Chapter 14: The Son Nobody Knew Existed
Graham stared at the photograph until his hands began to shake.
“That's me,” he whispered.
I looked between him and the teenage boy in the picture.
The resemblance was undeniable.
The same eyes. The same crooked smile. The same small scar above the left eyebrow.
But the date written on the back was from eighteen years earlier, when Graham had been a grown man.
“This photograph can't be eighteen years old,” Graham said.
“I was thirty-two. That's a teenager.””
Agent Ellis examined the image.
“The handwriting may be older than the photograph. We need to verify the date.””
Graham turned it over again.
Beneath the original inscription, someone had written another sentence in blue ink.
Richard's first son. The one he abandoned.
Graham looked sick.
“My father had another child?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not just another child. A son he concealed from everyone.””
“Who?””
Before Daniel could answer, a car pulled into the driveway.
Two officers moved toward the windows.
A woman stepped out, wearing a dark raincoat and carrying a leather satchel. She was in her late fifties, with short silver hair and a face marked by years of worry.
Agent Ellis approached the door.
“Ma'am, can I help you?””
The woman looked past her.
“I'm Evelyn Shaw. I believe you're looking for me.””
The room fell silent.
Agent Ellis escorted her inside.
Evelyn's eyes immediately found the photograph in Graham's hand.
“Oh,” she whispered.
“You've found it.””
Graham stepped toward her.
“Who is the boy?””
Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.
“His name is Michael Whitmore. He's your half brother.””
Graham shook his head.
“My father never mentioned him.””
“Richard never wanted anyone to know he existed. Michael's mother worked in one of his offices. When she became pregnant, Richard paid her to leave town.””
“Did she?””
“No. She died when Michael was eleven. Thomas helped me find him after Richard refused to acknowledge him.””
Graham lowered himself into a chair.
“Where is he now?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“That's why I'm here.””
Agent Ellis folded her arms.
“Start from the beginning. We need the full account.””
Evelyn placed her satchel on the table and removed a thick folder.
“Thomas discovered that Richard had been stealing money from their business. Patricia helped move some of the funds because she believed Richard was investing them for Vanessa's future. When Thomas threatened to expose the scheme, Richard arranged a meeting and intended to frighten him into silence.””
“What happened at the road?”” I asked.
Evelyn looked at me.
“Richard's driver struck Thomas's car. The collision was deliberate, but the driver didn't realize Thomas had survived.””
My hands went cold.
“My mother said she was driving.””
“She was. Patricia arrived moments after the collision. She thought Thomas was dead until he moved.””
“Then why did she leave him?””
“Because Richard's men were approaching. Thomas begged her to drive away so she wouldn't be arrested with him. He told her to go home and pretend she knew nothing.””
I shook my head.
“She let me believe he was dead for twelve years.””
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“She believed that if you knew he was alive, Richard would use you to find him. She was wrong to let you grieve, but she thought it was the only way to keep you safe.””
“Why did she help Daniel disappear?””
“Because Richard discovered Daniel had recovered the financial records. He threatened to destroy Claire's life if Daniel went to the police. Patricia believed she could keep Richard away from you by making Daniel leave voluntarily.””
I stared at Evelyn.
“So my mother forged my signature?””
Evelyn nodded.
“She thought Daniel would stay away if he believed you wanted him gone. She didn't understand how much damage that lie would cause.””
“Did she know Richard was watching Lily's school?””
“No. That was Richard's doing.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Then why did Thomas say I knew who caused the accident?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because you destroyed the original recording.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“I thought it would protect Claire.””
“You thought wrong,” Evelyn replied.
“That recording contained Richard's voice. He admitted arranging the collision. Without it, we have to rely on financial records and witness statements.””
Agent Ellis took the folder.
“Are these original documents?””
“Some are. The rest are certified copies. I've kept them safe for twelve years.””
“Why come forward now?””
Evelyn glanced toward the window.
“Because Thomas is missing again, and Richard knows where he was hiding.””
She removed a folded note from her satchel.
“Thomas gave me this yesterday. He told me to deliver it to Claire if anything happened to him.””
My heart began pounding.
I opened the note.
Claire,
I am sorry I let you believe I was dead. I wanted to come home more times than I can count, but Richard threatened to kill anyone who helped me.
There is something I never told you about your mother. She wasn't the only one who helped me survive.
Your sister Vanessa secretly warned me when Richard planned to destroy the records. She was young, frightened, and desperate to protect her future, but she saved my life once.
I looked toward Vanessa's empty place in my mind.
The sister who had humiliated me. The woman who had married Graham for money. The person who had helped conceal so many secrets.
She had also helped my father survive.
The note continued.
I don't expect you to forgive anyone. I only want you to understand that people can do terrible things for reasons that are complicated, and sometimes the truth is more painful than the lie.
At the bottom, my father had written an address.
A small marina outside Portland.
Agent Ellis immediately dispatched officers to investigate.
Before we could leave, Evelyn reached into her satchel again.
“There is one more thing.””
She handed Graham a sealed envelope bearing Richard's signature.
Inside was a document transferring ownership of the Whitmore estate and several investment properties to a private trust.
Graham scanned the final page.
His face turned pale.
“This isn't an inheritance agreement.””
“What is it?”” I asked.
“A transfer of assets to Michael Whitmore. It was signed six months ago.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Richard intended to leave everything to his first son. Graham was only supposed to serve as the public face of the company until the transfer was complete.””
Graham let out a bitter laugh.
“So my wedding was a business transaction.””
“Richard wanted you married before the trust took effect,” Evelyn said.
“He believed Vanessa would help him control you.””
Graham looked at the photograph again.
“Does Michael know?””
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“He's the person who has been helping Thomas hide.””
Agent Ellis's phone rang.
She listened, then turned toward the door.
“We've located the marina. There's a boat missing from its slip.””
My heart sank.
“Was my father there?””
“We found fresh footprints on the dock and a message written on a nearby window.””
Agent Ellis read it aloud.
Tell Claire I'm sorry. I have to finish this myself.
I closed my eyes.
After twelve years of hiding, my father was still running.
But this time, I wasn't going to let him disappear without hearing the truth from me.
“Take me to the marina,” I said.
Agent Ellis hesitated.
“Claire, it's not safe.””
“Then make it safe.””
She studied my face, then nodded.
As we headed outside, my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
If you want to see your father alive, come to the old Bennett warehouse before midnight.
A second message followed.
Come alone. Bring the silver flash drive.
I showed Agent Ellis.
She immediately ordered her team to trace the number.
But before she could speak, another message arrived.
This one included a photograph of my father tied to a chair in a dimly lit room.
His face was bruised, but he was alive.

Underneath the picture were six words.
*Richard Whitmore wants to finish this tonight.*
