””

Victoria snapped her head toward him.

“Sit down.””

He didn’t.

That was when everyone understood something had changed.

The man who had been silent all night was now afraid of the woman Victoria had just humiliated.

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Mrs. Harrington, you don’t understand.””

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“Then explain it.””

Thomas looked at me.

“She controls the licensing infrastructure behind several of our biggest technology platforms.””

No one moved.

“She owns the cloud systems we integrated into our distribution network.””

The color slowly disappeared from Victoria’s face.

“And the majority of our enterprise expansion contracts are connected to Bennett Technologies.””

Ethan stared at me.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

His voice became quieter.

“You never told me.””

I almost laughed.

“You never asked.””

The words landed harder than I expected.

Because they were true.

Ethan had never asked about my work.

He loved introducing me as his fiancée.

But he never cared enough to understand the woman he was marrying.

Victoria pushed her chair back.

“This is ridiculous.””

She pointed at me.

“You’re threatening my family because my mother-in-law joke hurt your feelings?””

I looked at her.

“You threw wine in my face.””

She shrugged.

“And?””

That one word told me everything.

There was no regret.

No apology.

Only disbelief that someone had the ability to push back.

I turned toward the door.

“Rachel will send the notices by morning.””

Ethan moved quickly.

“Wait.””

I stopped.

For the first time all night, his voice sounded afraid.

“Olivia, we need to talk.””

I looked at him.

“About what?””

“About us.””

I stared at the ring sitting on the table.

“There is no us.””

His face changed.

“You can’t end everything because of one dinner.””

I stepped closer.

“One dinner?””

I lowered my voice.

“Ethan, your mother didn’t embarrass me.””

I looked around the room.

“Your family did.””

He shook his head.

“You’re overreacting.””

I smiled sadly.

“That’s what you said when your mother poured wine on me.””

He went quiet.

Victoria stood.

“You think you can walk away and destroy decades of work?””

I turned to her.

“No.””

I picked up my purse.

“I think your family made a mistake.””

She laughed bitterly.

“And you think you’re some kind of hero?””

“No.””

I looked at the terrified CFO.

“I think I’m someone you should have respected before you needed something from me.””

I walked toward the exit.

Behind me, I heard Ethan call my name.

“Olivia!””

I stopped at the door.

Not because I wanted to turn back.

Because I wanted him to hear me clearly.

“You should know something.””

The room waited.

“My company has been reviewing Harrington Dynamics’ accounts for months.””

Thomas froze.

Victoria’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

I turned around.

“It means I already knew your company had problems.””

Ethan stared.

“What problems?””

I smiled faintly.

“The kind your executives have been hiding from you.””

No one spoke.

I opened the door.

Then Thomas said something that stopped me.

Something I hadn’t expected.

“Ms. Bennett…”

I looked back.

His face was pale.

“There’s something you need to know before you leave.””

I waited.

He glanced at Ethan.

Then at Victoria.

And finally back at me.

“Your fiancé wasn’t just hiding your identity from his family.””

My fingers tightened around my purse.

“What else was he hiding?””

May you like

Thomas swallowed.

“He wasn’t planning to marry you for love.””
