Chapter 14: The Mother Who Was Never Dead
Rachel stared at me.
"Marcus, are you saying your mother is alive?""
I nodded slowly.
"Six months ago, I received a letter from a woman claiming to be her. It was postmarked from Oregon.""
"Why didn't you tell anyone?""
"Because I thought it was a cruel joke.""
I remembered the letter.
It had arrived in a plain white envelope with no return address.
Inside was a photograph of my mother standing beside a lake.
She looked older, thinner, but unmistakably familiar.
The note contained only three sentences.
*Marcus, I know what your father told you. I am aliveBecause I thought it was a cruel joke.""

Marcus, I know what your father told you. I am alive. Don't trust Daniel.
I'd shown Vanessa.
She had laughed and told me someone was trying to manipulate me.
Then she'd thrown the letter into the fireplace.
I'd never mentioned it again.
Now I wished I had kept the photograph.
Detective Walker opened his notebook.
"Do you remember the postmark?""
"Oregon. Portland, I think.""
"Did you keep the envelope?""
"No. Vanessa destroyed it.""
Rachel looked troubled.
"Did you respond?""
"No.""

"No.""
Walker made a note.
"We'll investigate.""
Then he received another call.
He listened for several seconds.
"Understood.""
He ended it.
"Mr. Bennett, we have located a woman matching your mother's identity.""
My heart began racing.
"Where?""
"At a small property outside Portland. She has agreed made a note.
"We'll investigate.""

"At a small property outside Portland. She has agreed to speak with investigators.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"Is she really my mother?""
"We're arranging identity verification.""
I looked at Rachel.
"I need to speak to her.""
"Not until the investigators confirm her identity and establish that the contact is safe.""
I hated waiting.
But Rachel was right.
The next morning, Detective Walker arranged a secure video call.
A woman appeared on the screen.
Her hair was almost entirely gray.
Her face was to speak with investigators.""

Her hair was almost entirely gray.
Her face was older, her cheeks thinner.
But her eyes were the same.
The same eyes I remembered from childhood.
She looked at me.
"Marcus?""
I couldn't speak.
She covered her mouth.
"Oh, my boy.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
"Mom?""
She started crying.
"I'm so sorry.""
I stared at her.
"You've older, her cheeks thinner.

I stared at her.
"You've been alive all these years?""
She nodded.
"Your father and I separated. He told you I had died because he believed it would protect you.""
"Protect me from what?""
She looked down.
"From Daniel.""
I felt sick.
"What did Daniel do?""
"When you were younger, he started stealing money from your father's company. Your father discovered it and threatened to report him.""
"That was years ago.""
"Yes. But Daniel didn't stop.""
She wiped her cheeks.
"Your father was afraid Daniel been alive all these years?""

"Your father was afraid Daniel would hurt you if he exposed him.""
"Then why did you leave?""
"Because Daniel threatened to frame me for financial fraud. Your father arranged for me to disappear while he tried to gather evidence.""
I shook my head.
"You let me believe you were dead.""
"I know.""
"Do you understand what that did to me?""
She began crying harder.
"I do, Marcus. I have regretted it every day.""
I looked away.
For years would hurt you if he exposed him.""

"I do, Marcus. I have regretted it every day.""
I looked away.
For years, I'd visited her grave.
I'd brought flowers.
I'd told Lily stories about the grandmother she would never meet.
And now the woman I'd buried in my memory was sitting on a screen, apologizing.
Rachel interrupted gently.
"Mrs. Bennett, we need to ask about the medication authorization.""
My mother nodded.
"Daniel contacted me shortly before Arthur's stroke.""
"What did he want?""
"He, I'd visited her grave.

"Daniel contacted me shortly before Arthur's stroke.""
"What did he want?""
"He wanted my old medical records.""
"Why?""
"He told me he needed to prove that Arthur had been taking medication incorrectly for years.""
Rachel leaned forward.
"Did you provide anything?""
"No.""
"Did you sign an authorization?""
"Absolutely not.""
My mother paused.
Then she said something that made my heart stop.
"But Daniel did have a copy of my old signature.""
"How?""
"Your father kept our divorce documents in a locked cabinet. Daniel had access to them.""
I closed my eyes.
That wanted my old medical records.""

"Your father kept our divorce documents in a locked cabinet. Daniel had access to them.""
I closed my eyes.
That explained the handwriting on the authorization.
Someone had copied my mother's signature and used it to create a false medical instruction.
But why?
Rachel asked the question.
My mother took a breath.
"Because Daniel needed a second signature to make the medication change appear legitimate. He thought the hospital would never question a document explained the handwriting on the authorization.

My mother took a breath.
"Because Daniel needed a second signature to make the medication change appear legitimate. He thought the hospital would never question a document bearing both a family authorization and a physician's approval.""
"Did you know he was planning to hurt Arthur?""
"No. I didn't know until after the stroke.""
"Then why didn't you come forward?""
She looked directly into the camera.
"Because Daniel sent me a photograph of bearing both a family authorization and a physician's approval.""

My stomach dropped.
"What?""
"He said if I returned to Atlanta, she would disappear.""
I felt rage rising inside me.
"He threatened my daughter?""
My mother nodded.
"That's why I stayed away.""
Rachel asked whether she had any evidence.
My mother reached out of view and returned with a thick envelope.
"Your father sent me this before he died. He said I should keep it until the right moment Lily.""

She held it toward the camera.
Inside was a letter and a small photograph.
The photograph showed Daniel standing beside Dr. Price outside the hospital.
But there was someone else in the background.
Vanessa.
And she was holding a folder.
My mother opened the letter.
"Arthur wrote that Daniel had already moved the money, but he didn't know who had arranged the hospital payments.""
She looked at me.
"Then he discovered something.""
"What?""
My mother swallowed.
"Vanessa wasn't helping Daniel because she loved him.""
I stared at.""

"What do you mean?""
"She was blackmailing him.""
Rachel sat forward.
"With what?""
My mother unfolded the final page.
"She had evidence that Daniel had been stealing from the company for years. She threatened to expose him unless he gave her control of Lily's inheritance.""
I felt my stomach twist.
"So they were both using each other.""
"Yes," my mother whispered.
Then she pointed to the photograph.
"But there is something you haven't noticed.""
I leaned closer.
She pointed at her.

She pointed at the folder Vanessa was carrying.
On its cover was a company name.
*BENNETT FAMILY HOLDINGS.*
My mother looked directly at me.
"Marcus, that company wasn't owned by your father.""
"Who owned it?""
She began crying again.
"You did.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"Your father transferred the company into your name when you were a child. Daniel and Vanessa weren't just stealing Lily's inheritance.""
She paused.

"The company is worth nearly twelve million dollars.""
