Chapter 7: The Name Written on the Photograph

Nobody moved.

The photograph sat on the top step like a warning.

A small boy’s face stared back at us.

He looked about five years old.

Dark hair.

Wide eyes.

A nervous smile.

The kind of smile children make when they are trying to convince everyone they are okay.

I turned the photograph over.

The writing on the back was still there.

*NOAH’S SON.*

My fingers went numb.

“What does that mean?”” I whispered.

Nobody answered.

Not Ethan.

Not Claire.

Not even Officer Ramirez.

Then Elina’s voice came from upstairs again.

“You deserve the truth, David.””

Officer Ramirez looked toward the staircase.

“Stay where you are, Elina.””

A few seconds passed.

Then Elina slowly appeared.

Her face was exhausted.

Her hair was messy.

For the first time since I met her, she didn’t look like the woman who always had everything under control.

She looked old.

Broken.

“You knew,” I said.

She stopped.

“You knew about Leo.””

Her eyes moved toward my son.

“I knew someone would find the room eventually.””

My grip tightened around Leo.

“That’s not what I asked.””

She looked at the photograph.

“You found him.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Found who?””

Elina looked at him.

And tears filled her eyes.

“Noah.””

The room became silent.

Ethan’s face changed.

“You know where he is?””

She closed her eyes.

“I know where he was.””

The words were worse.

Because they sounded like a goodbye.

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“No, you don’t get to do this. You don’t get to stand here after all these years and act like you’re the victim.””

Elina looked at her daughter.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Protect me from what?””

“The truth.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“My entire life was a lie.””

Elina looked down.

“Yes.””

Nobody expected her to admit it.

Not even me.

I stepped forward.

“Start talking.””

She looked at me.

“David…”

“Now.””

My voice echoed through the house.

“You brought my son into that room.””

“No.””

“Then why was he there?””

She looked toward Leo.

“Because someone else wanted you to find it.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Elina swallowed.

“I came here tonight because I knew he was watching.””

“Who?””

She looked at Ethan.

Then at the photograph.

“Noah.””

Ethan froze.

“He’s alive?””

Elina didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Officer Ramirez stepped forward.

“You’re saying Noah Miller is alive and involved in this?””

Elina nodded slowly.

“He never forgave me.””

“For what?”” Claire asked.

Elina’s eyes filled with tears.

“For choosing Ethan.””

Ethan stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She sat down on the stairs.

“I was nineteen when your father brought you into our home.””

Ethan looked confused.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

She looked at him.

“He told me you were abandoned.””

“That’s not true.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“You weren’t abandoned.””

She looked at Claire.

“Your father took you.””

Claire covered her mouth.

“What?””

Elina continued.

“He was obsessed with creating the perfect family.””

The room felt colder.

“He thought children could be replaced. He thought people were possessions.””

Ethan stepped backward.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Elina looked at him.

“He took you from somewhere else.””

I stared at her.

“And Noah?””

Her hands trembled.

“Noah was the one who found out.””

“What did he do?””

“He tried to tell everyone.””

She looked at Ethan.

“And your father stopped him.””

A horrible silence followed.

Then Ethan whispered:

“How?””

Elina looked away.

“He built the room.””

The same hidden room.

The same place beneath my house.

The same place where my son had almost died.

My stomach twisted.

“Your husband built a prison under my house?””

Elina looked at me.

“Yes.””

“And you knew?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“You knew.””

Her silence confirmed it.

Claire started crying.

“Mom…”

Elina looked at her daughter.

“I was afraid.””

“No.””

Claire shook her head.

“You were selfish.””

The words hurt because they were true.

Elina lowered her head.

“I thought if I stayed quiet, nobody else would get hurt.””

I looked at Leo.

At the tiny boy holding my hand.

“You were wrong.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Before anyone could say more, the lights flickered.

Then every phone in the room buzzed at the same time.

Officer Ramirez looked at hers.

Her face changed.

“What?””

I looked at her.

“What is it?””

She turned the screen toward us.

A message.

From the same unknown number.

But this time, it wasn’t a threat.

It was a location.

May you like

And one sentence.

*COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO YOUR SON REALLY IS.*
