Chapter 4: The Woman From Emily’s Past
I didn’t sleep after that phone call.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I was trying to understand how my entire life could have been built on missing pieces.
For five years, I believed I knew everything about Emily’s final days.
I believed I knew who loved her.
Who stood beside her.
Who hurt with me when we lost her.
But now I was discovering there were secrets buried beneath the memories I treasured most.
And somehow, Vanessa was connected to all of them.
The next morning, the unknown number called again.
I answered immediately.
“Who are you?””
A woman sighed.
“My name is Rachel Morgan.””
The name meant nothing to me.
“How did you know Emily?””
There was a long pause.
“I was her nurse.””
I sat down.
“Her nurse?””
“Yes. I worked with Emily during the last months of her treatment.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Why did you call me?””
“Because Emily asked me to.””
My heart stopped.
“She asked you?””
“Daniel, your wife knew something was wrong.””
I looked toward the hallway where Sophie’s bedroom door was closed.
“What do you mean?””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“Emily believed someone was trying to manipulate her before she died.””
The room suddenly felt colder.
“Who?””
“I think you already know.””
“Vanessa?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
“Tell me everything.””
“I can’t over the phone.””
“Why?””
“Because if Vanessa knows I contacted you, she’ll destroy the evidence.””
My jaw tightened.
“What evidence?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then she said:
“The reason Emily hid that message inside the bracelet.””
An hour later, I met Rachel at a small coffee shop across town.
I recognized her immediately.
She was older than I expected, with tired eyes and a nervous expression.
When she saw me, she stood.
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me carefully.
“You look exactly like Emily described.””
That sentence hit me harder than I expected.
“She talked about me?””
Rachel smiled sadly.
“All the time.””
We sat down.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Rachel pulled an envelope from her purse.
“Emily gave me this three days before she passed away.””
I stared at it.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
Rachel looked down.
“Because Emily made me promise not to unless Vanessa came back into your life.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“She knew Vanessa would eventually find a way back.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, something happened that made you open the bracelet.
Please listen carefully.
Not everything Vanessa tells you is true.
I stopped reading.
My hands shook.
Rachel watched me.
“She was terrified.””
“Of Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rachel looked around before speaking.
“Because Vanessa wasn’t just someone Emily knew.””
I looked up.
“What was she?””
Rachel swallowed.
“She was Emily’s sister.””
The words didn’t make sense.
I stared at her.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Emily never told you?””
I stood up.
“No. Emily never had a sister.””
Rachel’s face softened.
“She did.””
I sat back down slowly.
“Where is she?””
Rachel looked at me.
“She died.””
The silence was unbearable.
Then Rachel continued.
“Emily told everyone she was an only child because she was protecting Sophie.””
“Protecting her from her own sister?””
Rachel nodded.
“She said Vanessa had become obsessed with taking everything Emily had.””
I looked down at the bracelet.
A horrible thought entered my mind.
“She wanted the bracelet.””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
“Then what?””
Rachel leaned closer.
“She wanted Emily’s life.””
Before I could respond, my phone buzzed.
A message from Sophie’s school.
My heart dropped.
I opened it.
Sophie had been picked up early.
By Vanessa.
I immediately stood.
“She took my daughter.””
Rachel grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“Don’t go alone.””
“Why?””
Rachel’s face turned pale.
“Because Emily wasn’t afraid of what Vanessa would do to her.””
May you like
She looked toward the window.
“She was afraid of what Vanessa would do to Sophie.””
