Chapter 2: The Video Nobody Was Supposed to See

The courtroom monitor flickered.

For a moment, there was only a dark screen and the faint sound of someone moving a chair.

Then Vanessa appeared.

She was sitting at our old kitchen table, wearing the blue sweater I'd bought her for Christmas two years earlier.

A glass of wine stood beside her.

Daniel sat opposite her, his sleeves rolled up and his expensive watch resting beside a folder.

I recognized the kitchen immediately.

It was the house I'd spent eleven years paying for.

The house where Lily had taken her first steps.

The house where my father had celebrated his seventieth birthday.

And apparently, the place where my wife and brother had been plotting behind my back.

On the recording, Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

"Once Marcus loses custody, he won't have any reason to fight us over the house.""

Daniel laughed.

"You're assuming he'll accept the decision.""

Vanessa shrugged.

"He won't have a choice. His lawyer has already spent half his savings.""

Daniel opened the folder.

"And what about the money in Lily's trust?""

Vanessa smiled.

"Her father won't be able to protect it once we finish what we started.""

I stood so quickly that my chair scraped against the floor.

"What trust?""

Rachel grabbed my arm.

"Marcus, sit down.""

I stared at the screen.

"What trust is she talking about?""

Judge Whitmore paused the video.

"Mr. Bennett, please remain seated. We will address that question.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She wasn't crying anymore.

She was staring at the floor.

My attorney leaned toward me.

"Did your father establish a trust for Lily?""

"My father told me he had set aside money for her education. Vanessa handled the paperwork after he died.""

"How much?""

"I don't know. Vanessa told me the account had been closed because of medical expenses and estate debts.""

Rachel's expression changed.

"Did you see the documentation?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

Across the room, Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"That recording is private. It was taken without my permission.""

Judge Whitmore turned toward her.

"Mrs. Bennett, the court will determine its admissibility. You will not interrupt the proceedings.""

Daniel wasn't present in the courtroom.

He had claimed to be out of state for business.

But his voice was unmistakable.

The judge instructed the court officer to continue the recording.

The video resumed.

Daniel tapped the folder.

"You're sure Marcus signed everything?""

Vanessa nodded.

"He signed the authorization when his father was in the hospital. He thought it was just paperwork for the estate.""

Daniel smiled.

"Good. Because once the transfer is complete, there's no going back.""

My stomach tightened.

I remembered that day.

My father had suffered a severe stroke. He couldn't speak properly, and his right hand barely moved.

Vanessa had brought a stack of documents to the hospital.

She told me they were insurance forms and medical authorizations.

I had been exhausted, terrified, and desperate to keep my father comfortable.

I signed where she pointed.

"Did you ever see those documents again?"" Rachel whispered.

"No.""

On the screen, Vanessa leaned closer to Daniel.

"What if Marcus asks the bank?""

Daniel laughed.

"Then tell him the account was used for your father's care.""

"But what if he wants proof?""

"By then, the money won't be in the same place.""

Vanessa lifted her glass.

"To a fresh start.""

Daniel raised his.

"To finally getting what we deserve.""

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

I could hear the air conditioner humming above us.

Then I turned toward Vanessa.

"How could you?""

She looked at me with red eyes.

"Marcus, you don't understand.""

"Then explain it.""

"It wasn't what it looked like.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You were sitting at my kitchen table discussing how to take my daughter's money.""

"That money was being wasted!""

"By whom?""

She looked away.

Judge Whitmore addressed the attorneys.

"The court will preserve the device and refer the material for appropriate forensic review. Any financial allegations will require independent documentation.""

Rachel nodded.

"Understood, Your Honor.""

But Lily was tugging at my sleeve.

I bent toward her.

"What is it, sweetheart?""

She glanced at her mother.

"There's another video.""

Vanessa immediately stood.

"No! There isn't!""

Lily flinched.

The judge looked sharply at her.

"Mrs. Bennett, sit down.""

Lily's fingers tightened around mine.

"Mommy told Uncle Daniel to delete it.""

My heart started pounding.

"What video, Lily?""

She whispered, "The one from Grandpa's hospital.""

Rachel looked at the judge.

"Your Honor, given the child's statement, I request permission for the court officer to preserve and review the additional recording, subject to the same safeguards.""

Judge Whitmore considered it before nodding.

"Proceed carefully.""

Lily touched the screen.

A thumbnail appeared.

It showed a hospital hallway.

I recognized the beige walls, the vending machine near the elevators, and the wooden door outside my father's room.

The date displayed at the bottom was three months before his death.

My throat went dry.

The recording began.

Daniel stood outside my father's hospital room holding a brown folder.

Vanessa approached him.

She looked over both shoulders before speaking.

"Does Marcus still believe his father changed the will before the stroke?""

Daniel shook his head.

"He doesn't suspect a thing.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Good. And you're sure nobody will ever find out what we put in his medication?""

My entire body went cold.

I couldn't breathe.

"What did you just say?""

Rachel stood beside me.

"Marcus, don't.""

On the screen, Daniel glanced toward the hospital door.

Then he whispered something.

Something the microphone barely captured.

Judge Whitmore leaned forward.

"Increase the volume.""

The court officer adjusted the recording.

Daniel's voice came through.

"Stop worrying. The doctor already signed the report.""

Vanessa looked nervous.

"What if he remembers?""

Daniel gave a cold laugh.

"He won't.""

Then the video showed Daniel opening the hospital room door.

Before he entered, Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

"One more thing.""

"What?""

"If Marcus ever finds out about the original will, we're finished.""

Daniel smiled.

"Then make sure he never finds out.""

The recording ended.

I sat motionless.

My father had died believing he had protected his granddaughter.

And my own brother had apparently been involved in something that I couldn't even bring myself to name.

Then Lily whispered into my ear.

"Daddy?""

I turned toward her.

"Yes, baby?""

"Grandpa told me something before he died.""

My heart stopped.

"What did Grandpa tell you?""

May you like

She looked directly at the judge.

"He said Mommy and Uncle Daniel were going to take something from me.""
