Chapter 12: The Last Thing My Father Left Me

The drive to Lake Lanier felt endless.

Detective Walker had instructed us to remain behind the responding officers, but every minute seemed unbearable.

I kept looking at my phone.

No messages from Daniel.

No calls from Vanessa.

Nothing.

I wondered whether my brother was destroying the only evidence that could explain what happened to our father.

Rachel sat beside me.

"Marcus, listen. The police are handling the scene. Don't approach Daniel if you see him.""

"I understand.""

"Your daughter needs you alive and present. Whatever happens tonight, remember that.""

I looked at the photograph of Lily on my phone.

She was smiling, holding the teddy bear she'd carried into court.

I had taken it on her seventh birthday.

Back then, I thought the biggest problem in our family was Vanessa's growing resentment toward me.

I had no idea how much had been happening behind closed doors.

When we arrived, several police vehicles were already parked outside the cabin.

Smoke drifted above the trees.

An officer approached Walker.

"Detective, the fire department is here. We have the building secured.""

"Where's Daniel?""

"Inside the property when officers arrived. He attempted to leave through the rear entrance.""

"Was he arrested?""

"He's being detained.""

I stepped out of the vehicle.

Through the trees, I could see the cabin where my father used to take Daniel and me fishing.

The porch was still painted white.

The old wooden rocking chair remained beside the front door.

But the small storage shed behind the cabin was burning.

My father's wooden sailboat was visible through the open doorway.

One of its sails had already caught fire.

I started forward.

Rachel grabbed my arm.

"Marcus!""

I stopped.

A firefighter rushed past us.

The flames were quickly contained.

Then two officers escorted Daniel out of the cabin.

His shirt was stained with soot.

When he saw me, he stopped walking.

"Marcus.""

I stared at him.

"How could you?""

He gave a tired laugh.

"You're still asking the wrong questions.""

I stepped closer.

"You stole from your own niece. You lied about Dad. You forged documents.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"You think you know everything because you watched a few videos?""

"I know enough.""

"No, you don't.""

An officer ordered him to keep moving.

Daniel turned toward me.

"Ask Vanessa why she wanted your father dead.""

My stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel smiled bitterly.

"She had more to lose than I did.""

The officers placed him inside a police vehicle.

Rachel pulled me away before I could respond.

Detective Walker approached.

"We recovered several items from the cabin. The fire didn't destroy everything.""

"Did you find the boat?""

He nodded.

"The exterior is damaged, but the hidden compartment appears intact.""

I closed my eyes.

"Can I see it?""

"After the evidence technicians finish.""

We waited near the perimeter while the investigators worked.

Eventually, an officer approached with a clear evidence container.

Inside was a small silver key.

My heart started pounding.

It was the key Lily had described.

The technician explained that it had been recovered from the wooden boat's damaged base.

There was also a small memory card sealed inside a metal compartment.

Rachel immediately requested that the card be preserved and examined by the forensic team.

We were allowed to review a verified copy later that evening.

The recording began with my father's voice.

"Daniel, sit down.""

The camera showed my father's office.

Daniel sat opposite him, looking irritated.

"Dad, I don't have time for this.""

"You have time to steal from your granddaughter?""

Daniel rolled his eyes.

"You're confused.""

My father's expression changed.

"Don't insult me.""

He placed several bank statements on the desk.

"I know about the transfers. I know about the forged signatures. And I know you've been talking to Samuel Price.""

Daniel leaned back.

"You're making a mistake.""

"No. I made a mistake when I trusted you.""

Daniel's voice became cold.

"What do you want?""

"Return the money.""

"Which money?""

"All of it.""

Daniel laughed.

"You can't prove anything.""

My father opened another folder.

"Then explain these.""

The screen showed several pages of financial transactions.

Payments from Lily's trust.

Transfers to a private account.

And repeated payments to a company registered under Laura Price's name.

Rachel leaned forward.

"That's the company connected to the hospital.""

The recording continued.

Daniel looked nervous.

"You're going to destroy this family over money?""

My father shook his head.

"You destroyed this family when you decided your granddaughter was something you could steal from.""

Daniel stood.

"You're getting old, Dad. You don't understand how business works.""

My father looked directly at him.

"I understand exactly how you work.""

Daniel slammed his hand on the desk.

"You think Marcus is innocent? You think he didn't sign those papers?""

My father answered immediately.

"Marcus never signed them.""

Daniel froze.

My father's voice grew stronger.

"I had every document examined. The signatures were forged.""

Daniel looked toward the door.

Then my father said something that made the entire room go silent.

"I've already sent copies to the authorities.""

Daniel's face changed.

"You're bluffing.""

"Am I?""

Daniel moved closer.

"What did you send them?""

My father looked at the camera.

"Everything.""

The video abruptly ended.

I sat motionless.

Rachel slowly turned toward me.

"Marcus, there's another file.""

The technician opened it.

It was an audio recording.

A conversation between my father and Dr. Price.

Dr. Price's voice was unmistakable.

"Arthur, you need to understand. I was paid to adjust the medication, not to kill you.""

My father's voice sounded weak.

"Who paid you?""

"I already told you. Daniel arranged everything.""

"And Vanessa?""

A pause.

"She handled the transfers.""

My hands began trembling.

Then Dr. Price said something that made Rachel cover her mouth.

"Your son didn't want you dead, Arthur. He wanted you unconscious long enough to sign the final trust documents.""

My father whispered:

"Then why did you increase the dosage?""

Dr. Price didn't answer.

Instead, he said:

"Because someone changed the instructions after I left.""

The recording ended.

Rachel immediately called Detective Walker.

The implications were enormous.

Daniel had allegedly arranged the scheme, Vanessa had handled the money, and Dr. Price had admitted to manipulating medication. But the recording also suggested that someone had changed the dosage beyond what had originally been planned.

Someone else had been involved.

The forensic team began processing the remaining files.

Then a technician discovered a hidden document.

It was a scanned letter written by my father.

The first paragraph was addressed to me.

Marcus, if you have reached this point, then the people I feared have finally been exposed.

The second paragraph mentioned Lily's trust.

The third mentioned the money.

But the final paragraph made my heart stop.

There is one person I have not named because I wanted to protect you from the truth until I had enough evidence.

I leaned closer.

The final sentence read:

The person who changed my medication was not Daniel, Vanessa, or Dr. Price.

Rachel stared at the screen.

"Then who was it?""

The technician opened the attached photograph.

It showed someone standing outside my father's hospital room.

Someone holding a medical chart.

Someone I had trusted for years.

My father had written a name beneath the photograph.

*MARCUS BENNETT.*

I stared at my own name.

And for the first time, I wondered whether someone had been using my identity to make it look as though I had helped destroy my own father.

Rachel whispered:

"Marcus, we need to find out who had access to your signature.""

But before I could answer, Detective Walker entered the room.

His expression was grave.

"Mr. Bennett, we have a problem.""

He placed another photograph on the table.

It showed my father's hospital medication authorization.

The signature at the bottom was mine.

May you like

And beneath it was a handwritten instruction:

*INCREASE DOSAGE — AS REQUESTED BY SON.*
