Chapter 14: The Choice That Changed Everything
I drove faster than I ever had.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was afraid.
Fear was something I understood now.
It wasn’t the fear of losing the truth.
It was the fear of losing my daughter.
My daughter.
Not because of blood.
Not because of DNA.
Because I had been there.
I had held her when she cried.
I had taught her how to ride a bike.
I had stayed awake all night when she had nightmares.
No document could erase that.
No test could change that.
Rachel sat beside me.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“You need to remember something.””
I kept my eyes on the road.
“What?””
“Sophie needs you calm.””
I nodded.
She was right.
Vanessa wanted me desperate.
Michael wanted me angry.
But Sophie needed her father.
We arrived at an old warehouse near the river.
Michael’s car was outside.
So was Vanessa’s.
I walked in slowly.
“Sophie!””
“Daddy!””
Her voice came from upstairs.
I ran toward it.
Then Vanessa stepped into view.
“Stop.””
I froze.
She held a small folder.
Sophie stood behind her.
Her face was scared.
But she wasn’t crying.
“Let her go.””
Vanessa smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
“I understand enough.””
“No.””
She looked at the folder.
“You think Emily protected Sophie.””
“She did.””
“She lied to you.””
“She saved her.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
For a second, I saw something else.
Pain.
Not anger.
Pain.
“She always chose everyone over me.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“You don’t know what it’s like.””
Her voice shook.
“Emily was always the good one.””
I stayed silent.
“She got the family. The husband. The child.””
“That wasn’t yours.””
Her face hardened.
“I know.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I know.””
She looked at Sophie.
“But I wanted something that was hers.””
I felt disgust.
“You hurt a child because you were jealous?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I didn’t mean to.””
I almost laughed.
“You slapped her.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I lost control.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You made a choice.””
Before she could answer, Michael appeared behind her.
“Enough.””
Vanessa immediately stepped aside.
And I saw the difference.
She was afraid of him.
Not working with him.
Afraid.
Michael walked forward.
“You ruined everything.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I did what you asked.””
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“You failed.””
I noticed something.
Vanessa wasn’t the mastermind.
She was another person Michael controlled.
Michael looked at me.
“Give me the research files.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“Then Sophie stays with me.””
Sophie suddenly shouted:
“Daddy!””
I looked at her.
She was holding something.
The bracelet.
The same bracelet Vanessa had stolen.
“How did you get that?””
Sophie looked at Michael.
“He took it from Vanessa.””
Michael’s expression changed.
The bracelet mattered.
Not because of the research.
Because of something else.
I realized.
The bracelet contained proof.
Proof of what Emily had discovered.
Proof that could destroy him.
I stepped forward.
“You never wanted Sophie.””
Michael smiled.
“Of course I did.””
“No.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then at him.
“You wanted the research.””
His silence confirmed it.
Behind me, Rachel quietly moved.
I understood.
She was calling for help.
Michael noticed.
He grabbed Sophie.
Everything happened at once.
I moved.
Vanessa screamed.
Rachel ran.
And Sophie dropped the bracelet.
It hit the floor.
The heart charm opened.
A tiny piece of metal slid out.
Michael froze.
Because he knew what it was.
A recording chip.
I picked it up.
And pressed play.
Emily’s voice filled the warehouse.
“Michael Carter, if you are hearing this, then you finally found Sophie.””
His face changed.
“But you made one mistake.””
Emily continued.
“You forgot that I knew exactly who you were.””
Michael stepped back.
The recording continued.
“I recorded every conversation. Every threat. Every illegal action.””
The police sirens suddenly echoed outside.
Michael looked toward the door.
May you like
And for the first time…
he looked afraid.
