Chapter 9: The Child With Two Names

I stared at the paper.

I read it again.

Then again.

The words didn’t change.

*LEONARD CARTER.*

My son’s name.

But the birth date was wrong.

The location was wrong.

And the mother’s name…

I stopped breathing.

The mother listed on the certificate was not Claire.

It was another woman.

A woman named Sarah Miller.

I looked at Noah.

“What is this?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Ethan grabbed the paper from my hand.

His eyes moved across it.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Noah looked at him.

“You know it isn’t.””

Claire’s voice came through my phone.

She had called moments earlier.

“David?””

I had forgotten the call was connected.

She heard everything.

“What’s happening?””

I didn’t know how to answer.

Because the impossible explanation was starting to become the only explanation.

“Noah,” I said slowly, “explain.””

He looked at the photograph on the wall.

“The boy your mother found beneath the house wasn’t me.””

Ethan stared at him.

“What?””

Noah continued.

“My father took children.””

The room became silent.

“He changed records. Changed names. Changed histories.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because he believed blood didn’t matter.””

Noah looked at me.

“He believed families could be created.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does that have to do with Leo?””

Noah stepped closer.

“Everything.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“You think Claire gave birth to Leo?””

The question hit me.

Of course she did.

I had been there.

I remembered the hospital.

The first cry.

The tiny fingers wrapped around mine.

But suddenly…

I remembered something else.

The paperwork.

The confusion.

The nurse who said there had been a mistake with the records.

A mistake we never questioned.

Noah watched my face.

“You remember.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“Stop.””

“The truth is always there.””

“Stop.””

Noah lowered his voice.

“Your son was taken from another family.””

I grabbed his shirt.

“Don’t talk about my son like he’s an object.””

Noah didn’t fight back.

“I’m trying to tell you he belongs to someone who has been searching for him.””

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Everyone froze.

Noah looked toward the window.

“He found us.””

“Who?””

Noah’s face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Your father-in-law.””

I stared at him.

“My father-in-law is dead.””

Noah shook his head.

“No.””

The front door opened.

Slowly.

A man walked inside.

Older.

Gray hair.

A familiar face from old photographs.

Claire’s father.

The man everyone believed had been dead for years.

He looked at Ethan.

Then Noah.

Then me.

Finally, he smiled.

“After twenty-eight years…”

His eyes moved toward the hallway.

“Someone finally brought my grandson home.””

My blood ran cold.

Because behind him stood Elina.

May you like

And she wasn’t crying anymore.

She was smiling.
