Chapter 11: The Woman Behind the Forgery
Susan immediately stood.
"Your Honor, we request that Mrs. Williams be allowed to explain what she means.""
Judge Whitmore nodded.
"Mrs. Williams, you may speak, but remember that you are under oath.""
Vanessa wiped her face.
Her hands were shaking.
She looked at Thomas.
He stared straight ahead.
Then she looked at me.
"Marcus, I didn't want this to happen.""
I almost laughed.
"You had six months to stop it.""
She lowered her eyes.
"I know.""
"Then tell the truth.""
She took a breath.
"The termination document wasn't prepared by Thomas.""
Susan asked, "Who prepared it?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she said a name.
"Evelyn Price.""
I turned toward Susan.
She immediately wrote something on her notepad.
Judge Whitmore leaned forward.
"Mrs. Williams, explain.""
Vanessa began.
"Thomas introduced me to Evelyn after the divorce started. She said she could help me secure custody and protect myself financially.""
"How?""
"She said the court needed evidence that Marcus was unstable. She suggested documenting every argument and keeping photographs of anything broken in the house.""
I stared at her.
"The mug?""
Vanessa nodded.
"I knew you hadn't thrown it at me.""
The admission hit me harder than I expected.
"You knew?""
She started crying.
"Yes.""
I looked down at the table.
For months, I had replayed that argument in my head, wondering whether I had somehow frightened her without realizing it.
Now she was admitting she had knowingly turned an accident into an accusation.
Judge Whitmore asked, "Who instructed you to involve Ava?""
Vanessa looked at Thomas.
"He did.""
Thomas immediately stood.
"That's ridiculous!""
The judge struck her gavel.
"Sit down!""
Vanessa continued.
"Thomas said the child specialist would take Ava's statements more seriously if she appeared afraid. He told me to repeat certain phrases at home.""
"What phrases?""
"That Marcus got angry. That Daddy broke things. That Daddy might hurt people.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"Did you say those things to our daughter?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
"Every day?""
She began sobbing.
"Not every day.""
I looked at her.
"Vanessa, she told the judge you threatened to stop her seeing me if she didn't lie.""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"I was desperate.""
"For what?""
She looked at me.
"For money.""
The courtroom went silent.
She explained that Thomas had promised her a portion of the business once I surrendered control. Evelyn had offered to arrange a financial settlement, and Richard had been brought in to review the documents.
But the person who actually prepared the forged termination document was Evelyn's assistant, a woman named Laura Bennett.
Laura had previously worked in my company's administrative office.
She knew my signature.
She knew the format of my business documents.
And she had access to scanned copies of my signed contracts.
I felt a chill.
"How did she get them?""
Vanessa looked down.
"From the old office computer.""
My old office computer.
The one I had left in storage after moving out of the family home.
"Who gave her access?""
"Thomas.""
Susan stood.
"Your Honor, this suggests unauthorized access to private business records and possible document fabrication involving several individuals.""
Judge Whitmore nodded.
"I agree that these allegations require further investigation.""
Thomas suddenly laughed.
It was a short, bitter sound.
"Everyone is blaming me.""
He stood.
"Vanessa wanted custody. Evelyn wanted the company. Richard wanted money.
Daniel stole from the business. But somehow I'm the only villain?""
I turned toward him.
"You arranged it.""
Thomas pointed at me.
"You think you're innocent? You always thought you were better than me!""
"This has nothing to do with our childhood.""
"Everything has to do with our childhood!""
His voice echoed through the courtroom.
"You got Dad's trust. You got the business. You got the house.
You got the wife. Even when I asked for help, you treated me like some failure!""
"I offered you a job.""
"I didn't want a job!""
"What did you want, Thomas?""
He stared at me.
Then he said the words I would never forget.
"I wanted what was yours.""
For a moment, nobody moved.
Judge Whitmore ordered him to sit.
Thomas obeyed.
But Vanessa wasn't finished.
"There was another agreement," she said quietly.
Susan turned.
"What agreement?""
Vanessa reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.
"I kept a copy.""
Inside was a handwritten agreement dated three months before the custody filing.
It stated that Vanessa would receive $150,000 once I surrendered control of my company and agreed to terminate my parental rights.
But the final paragraph was different.
It stated that Ava would be relocated to a private residential property until the financial transaction was completed.
I read the address.
It was a property in North Carolina.
"Who owned it?"" Susan asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know. Thomas arranged everything.""
Susan examined the document.
"Why did you keep this?""
Vanessa looked toward me.
"Because I started to realize Thomas wasn't planning to give me the money.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"He told me I would receive my payment after you signed the documents. But I found another message on his phone.""
"What message?""
She swallowed.
"It said that once Ava was moved, I would no longer be necessary.""
I felt sick.
Thomas jumped up.
"She's lying!""
Vanessa began crying again.
"He told Evelyn he could get rid of both of us.""
The courtroom erupted in whispers.
Judge Whitmore ordered everyone to remain seated.
Susan leaned toward me.
"Marcus, this changes the situation considerably.""
I nodded.
Because suddenly the reason behind Thomas's behavior was becoming clear.
He hadn't been helping Vanessa.
He had been using her.
He wanted my company.
He wanted the money.
And he had planned to use my daughter as leverage before abandoning the woman who had helped him.
Then Vanessa reached into her handbag one final time.
She removed a photograph.
It showed Thomas standing beside Laura Bennett outside a storage facility.
Between them was a large cardboard box.
Vanessa pointed to it.
"That's where they kept the original documents.""
Susan examined the photograph.
"Do you know what's inside?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Everything.""
"Everything?""
"Every draft. Every recording. Every version of the custody note.""
I leaned forward.
"Where is the storage facility?""
Vanessa looked at me.
Then she said something that made Susan immediately pick up her phone.
"It's already been emptied.""
May you like
And when Susan asked who had removed the boxes, Vanessa gave us the name of the person who had arrived there the night before.
Daniel Brooks.
