Chapter 5: The Woman I Lost
I don’t remember walking to the front door.
I only remember Noah screaming:
“Mom?””
That single word broke the silence.
I opened the door.
And there she was.
Emily.
Older.
Thinner.
Her hair was shorter.
There were shadows under her eyes that weren’t there before.
But it was her.
The woman who used to sing badly while making breakfast.
The woman who danced with Noah in the kitchen.
The woman who kissed my forehead before leaving for work.
The woman I had spent two years mourning.
She looked at me like she was afraid I would disappear.
“Daniel.””
I couldn’t speak.
I just stared.
Then Noah ran.
He crashed into her arms.
For one second, nobody moved.
Emily dropped to her knees and held him.
“My baby.””
Noah cried into her shoulder.
“You’re alive.””
Emily squeezed her eyes shut.
“I’m sorry.””
“You left me.””
The words were quiet.
But they hurt more than anger.
Emily started crying.
“I know.””
“You promised.””
“I know.””
“Why didn’t you come back?””
She looked at me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Because they made sure I couldn’t.””
Behind me, Vanessa whispered:
“Don’t listen to her.””
Emily looked up.
Her expression changed.
“You.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“You’re lying.””
Emily slowly stood.
“You told him I died.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Because you wanted to leave.””
Noah looked between them.
Confused.
I stepped forward.
“Everyone inside.””
Nobody argued.
Not anymore.
We sat in the living room.
The same room where I had built a life with Vanessa.
The same room where I had watched Noah open birthday presents.
Now it felt like a courtroom.
I looked at Emily.
“Start from the beginning.””
She nodded.
“I found out something about your mother.””
My mother immediately stood.
“Enough.””
I looked at her.
“Sit down.””
She stared at me.
I had never spoken to my mother like that before.
But I didn’t recognize the person sitting in front of me anymore.
Emily continued.
“Your mother didn’t like that I was changing things.””
“What things?””
“She believed Noah was the reason you stayed stuck in the past.””
My jaw tightened.
“She thought my son was a burden.””
Emily nodded.
“She told me that after Noah was older, you would finally be free.””
Noah lowered his head.
I moved closer to him.
“She’s wrong.””
Emily looked at him.
“I know.””
My mother suddenly laughed.
A small, bitter laugh.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Everyone looked at her.
She continued:
“Daniel gave everything to that boy.””
My anger rose.
“He was four years old.””
“He was holding you back.””
I stood.
“Stop.””
But she didn’t.
“You stopped living after his mother died.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“I became a father.””
The room went silent.
Emily covered her mouth.
My mother looked away.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“You’re acting like you’re innocent, Emily.””
Emily turned.
“What?””
“You left.””
Emily’s face fell.
“I was forced to.””
“Convenient.””
Mason suddenly stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
He shook his head.
“You always say that.””
Vanessa froze.
Mason continued:
“But I know you’re lying.””
“Why?””
“Because I found the messages.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“What messages?””
“The ones between you and Grandma.””
My mother’s face went pale.
Mason picked up his phone.
“You thought you deleted them.””
He opened a folder.
“I recovered them.””
I looked at the screen.
The first message was from Vanessa.
“Is she gone?””
My hands started shaking.
The reply from my mother came next.
“For now.””
Then another message.
Vanessa again.
“And Daniel?””
My mother replied:
“He will be easier to control once he thinks he lost everything.””
I couldn’t breathe.
Emily looked at me.
“I tried to warn you.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You married me knowing this?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
But I didn’t know if they were real.
“I loved you.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“You loved what you could take from me.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Mason’s phone buzzed.
A new message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
“Ask Emily why she really came back tonight.””
I looked at Emily.
Her face changed.
Like she had been waiting for this moment.
“Daniel…”
I swallowed.
“What?””
She looked at Noah.
Then at me.
“I didn’t come back because I escaped.””
My heart sank.
“Then why?””
May you like
Emily whispered:
“Because the person who helped me disappear just threatened to take Noah forever.””
