Chapter 11: The Child Nobody Knew About
I read the message again.
Then again.
“The truth about your own birth.””
My fingers went numb.
I looked at my mother.
She looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Terrified.
That was when I knew.
The message was real.
“Mom.””
She didn’t answer.
“Tell me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I have spent my entire life believing I knew who I was.””
I held up the phone.
“Now I find out everyone has been lying.””
Emily moved closer.
“Daniel, whatever it is, we’ll handle it.””
I looked at her.
“You knew too?””
She looked away.
That hurt.
“You knew?””
“I found out recently.””
“When?””
She swallowed.
“Before I came back.””
I felt like the ground disappeared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
Everyone said that.
Protect.
Protect.
Protect.
But all they ever did was hide the truth.
Michael picked up the USB drive.
“You want answers?””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Then watch.””
We connected it to my laptop.
A video appeared.
The date was seventeen years earlier.
Before Noah.
Before Emily.
Before Vanessa.
Before everything.
The person on screen was my father.
I froze.
I hadn’t seen him move in years.
His face appeared.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably him.
“If Daniel is watching this, then everything went wrong.””
I couldn’t breathe.
My father continued.
“My son deserves the truth.””
He paused.
“The family you were born into was not the family I wanted for you.””
I looked at my mother.
She covered her mouth.
My father continued.
“Linda, Michael, and the others believe Daniel is only valuable because of what he will inherit.””
My hands tightened.
“But they are wrong.””
The video changed.
A baby photo appeared.
Mine.
Then another document.
My father’s voice continued.
“Daniel was not born into this family.””
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
I stared at the screen.
“What?””
Emily looked at me.
My father’s voice continued.
“I adopted Daniel when he was six months old.””
The room disappeared.
I couldn’t hear anything.
Adopted.
The word echoed.
My mother started crying.
I looked at her.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“I did.””
“How could you never tell me?””
She wiped her face.
“Because I was your mother.””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“Because you were afraid I would leave.””
She couldn’t answer.
My father continued.
“Daniel’s biological family was dangerous.””
I froze.
“What?””
The video showed another document.
A name.
A surname I had never heard before.
My father’s voice became quieter.
“The people searching for him were the reason I hid the truth.””
I looked at Michael.
“You knew.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“Everyone knew except me.””
Nobody corrected me.
That hurt the most.
My father’s final words in the video were:
“If anyone tries to use Daniel’s identity against him, it means they have discovered what I spent my life hiding.””
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Then someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone froze.
Robert whispered:
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Who is it?””
His face had gone pale.
“The one person who knows the entire story.””
The knocking came again.
Harder.
Michael stepped backward.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
The front door opened.
Nobody touched it.
A woman walked inside.
She looked at me.
Then at Noah.
And whispered:
“I’m sorry I couldn’t find you sooner.””
I stared.
“Who are you?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
May you like
Then she said:
“I’m your biological mother.””
