Chapter 6: The Person Behind The Door

Nobody moved after Emily said those words.

The room felt smaller.

Like the walls were closing in around us.

I looked at her.

“Who?””

Emily looked toward my mother.

Then toward Vanessa.

Neither reacted.

That scared me more.

Because if someone was innocent, they would be shocked.

They would demand answers.

But they just sat there.

Waiting.

“Emily.””

My voice cracked.

“Who helped you disappear?””

She looked down.

“I don’t know everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

She took a deep breath.

“The night I disappeared, I was supposed to meet someone.””

“Who?””

“A person who said they had proof your mother was planning something.””

I frowned.

“Planning what?””

“To separate us.””

The room went silent.

Emily continued.

“I thought I was meeting someone who wanted to help.””

She looked at Noah.

“But I was wrong.””

Noah moved closer to me.

“What happened?””

Emily closed her eyes.

“When I arrived, my car was taken.””

My hands tightened.

“You were kidnapped?””

She nodded slowly.

“I was kept somewhere for weeks.””

Noah looked terrified.

I immediately pulled him closer.

“Don’t listen to details, buddy.””

But Emily continued.

“I escaped eventually.””

“Why didn’t you call me?””

She looked at me.

“Because every time I tried, someone already knew.””

My blood ran cold.

“What do you mean?””

“The first time I found a phone, I called your number.””

She swallowed.

“Your mother answered.””

Everyone looked at my mother.

She didn’t deny it.

That was the answer.

I felt sick.

“You were watching me.””

My mother looked tired.

“Daniel—”

“No.””

I stepped away.

“Don’t say my name like you’re still my mother.””

The words hurt me as much as they hurt her.

But I couldn’t take them back.

Mason suddenly stood.

“Dad.””

I looked at him.

“There’s something else.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“I found the first video because I was searching through Mom’s computer.””

Vanessa glared.

“Mason.””

He ignored her.

“There was a hidden folder.””

“What was inside?””

He looked at Emily.

“Pictures.””

Emily went pale.

“Of what?””

Mason opened the folder.

The first image appeared.

It was Emily.

Taken while she was missing.

The second image was Noah.

Sleeping in his room.

My entire body went cold.

“No.””

I grabbed the phone.

The picture had been taken through his bedroom window.

A date appeared underneath.

Three months ago.

Someone had been watching my son.

Vanessa whispered:

“I didn’t know about that.””

I turned toward her.

“Why should I believe you?””

She had no answer.

Then the lights went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

Noah grabbed my arm.

“Daddy.””

“Stay behind me.””

I reached for my phone flashlight.

Then I heard it.

A sound from upstairs.

A door opening.

Slowly.

Everyone froze.

Someone was inside the house.

I whispered:

“Did anyone lock the front door?””

Nobody answered.

Then came footsteps.

One step.

Another.

Coming down the stairs.

Mason grabbed my sleeve.

“Dad…”

The footsteps stopped.

A voice came from the darkness.

A voice I recognized.

A voice that made Emily cover her mouth.

Because she knew it too.

“Daniel.””

The flashlight shook in my hand.

The person stepped into view.

And standing at the bottom of my stairs was the one person I never expected to see.

Noah’s grandfather.

Emily’s father.

The man everyone thought had died five years earlier.

He looked directly at Emily.

May you like

And said:

“You were never supposed to come back.””
