Chapter 8: The Bride Who Knew Too Much

The woman with the federal badge introduced herself as Special Agent Morgan Ellis.

She didn't raise her voice or rush toward anyone. She simply placed a leather folder on the head table and began issuing instructions that made the wedding feel less like a celebration and more like a crime scene.

“Everyone remains where they are,” she said.

“We'll take statements individually. Nobody leaves with documents or electronic devices connected to this investigation.””

A guest near the back protested.

“Are we being detained?””

“No, sir. But anyone who interferes with this investigation may create a separate legal problem for themselves.””

The man immediately sat down.

I held Lily close while Daniel stood a few feet away, answering questions from another agent.

I wanted to go to him. I wanted to demand every missing detail, to shake him until three years of silence came spilling out.

Instead, I watched my sister.

Vanessa sat alone at the head table, her expensive gown spread across two chairs. Her makeup had begun to run, leaving dark streaks beneath her eyes.

Graham stood beside the windows, staring at the ocean.

His wedding ring remained on the table.

Agent Ellis approached him.

“Mr. Whitmore, did you know your father was alive?””

“No.””

“Did your wife ever discuss financial arrangements involving him?””

Graham hesitated.

Vanessa looked up sharply.

“Graham, don't.””

He turned toward her.

“Don't what? Tell the truth?””

She pressed a trembling hand to her mouth.

Graham faced the agent again.

“About two months ago, I found a set of financial documents in Vanessa's office. There were payments to a company I didn't recognize. When I asked her about them, she said they were connected to an inheritance.””

“Do you still have those documents?””

“Yes. At home.””

“Can you provide them to us?””

“Of course.””

Vanessa stood abruptly.

“You promised me you wouldn't tell anyone about those accounts!””

Graham stared at her.

“I promised to protect my wife. I never promised to protect a criminal.””

Her face crumpled.

“You don't understand. My mother said Richard would destroy us if we didn't cooperate.””

Agent Ellis stepped closer.

“Mrs. Whitmore, what exactly did Richard threaten to do?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I need a lawyer.””

“That is your right. But I strongly suggest you stop discussing the matter with anyone except your attorney.””

My mother sat motionless, staring at her hands.

For a moment, I felt a strange, terrible pity for her. She looked smaller than I remembered, stripped of the authority she had always used to control every room she entered.

Then I remembered Daniel's empty side of the bed, Lily's birthdays without her father, and the years I had spent believing I was unworthy of being loved.

The pity disappeared.

I walked toward Patricia.

“Did you know Richard was alive?””

She didn't look up.

“Yes.””

The answer was so quiet I almost missed it.

“How long?””

“Since the year after your father died.””

I gripped the back of a chair.

“You knew all these years?””

“He contacted me. He said he could help us financially if I kept his identity secret.””

“And you agreed.””

“I was frightened, Claire.””

“Stop saying that!””

My voice carried across the ballroom.

Several guests turned toward us.

I lowered it, but I didn't soften the words.

“You had choices. You could have told the police. You could have told me.

You could have protected Daniel when he wanted to come home. Instead, you lied to everyone and called it protection.””

Tears rolled down my mother's cheeks.

“I thought I could control the situation.””

“You couldn't even control your own lies.””

She looked toward Lily.

“Please don't let her hate me.””

I followed her gaze.

My daughter was sitting beside Daniel, who had given her his coat because the ballroom's air conditioning was making her shiver.

Lily was listening to him describe the little garden he had rented behind his temporary apartment. She asked whether there were flowers, and he promised to show her pictures.

They were talking as if three years could be folded away like a blanket.

But I knew better.

“That's between you and Lily,” I told my mother.

“You don't get to ask me to repair what you broke.””

Agent Ellis returned with a tablet.

“Mrs. Whitmore, we have recovered a message from an account associated with the company that funded several of these transfers. It was sent three weeks before the wedding.””

Vanessa's head snapped up.

“What message?””

The agent read aloud.

“The old problem must be resolved before the ceremony. Graham cannot discover the source of the inheritance, and Claire cannot be allowed to speak to Daniel.”

My stomach dropped.

“Who sent it?””

Agent Ellis looked at the screen.

“The account was registered to Vanessa Whitmore.””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“I didn't write that!””

“Did someone else have access to your account?””

“My mother knew my passwords. She handled my finances for years!””

Patricia looked up.

“Vanessa, don't you dare.””

“You told me the wedding would settle everything! You said Graham would inherit the company, and we'd finally be safe!””

Graham turned from the windows.

“What does my inheritance have to do with this?””

Vanessa pressed both hands to her temples.

“Your father left a trust. The money was supposed to transfer after our wedding.””

“Which money?””

“Everything.””

Graham stared at her.

She continued, speaking faster now.

“Your father created a private trust with assets worth millions. The transfer required us to be legally married. Mom said the money would pay off the remaining debts and protect us from the investigation.””

Agent Ellis made a note.

“Who told you the trust was legitimate?””

Vanessa looked at Patricia.

“My mother.””

Patricia rose slowly.

“I never told you to lie to your husband.””

“You told me to make sure the wedding happened before the end of the month!””

“I told you to protect the family!””

“You told me Richard would come back after the ceremony!””

The room went silent.

Graham took one step toward Vanessa.

“Richard was supposed to attend my wedding?””

Vanessa's face went white.

She had said too much.

Agent Ellis lowered her tablet.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I need you to answer that question.””

Vanessa sank into her chair.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“He was supposed to come.””

“When?””

“After the ceremony. He said he'd be waiting at the estate's private entrance.””

Graham stared at her.

“My father is alive, and you invited him to our wedding without telling me?””

“I was trying to make everything right.””

“How?””

Vanessa began to cry.

“Richard promised he'd explain everything once the trust transferred. He said he had proof that Daniel was responsible for your wife's father's death.””

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

Daniel stood up immediately.

“That's a lie.””

Agent Ellis turned toward him.

“Mr. Bennett, we need to discuss that statement.””

Before Daniel could answer, an officer hurried through the ballroom doors.

He spoke quietly to Agent Ellis, but I caught the last words.

“There's a vehicle outside. The driver claims to be Richard Whitmore.””

Graham went completely still.

Then the agent's radio crackled.

A second officer's voice came through.

“Agent Ellis, the driver has provided a statement. He says he didn't come here to surrender.””

May you like

A pause.

“He says he came to collect the bride.””
