Chapter 11: The Original Record

I tore through the bracelet with trembling hands.

Not because I wanted to destroy it.

Because I had no choice.

Michael had my daughter.

The tiny heart charm separated from the bracelet completely.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

And another key.

A small metal key with a number engraved on it.

217.

I unfolded the paper.

It wasn’t a letter.

It was a location.

A storage unit.

I grabbed my jacket.

Before leaving, I called Rachel.

She answered immediately.

“Daniel?””

“I found something.””

Her voice changed.

“What?””

“The key.””

There was silence.

Then:

“Where did you get it?””

“The bracelet.””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“Emily said that would be the last place.””

“The last place for what?””

“To hide the original records.””

I froze.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

My anger returned.

“You knew all this time?””

“I knew Emily had a plan. I didn’t know every detail.””

“You let me believe she betrayed me.””

Rachel’s voice softened.

“I never believed that.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Emily made me promise.””

I closed my eyes.

Everyone had promises.

Everyone had secrets.

Except me.

I was the only person who didn’t know the truth about my own family.

“Rachel, I need you to help me.””

“I’m coming.””

The storage unit was twenty minutes away.

It felt like twenty years.

When we arrived, Rachel met me outside.

She looked at the key.

“Unit 217.””

We found it at the end of the hallway.

My hands shook as I unlocked it.

Inside was a single box.

No money.

No jewelry.

No valuables.

Only documents.

Photos.

Letters.

And a video camera.

Rachel picked up a folder.

“Daniel…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She handed me a document.

I read it.

My heart stopped.

It was a legal guardianship agreement.

Between Emily and me.

For Sophie.

But underneath was another document.

A paternity report.

This one was different.

I scanned the results.

Then looked at Rachel.

“This says Michael isn’t her father.””

Rachel nodded.

“He wasn’t.””

“Then why did Emily say he was?””

“Because she needed him to believe that.””

I felt confused.

“Why?””

Rachel opened another file.

Inside was a letter from Emily.

Daniel,

If Michael believes Sophie is his biological daughter, he will never stop searching for her.

I read the next line.

But if he discovers the truth, he will know exactly why he wants her.

My hands tightened.

“What truth?””

Rachel pointed to the final page.

I read it.

And everything changed.

Sophie wasn’t connected to Michael by blood.

She was connected by something worse.

A secret.

A secret involving Vanessa.

A secret involving Emily.

A secret involving the reason Michael had spent ten years trying to find her.

I looked at Rachel.

“What happened before Sophie was born?””

Rachel looked away.

“I don’t know everything.””

“But you know something.””

She nodded.

“Emily discovered Vanessa was involved in a medical experiment.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“Vanessa was part of a fertility program.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“No.””

Rachel looked at the document.

“But the program was illegal.””

The room suddenly felt cold.

“Why?””

“Because they were using genetic material without permission.””

I swallowed.

“Whose genetic material?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

My eyes moved to Sophie’s name.

“No.””

Rachel whispered:

“Daniel, Sophie’s DNA was never supposed to exist.””

My phone rang.

Michael.

I answered.

His voice was calm.

“You found the box.””

I looked at Rachel.

“How do you know?””

“Because Emily always believed she could outsmart me.””

“You’re not getting Sophie.””

Michael laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“She isn’t the secret.””

I gripped the phone.

“Then what is?””

A pause.

Then Michael said:

“The person who created her.””

The call ended.

At that exact moment, Rachel’s face changed.

She looked toward the door.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

She whispered:

“I know who he means.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

May you like

Rachel slowly said:

“The person Emily spent her final months trying to find.””
