Chapter 9: The Enemy Inside The House

Nobody spoke.

The name stayed on the screen.

Robert.

My first instinct was anger.

My second was confusion.

Because the man standing in front of me had just revealed secrets that destroyed my entire understanding of my family.

And now his name was connected to the same people who hurt us.

I looked at him.

“Explain.””

Robert stared at Mason’s phone.

Then he closed his eyes.

“I knew this would happen eventually.””

Emily stepped back.

“Dad?””

He looked at her.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“Not anymore.””

Robert looked devastated.

“I made mistakes.””

I laughed.

“Everyone says that right before admitting they ruined lives.””

He didn’t argue.

That scared me more.

I took Mason’s phone.

“Show me.””

Mason opened the messages.

The conversation was between Vanessa and Robert.

Vanessa: “Daniel is starting to question things.””

Robert: “Keep him calm.””

Vanessa: “What about Emily?””

Robert: “She won’t come back.””

My hands tightened.

Then another message.

Vanessa: “And Noah?””

A long pause.

Then Robert replied:

“Eventually, he won’t matter.””

I felt something snap.

I walked toward Robert.

“You knew.””

He didn’t move.

“You knew about my son.””

“Yes.””

The answer was quiet.

Too quiet.

Noah looked up at me.

“Daddy?””

I turned immediately.

“Noah, go with Emily.””

He hesitated.

Then Emily took his hand.

I watched my son walk away from the man who had betrayed us.

Robert looked at me.

“I never wanted Noah hurt.””

“But you allowed it.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was painful.

“Why?””

He looked toward the window.

“Because I thought removing attachments would make you stronger.””

I stared at him.

“You’re all insane.””

Nobody responded.

Because maybe they knew.

Maybe they had spent so long controlling lives that they forgot what normal looked like.

A loud crash came from the front of the house.

The window shattered.

Everyone screamed.

I grabbed the nearest object and moved toward Noah.

Then the lights came back on.

And someone walked through the broken front door.

Not a stranger.

Not a criminal.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had been pretending to help me.

My attorney.

Michael.

He looked around the room.

Then smiled.

“Daniel.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“You.””

He adjusted his jacket.

“I was hoping we could avoid this.””

Emily whispered:

“You know him?””

I nodded slowly.

“He handled my divorce paperwork.””

Michael smiled.

“Among other things.””

I stared.

“What are you doing here?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at my mother.

Then at Robert.

“Cleaning up.””

I stepped forward.

“Cleaning up what?””

He looked at Noah.

And smiled.

“Loose ends.””

My entire body went cold.

“No.””

Michael sighed.

“Daniel, you’ve spent years believing you were protecting your family.””

He took a step inside.

“But you never asked the most important question.””

“What question?””

He looked directly at Emily.

“Why did she survive when everyone else involved disappeared?””

Emily’s face changed.

Because she knew something.

Something she hadn’t told me.

I turned toward her.

“What is he talking about?””

She looked terrified.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I wasn’t the only one who escaped.””

A silence fell.

Then Michael smiled.

“And that’s the truth nobody was supposed to find.””

He pulled out a folder.

And placed it on the table.

On the cover was a name.

My name.

May you like

And beneath it:

“THE ORIGINAL PLAN FOR NOAH.””
