Chapter 10: The Message Emily Left Behind

I stared at the paper until the words blurred.

Emily.

My wife’s name was written at the bottom.

Impossible.

Emily had been gone for five years.

She couldn’t have taken Sophie.

She couldn’t have left me a message.

Unless…

I was missing something.

I grabbed my phone and called the police.

But before I could press the call button, another thought stopped me.

The note wasn’t written like a threat.

It wasn’t written like Vanessa or Michael.

It sounded like Emily.

Calm.

Precise.

Like she had planned every word.

I picked up the bracelet from the table.

The tiny heart charm was still open.

Inside was another compartment I hadn’t noticed before.

My hands shook as I searched it.

A small memory card fell into my palm.

I froze.

Emily had hidden a recording.

I grabbed my laptop and opened the file.

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then I heard her voice.

A voice I hadn’t heard in years.

“Daniel.””

My entire body went numb.

“Don’t panic.””

A broken laugh escaped my lips.

Of course.

Even after death, Emily knew me.

“You’re probably angry. Confused. Maybe even hurt.””

I closed my eyes.

Tears filled them.

“But if you’re hearing this, it means Vanessa found the bracelet.””

I looked at the screen.

Emily continued.

“I need you to understand something. Everything I did was to protect Sophie.””

I whispered:

“What did you do?””

The recording continued.

“Sophie is not your biological daughter.””

My heart broke all over again.

“But Daniel, she is your daughter in every way that matters.””

I covered my face.

Emily’s voice trembled.

“The man who fathered Sophie disappeared before she was born. He wasn’t supposed to be part of our lives.””

I leaned closer.

“Then who was he?””

Emily answered like she knew I would ask.

“His name was Michael Carter.””

I froze.

Michael.

The man who had just entered Dr. Harris’s office.

Michael.

Vanessa’s adoptive father.

The recording continued.

“Michael was dangerous. He had connections, money, and a need to control everyone around him. When he discovered Sophie existed, he wanted custody.””

My blood ran cold.

“He believed Sophie belonged to his family.””

I remembered Vanessa’s words.

Your daughter.

Not Sophie.

Your daughter.

Emily continued.

“I fought him. I fought harder than I ever thought I could. But when I got sick, I realized I couldn’t protect Sophie alone.””

The recording paused.

Then her voice softened.

“That’s why I chose you.””

I stopped breathing.

“Daniel, you always told me you weren’t ready to be a father. But the first night you held Sophie, you became one.””

I wiped my eyes.

“You never cared about biology. You cared about her.””

The recording crackled.

“I made arrangements with Dr. Harris. If anything happened to me, he would protect the documents proving Sophie was safe.””

I looked at the empty room.

“But there was one thing I didn’t know.””

Emily’s voice became serious.

“Vanessa found out.””

My fingers tightened.

“She discovered Sophie’s records. She discovered Michael was looking for her. And she made a choice.””

A long pause.

“She joined him.””

The room went silent.

I replayed those words in my head.

Vanessa joined him.

“She wasn’t trying to steal a bracelet,” Emily said.

“She was trying to find the final proof.””

I looked down at the bracelet.

“What proof?””

Emily’s voice lowered.

“The truth about Sophie’s real identity.””

The recording ended.

I sat there for several minutes.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man spoke.

“Daniel.””

I knew immediately.

Michael.

“Where is my daughter?””

A quiet laugh.

“You still call her that.””

“Yes.””

“Interesting.””

His voice became colder.

“Because you know the truth now.””

“I know enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

I stood.

“Where is Sophie?””

“Safe.””

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

A pause.

“She’s with someone who loves her.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Then I heard a sound.

A child’s voice.

“Daddy?””

“Sophie!””

I grabbed the phone.

“Sweetheart, are you okay?””

I heard her crying.

Then Michael took the phone back.

“You have one chance.””

“What do you want?””

“The original birth records.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“The file Emily hid.””

“I don’t have it.””

Michael laughed.

“You do.””

My eyes moved around the room.

The bracelet.

The notes.

The memories.

“The bracelet.””

“Exactly.””

My blood turned cold.

“What’s inside it?””

Michael whispered:

“The one thing Emily never wanted you to know.””

The call ended.

And for the first time, I realized something terrifying.

May you like

Emily hadn’t hidden the truth from Vanessa.

She had hidden it from me.
