Chapter 9: The Woman Who Paid for My Family to Fall Apart

Evelyn Price didn't look like someone who had paid to destroy a family.

She wore a cream-colored blazer, black heels, and a diamond bracelet that caught the light whenever she moved her hands.

She looked like someone attending a business dinner.

Not someone standing outside a motel while police officers investigated a custody dispute.

Susan and I met her the following morning at a law office.

Evelyn arrived with a lawyer.

She placed a thick black folder on the conference table.

"I want to make one thing clear," she began.

"I never intended for a child to be involved.""

I stared at her.

"Then why did you pay my brother?""

"Because Thomas approached me with a business proposal.""

"What proposal?""

"Your company.""

I leaned forward.

"My company wasn't for sale.""

"Thomas said you were preparing to sell it.""

"He lied.""

Evelyn opened the folder.

"At the time, I believed he had authority to negotiate on your behalf.""

Susan interrupted.

"Did you verify that authority?""

Evelyn looked uncomfortable.

"Not sufficiently.""

"Did you pay him?""

"Yes.""

"How much?""

"Initially, forty thousand dollars. Later, another sixty thousand was promised upon completion of the transaction.""

I stared at her.

"Completion of what transaction?""

"Your company's controlling interest being transferred to Thomas.""

Susan turned a page.

"Where does Vanessa fit into this?""

Evelyn took a breath.

"Thomas said your divorce was creating an opportunity. He claimed you were emotionally unstable and that the custody dispute would force you to liquidate the business.""

I laughed without humor.

"So he used my daughter as leverage to steal my company.""

Evelyn didn't deny it.

She removed another document.

"This is the original contract.""

The first page described a proposed acquisition of my construction company.

The second page listed the payment schedule.

The third contained a clause stating that Thomas would receive additional compensation if I voluntarily surrendered my ownership interest before the end of the year.

Then I noticed a paragraph highlighted in yellow.

Seller's cooperation is expected following the resolution of ongoing domestic proceedings.

I looked up.

"What does that mean?""

Evelyn's attorney answered.

"It appears the parties expected the custody litigation to influence your willingness to sell.""

"Expected?""

I pointed to the document.

"They planned it.""

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"I didn't know about the instructions given to Vanessa or the note shown in court.""

"Did you know about the forged financial complaint?""

"No.""

"Did you know they were planning to move Ava?""

"No.""

Susan closed the folder.

"Mrs. Price, we need the original electronic correspondence, all payment records, and a complete statement of your involvement.""

Evelyn nodded.

"I'll cooperate.""

I looked at her.

"Why now?""

For the first time, she seemed genuinely uncomfortable.

"Because Thomas contacted me last night.""

"What did he say?""

"He said the custody case had become unpredictable. He wanted me to release the remaining sixty thousand dollars immediately.""

"And?""

"I refused.""

Susan asked, "Did he threaten you?""

Evelyn hesitated.

"He said that if I didn't pay, he'd tell the authorities I had organized the entire scheme.""

I leaned back.

"Now you understand how it feels.""

She looked at me.

"I deserve that.""

We spent the next two hours reviewing the documents.

Evelyn's records connected the consulting company to Thomas, Vanessa, and the payments made to Richard.

There was also evidence that the original $85,000 transfer had been divided between two accounts.

One belonged to Thomas.

The other belonged to Vanessa.

Patricia later confirmed that the account activity was consistent with the documents Evelyn provided, although the transactions still required independent verification.

For the first time, the pieces were beginning to fit together.

Then Susan received a call from the court.

She listened carefully.

"Yes, Your Honor. We have the documents.""

She took notes.

"Understood.""

When she ended the call, she turned toward me.

"The judge has scheduled an emergency custody hearing for tomorrow morning.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"Will Ava be there?""

"Yes. But the court wants her participation handled through the child specialist, not through direct questioning by either parent.""

"Will Vanessa be there?""

"She'll be required to attend.""

I nodded.

I wanted to see my daughter.

I wanted to know she was safe.

But I also wanted Vanessa to look me in the eye and explain how she could use our child as a weapon.

Susan continued.

"There's one more issue. The judge has requested that Richard Coleman provide an explanation for his involvement.""

I looked down.

"Will he?""

"He has agreed to submit a statement.""

I wasn't convinced.

At 4:30 p.m., Patricia called with an update.

She had examined the original financial authorization and discovered that the $85,000 transfer had been initiated using Vanessa's laptop.

But the final approval came from another device.

A device registered to Richard Coleman's office.

That wasn't the only discovery.

The custody note found by Ava had been printed from a computer belonging to Northbridge Legal Consulting.

The same consulting company connected to the forty-thousand-dollar payment.

Patricia sent me the digital metadata.

The document had been created five months earlier.

Its author field contained a name.

Thomas Williams.

I stared at the screen.

My brother hadn't merely signed the financial agreement.

He had created the instructions that taught my daughter to fear me.

That evening, I finally received permission for a brief supervised call with Ava.

Her face appeared on the screen.

"Daddy!""

I smiled.

"Hello, my beautiful girl.""

"Are you coming to get me?""

"Soon, sweetheart. We're working on it.""

She held up a drawing.

It showed a house with a blue door.

There were three people standing outside.

A little girl.

A man.

And a woman.

I recognized myself immediately.

"Who's the woman, princess?""

"Ms. Parker.""

I laughed softly.

"That's a very nice drawing.""

Ava looked serious.

"Can I tell you something?""

"Anything.""

"Mommy cried last night.""

I swallowed.

"Did she?""

"She said Uncle Thomas was angry because I showed the judge the paper.""

I didn't know what to say.

Then Ava leaned closer to the screen.

"Daddy, I think Mommy has another paper.""

"What paper?""

"The one she said would make everybody believe you signed something.""

My smile disappeared.

"What did it look like?""

"A big white paper. It had your name at the bottom.""

I felt cold.

"Where did you see it?""

"In Mommy's suitcase.""

Before I could ask anything else, Ava whispered:

"She said she was going to bring it to court tomorrow.""

The call ended.

I immediately told Susan.

She requested that the court be informed of Ava's statement and that any newly submitted document be independently examined before being relied upon.

But I couldn't sleep that night.

At 2:13 a.m., an email arrived from an unknown sender.

There was one attachment.

A scanned document titled:

*VOLUNTARY TERMINATION OF PARENTAL RIGHTS.*

My name was already signed at the bottom.

The signature looked exactly like mine.

Except I had never signed it.

And beneath the signature was a date.

Tomorrow's date.

I stared at the screen as another email arrived.

Your brother has one final surprise for you, Marcus.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

Ask Vanessa who really signed the original custody note.

Because suddenly I understood something.

Thomas might have created the scheme.

Vanessa might have carried it out.

Richard might have helped hide it.

But someone else had been involved from the very beginning.

May you like

And that person had access to something none of them should have possessed.

My original signature.
