Chapter 10: The Passenger Nobody Was Supposed to Remember

“Your sister knows who the second passenger was.””

Richard's words followed me long after the officers escorted him out of the ballroom.

Vanessa stood frozen beside the head table, her wedding gown glittering beneath the chandeliers. Graham stared at her with an expression I couldn't decipher. My mother had collapsed into a chair, repeating the same sentence over and over.

“I never meant for him to die.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Who was in the car?””

She shook her head.

“Claire, please.””

“Who was the second passenger?””

“I don't know what Richard meant.””

“You knew my father was meeting him. You knew my mother followed him. And now Richard says you know who else was there.””

Vanessa looked at Graham.

He stepped away from her.

“Don't look at me. Answer your sister.””

Her lips trembled.

“I was there.””

The words barely made a sound.

I stared at her.

“What?””

“I was in the car with Mom.””

For a moment, I couldn't understand what she was saying.

Twelve years earlier, I had been twenty-four, working at a small insurance office in Providence. Vanessa had just finished college. Dad had promised to take us all to dinner that weekend, and I'd spent the afternoon choosing a restaurant he would like.

Instead, my mother called at midnight to say there had been an accident.

She told me Dad had been driving alone.

She told me the police believed he had lost control on the wet road.

She held me while I cried.

And all those years, my sister had known she was lying.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Vanessa wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.

“Dad called Mom that evening. He said he was going to meet Richard and hand over the financial records. Mom panicked. She thought Dad would report everything, and she'd be arrested for helping move the money.””

“So you went with her?””

“She told me to come because she needed someone to talk to Dad. She thought he'd listen to me.””

“And did he?””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“He was furious. He said he'd already given Mom enough chances. He told her he was going to the police no matter what she said.””

My hands began to shake.

“What happened at the intersection?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Mom was driving. Dad had pulled over beside the road. He got out of his car and came toward us. They argued through the window.””

“Then?””

“He reached inside to take the keys.””

My mother lifted her head.

“Vanessa, stop.””

“No!”” Vanessa screamed.

“I'm done protecting you!””

She turned toward me.

“Mom started the car. Dad was still holding the door. She accelerated, and he lost his footing. He fell against the road.””

I pressed a hand to my mouth.

“Was he alive?””

Vanessa began sobbing.

“Yes.””

The ballroom seemed to spin around me.

“Was he alive when you left him?””

She nodded.

“Mom said he was breathing. She said she would call an ambulance.””

I turned toward Patricia.

“Did you?””

My mother shook her head frantically.

“I was going to.””

“Did you?””

She couldn't answer.

Vanessa spoke through her tears.

“She drove away. I begged her to turn around, but she said we couldn't stop. She said Dad had been drinking, that the police would blame him, that we'd lose everything if they discovered the money.””

I felt as if someone had reached inside my chest and torn something apart.

“My father was lying injured on the road, and you drove away?””

Patricia rose unsteadily.

“I thought he would get up. I thought someone would find him.””

“You left him there!””

“I was afraid!””

I slapped the table so hard the glasses rattled.

“Stop saying that! You were afraid of losing money, so you left your husband to die?””

Patricia flinched.

“I called Richard afterward. He said he'd handle everything. He arranged for the accident report to be closed. I didn't know he would—”

“You didn't know what? That Dad would die? That the truth would eventually come out?””

She started crying harder.

I turned away because I couldn't bear to look at her.

Graham stood beside Vanessa, his face ashen.

“You told me your father died of a heart attack.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“I know.””

“You told me you spent the night with your mother at the hospital.””

“I know.””

“You lied about everything.””

“I was trying to protect my family!””

Graham laughed bitterly.

“You keep using that word. Family. You watched your father die, helped your mother cover it up, and then married me for money. What part of that was love?””

Vanessa dropped to her knees.

“Graham, please. I love you.””

He stepped back.

“Get up.””

“Please don't leave me.””

“I'm not leaving you tonight, Vanessa. I'm leaving the woman I thought I married.””

He removed his wedding jacket and handed it to a waiting attendant.

Then he looked toward Agent Ellis, who had returned to the ballroom.

“I want to cooperate fully. I'll provide every document I have.””

The agent nodded.

“That's your decision, Mr. Whitmore.””

She turned toward Vanessa and Patricia.

“Both of you will need to accompany us for formal interviews. You are not being asked to make any further statements here.””

As officers approached them, my mother reached toward me.

“Claire, please. You're my daughter.””

I stared at her.

“So was Vanessa. So was I. And Dad was your husband.””

She began to sob.

I took Lily's hand and walked toward the doors.

Daniel followed several steps behind, careful not to touch me.

Outside, the night air was cold. The ocean wind carried the smell of salt and rain. Wedding guests clustered near their cars, whispering into phones and staring at us as we emerged.

Lily leaned against my side.

“Mom, is Grandpa really gone?””

I knelt and held her face between my hands.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

“Was he a good man?””

Tears blurred my vision.

“He was a good father. And he loved us.””

She nodded slowly.

“Then I wish Grandma had told the truth.””

“So do I.””

Daniel stood a few feet away, his hands in his coat pockets.

“Claire, I can take you both home.””

I looked at him.

“Not yet.””

He nodded.

“I understand.””

“No, Daniel. You don't. You don't get to return after three years and decide that standing beside us makes everything better.””

“I know.””

“I need time.””

“I'll give you as much as you need.””

A black SUV pulled into the estate driveway.

An officer stepped out and approached Agent Ellis, who was standing near the entrance.

“Agent, we've got a problem.””

She turned.

“What kind of problem?””

“The passenger in Richard Whitmore's vehicle has disappeared.””

The officer handed her a photograph.

Agent Ellis stared at it.

Then she looked at Vanessa, who was being escorted toward a waiting police car.

“Mrs. Whitmore, we need to know something.””

Vanessa stopped walking.

“Who was supposed to meet your father tonight?””

My sister looked at the photograph.

Her face turned white.

“That's impossible,” she whispered.

I stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

Vanessa raised her eyes to mine.

May you like

Then she said a name that made Daniel stumble backward.

“Your father.””
