Chapter 7: The Day My Daughter Disappeared
I called Ms. Parker immediately.
She answered on the second ring.
"Marcus, I need you to remain calm.""
"Where is my daughter?""
"She's currently with her mother. Vanessa collected her from the supervised visitation center approximately twenty minutes ago.""
"Was she authorized to do that?""
"She had permission under the existing temporary arrangement. However, she has submitted an emergency request to relocate Ava.""
My stomach tightened.
"Relocate her where?""
"She hasn't disclosed the destination.""
I looked at Richard.
He was already reaching for his phone.
"Ms. Parker, did Vanessa mention Thomas Williams?""
There was a pause.
"Why are you asking?""
"Because he just called me. He knows where Ava is.""
Her voice changed.
"Marcus, I need you to tell me exactly what happened.""
I explained the phone call and the recording.
When I finished, she was silent for several seconds.
"Do you have evidence that your brother is attempting to interfere with the custody arrangement?""
"Yes. We have financial records and a recording.""
"Then send those documents to your attorney immediately. I'll notify the court of the new developments.""
I glanced at Richard.
He looked uncomfortable.
"I need an independent attorney," I told her.
"That may be wise.""
I ended the call.
Richard stared at me.
"Marcus, you can't simply abandon your legal representation in the middle of an emergency.""
"You should have thought about that before helping my brother.""
He lowered his eyes.
For once, he had no response.
I called another attorney recommended by Patricia. Her name was Susan Bennett, and she specialized in complex family litigation.
She agreed to meet us immediately.
Before leaving, Daniel handed me a small flash drive.
"There's something on here you haven't seen.""
"What?""
"The original email archive from Vanessa's old work laptop.""
"Why didn't you show me earlier?""
"Because I was afraid.""
I stared at him.
"Afraid of what?""
He looked toward the windows.
"Thomas didn't just threaten my career. He told me he knew where my children went to school.""
I put the flash drive in my pocket.
"Why are you helping me now?""
Daniel's eyes filled.
"Because I saw Ava in that courtroom. She looked exactly like my daughter did when I was going through my divorce. I couldn't let another child pay for what adults did.""
We drove to Susan's office.
She was in her early forties, with short brown hair and a direct manner that immediately made me feel more comfortable.
She listened without interrupting.
Then she examined the recording, the bank statements, and the custody documents.
When she finished, she looked at me.
"Marcus, there are several separate issues here. Potential financial misconduct, possible fabrication of evidence, and an apparent attempt to influence custody proceedings.""
"What can we do?""
"First, we preserve everything. Second, we notify the family court of the newly discovered evidence. Third, we request an emergency hearing concerning Ava's immediate welfare.""
"Can we stop Vanessa from moving her?""
"Not by making threats or confronting her. We need the court to act.""
Susan drafted the emergency filing while Patricia prepared a preliminary financial report.
At 6:42 p.m., my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
"Where is Ava?""
Her voice was sharp.
"She's safe.""
"Then let me speak to her.""
"Not tonight.""
"Why are you moving her?""
"I'm protecting her.""
"From what?""
"From you, Marcus.""
I closed my eyes.
"Vanessa, I know about the forty thousand dollars.""
Silence.
"I know about Thomas. I know about the eighty-five thousand dollars. And I know you coached Ava to lie.""
She laughed nervously.
"You're listening to Daniel? That man is a criminal.""
"Did you write those instructions?""
"You're harassing me.""
"Did you?""
Her voice dropped.
"You have no idea what you've done.""
"Then explain it.""
She breathed heavily.
"Thomas said you would never discover the payments. He said the company records were already handled.""
I froze.
"Why did you need my company?""
"Because you had everything, Marcus. The house, the business, the money. I had to ask you for permission to buy groceries.""
"That isn't true.""
"You always made me feel like I was nothing.""
"So you decided to take my daughter?""
She didn't answer.
Then I heard a familiar voice in the background.
Thomas.
"Hang up, Vanessa.""
My blood turned cold.
"Is Thomas with you?""
"Goodbye, Marcus.""
The call ended.
Susan looked up from her computer.
"Did you hear him?""
I nodded.
She immediately contacted the court and requested that the call be documented.
Then my phone rang again.
This time it was a video call from an unknown number.
I answered.
Ava appeared on the screen.
She was sitting in the back of a car, wearing the same yellow dress from court.
"Daddy?""
My heart nearly stopped.
"Princess! Are you okay?""
She nodded.
But her eyes kept moving toward someone outside the frame.
"Where's Mommy?""
"She's talking to Uncle Thomas.""
I felt Susan move closer.
"Ava, sweetheart, listen to me. Are you somewhere safe?""
She nodded again.
Then she whispered.
"Daddy, Uncle Thomas took your blue folder.""
"What blue folder?""
"The one Mommy keeps in her bag.""
A shadow moved across the screen.
A man's voice spoke.
"Ava, give me the phone.""
My daughter looked terrified.
"Daddy, I found another paper. It has your name and my name.""
"What does it say, sweetheart?""
She brought a folded sheet close to the camera.
I could barely read the writing.
But one sentence was clear.
Final transfer of parental rights upon payment completion.
Before I could ask anything else, the screen went black.
Susan immediately grabbed her phone.
"Marcus, do not call Thomas. Do not go looking for them yourself.""
I stared at the blank screen.
My daughter had just shown me a document suggesting someone intended to permanently remove my parental rights.
And the person holding that document was my own brother.
Then a final text arrived from Ava's tablet.
It contained only six words.
May you like
Daddy, I know where they are.
And beneath it was an address.
