Chapter 5: The Room Behind the Wall

The police had already searched beneath the floor.

They had taken pictures.

Collected evidence.

Looked through every corner of the hidden space.

But nobody had noticed the wall.

Nobody except Ethan.

He stood in the living room staring at the far corner near the old fireplace.

“That’s where it is.””

I followed his gaze.

“There’s another room behind that wall?””

He nodded.

“How do you know?””

“Because I built the door.””

The words made me stop.

“You?””

Ethan looked at the floor.

“When I was a child, your father-in-law made me help him.””

Claire stepped closer.

“My father made you?””

Ethan nodded.

“He told me it was just a storage area.””

His voice became quieter.

“Children believe adults.””

I looked at the wall.

A normal wall.

Painted white.

Nothing unusual.

But after what I had discovered, I no longer trusted anything inside my own house.

Ethan walked closer.

“There’s a seam.””

I looked carefully.

At first, I saw nothing.

Then I noticed it.

A thin vertical line.

Almost invisible.

My hands went cold.

“How long has this been here?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Because the answer didn’t matter.

What mattered was that someone had hidden something inside our home for years.

The police returned twenty minutes later.

Officer Ramirez listened as Ethan explained.

She didn’t look convinced.

“You’re telling me there’s another hidden room?””

“Yes.””

“And you know because?””

“Because I was trapped there.””

The officer studied him.

“Trapped?””

Ethan nodded.

“For three days.””

Claire looked horrified.

“What?””

Ethan looked at her.

“I tried to leave.””

His voice shook.

“Your father caught me.””

The room became silent.

“What happened?”” Claire asked.

Ethan looked away.

“He told me nobody would miss me.””

Claire started crying.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She covered her face.

“My father would never…”

Ethan interrupted softly.

“Claire, you were a child. He knew you wouldn’t understand.””

Officer Ramirez examined the wall.

“Do we have permission to open this?””

I looked around.

This was my house.

But somehow, I felt like I was standing in someone else’s nightmare.

“Do it.””

The officers removed the panel.

Behind it was darkness.

A narrow passage.

The smell that came out was horrible.

Old air.

Mold.

And something metallic.

A flashlight moved inside.

Then someone stopped.

“What is it?”” I asked.

The officer didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

Finally, she stepped back.

“Mr. Carter…”

I walked closer.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“There are belongings inside.””

“What kind?””

She swallowed.

“Children’s belongings.””

Claire grabbed my arm.

“No.””

I looked into the room.

There were old toys.

A broken wooden train.

A small backpack.

And dozens of drawings pinned to the wall.

Ethan covered his mouth.

“I thought they were gone.””

I stepped inside carefully.

One drawing caught my attention.

A picture of a family.

A man.

A woman.

Two children.

But there was something strange.

The second child had been crossed out.

Written underneath were five words.

*HE WAS NEVER ALONE.*

I felt a chill run through me.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan whispered:

“Because I wasn’t the only child.””

Claire looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

He pointed to the corner.

There was a small wooden box.

Old.

Covered in dust.

On top was a name.

Not Ethan’s.

Not Leo’s.

Not mine.

A name I had never heard.

*NOAH MILLER.*

Claire’s face changed.

“Another brother?””

Ethan slowly nodded.

“My twin.””

The room went silent.

I looked at the name.

Then at Ethan.

“You had a twin?””

“Yes.””

“Where is he?””

Ethan stared into the darkness.

“I don’t know.””

Then the lights in the house suddenly went out.

Everyone froze.

A second later, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Another message.

This time, there was a picture attached.

A picture of Leo.

Sleeping.

Taken moments earlier.

My hands began shaking.

May you like

Because beneath the picture were the words:

*I KNOW WHERE NOAH IS.*
