Chapter 14: The Last Secret Under the House
The words followed us back like a shadow.
There’s another child.
I wanted to believe it was impossible.
I wanted this nightmare to finally have an ending.
But every time we found an answer, another door opened.
Another secret waited.
Officer Ramirez arrived with more officers after Ethan called.
The old house was searched from top to bottom.
This time, nobody trusted anything.
Not the walls.
Not the floors.
Not the documents.
Not even the people standing beside each other.
I sat with Leo outside.
He leaned against me.
“Daddy?””
“Yeah?””
“Are we going home?””
The question broke something inside me.
Because I didn’t know what home meant anymore.
I looked at the burned house.
The hidden rooms.
The people who had lied for decades.
Then I looked at my son.
“Yes.””
I forced a smile.
“We’re going home.””
Behind me, Daniel stood silently.
I didn’t trust him.
But I understood him.
That was the hardest part.
Broken children sometimes became broken adults.
And broken adults sometimes hurt others.
Officer Ramirez approached.
“We found something.””
I stood.
“What?””
She held a folder.
“Another location.””
My heart sank.
“Where?””
She looked at the paper.
“Your original property records.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Before your house was built.””
She handed me the document.
The address was familiar.
Because it was my address.
But the date was impossible.
The property existed before the house.
Before Claire.
Before me.
Before everyone.
“There’s a basement.””
I looked at her.
“My house doesn’t have a basement.””
She nodded.
“Not anymore.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone removed the entrance.””
Daniel walked closer.
He looked at the document.
Then closed his eyes.
“My grandfather.””
I turned.
“What?””
“He didn’t destroy rooms.””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“He buried them.””
We returned home before sunrise.
The police followed.
The neighborhood was silent.
Almost peaceful.
It felt wrong.
Because beneath that normal street was something nobody knew existed.
My house.
My family.
My life.
All built over a secret.
The officers removed part of the floor near the old fireplace.
Exactly where the first hidden room had been discovered.
Hours passed.
Then a hollow sound echoed.
Everyone stopped.
A basement.
Under my house.
A place that wasn’t supposed to exist.
The entrance was opened.
A ladder descended into darkness.
I looked at Leo.
Then at Claire.
Then at the hole.
“I’m going.””
Claire grabbed my hand.
“Don’t.””
“I have to.””
She looked terrified.
“David.””
I touched her face.
“I’m bringing this to an end.””
Ethan came with me.
So did Daniel.
At the bottom was a room.
But this one was different.
It wasn’t a prison.
It looked like a child’s bedroom.
A bed.
Books.
Toys.
Drawings.
A life preserved.
On the wall were hundreds of marks.
Height measurements.
Dates.
Names.
And one name repeated over and over.
*LEONARD.*
My breathing stopped.
Ethan looked around.
“He was here.””
I touched one of the drawings.
A family.
A father.
A mother.
A child.
But the child had two names.
Leo.
And another.
Daniel picked up a notebook.
His face changed as he read.
“What?””
He handed it to me.
The first page contained a message.
*If you are reading this, then the final child has returned.*
My hands shook.
“Final child?””
I turned the page.
The next words were written by someone who had been waiting.
*The child you call Leo was never the experiment.*
I kept reading.
*He was the control.*
I looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
Because the final line was written underneath.
A sentence that changed everything.
*The only child who was never changed was the one who was born naturally.*
The room went silent.
Then I heard footsteps above us.
Slow.
Careful.
Someone was inside the house.
Someone who wasn’t a police officer.
Someone who had been waiting.
A voice came from above.
“David.””
I froze.
It was Claire.
But something was wrong.
Her voice sounded different.
Cold.
Empty.
“Come upstairs.””
I looked at Ethan.
At Daniel.
At the notebook.
Then I realized something.
May you like
The final secret was never beneath the house.
It was living with us.
