Chapter 9: The Will Nobody Was Allowed to Read
The ballroom seemed to shrink around me.
I could hear the soft rustle of Emily's dress as she shifted beside Lily. Somewhere near the bar, a guest whispered that the wedding should be canceled. The pianist had abandoned his instrument entirely.
But all I could think about was my mother's will.
“Explain what you mean,” I said to Ryan.
He smiled faintly.
“You'll have to ask Richard.””
Every head turned toward the lawyer.
Richard's fingers tightened around the handle of his briefcase.
“I won't participate in this circus.””
Officer Bennett stepped in front of him.
“You're not going anywhere yet.””
Richard looked at me.
“James, your mother made several changes to her estate in the final months of her life. Those changes were entirely legal.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
“Because you weren't entitled to every detail of her private affairs.””
“I was her son.””
“And she was entitled to privacy.””
His response sounded rehearsed.
I took a step closer.
“What did she change?””
Richard hesitated.
Ryan answered for him.
“She left Lily a trust worth nearly two million dollars.””
Emily gasped.
“What?””
I turned toward her.
“Mom never told me that.””
“She told me she had put aside money for Lily's education,” Emily said.
“She never mentioned two million dollars.””
Richard's expression remained carefully neutral.
“The trust was established to ensure Lily's long-term security.””
“Who controls it?”” I asked.
“An independent trustee.””
“Who?””
Richard said nothing.
Ryan laughed.
“Come on, Richard. You might as well tell them. The secret's already out.””
The lawyer shot him a furious look.
I felt something cold settle in my stomach.
“Who controls Lily's trust?””
Richard finally answered.
“Until Lily reaches adulthood, the trust is managed according to the provisions of your mother's will. Ryan was appointed as the child's primary guardian, with authority to make certain decisions regarding her financial interests.””
“And you were the attorney responsible for overseeing the arrangement?””
“I was one of the attorneys involved.””
I looked at the bank statement.
“Did any of the money from the trust go to Northstar Family Services?””
Richard's silence was immediate and damning.
Emily covered her mouth.
“Mom's money paid for my disappearance?””
“I did not say that,” Richard replied.
“You don't have to.””
She turned toward Lily, who was watching us with frightened eyes.
“Our mother wanted to protect you,” Emily whispered.
“She never wanted this.””
Ryan leaned forward.
“You don't know what your mother wanted.””
Emily faced him.
“Neither do you.””
“I knew her better than you think.””
“Then why did she change her will?””
Ryan's expression shifted.
For the first time, I saw something beyond anger in his eyes.
Fear.
He glanced at Richard.
The lawyer slowly closed his briefcase.
“I'm advising everyone to stop discussing these matters until the relevant documents can be reviewed privately.””
Officer Bennett shook her head.
“No. At this point, those documents may be relevant to an investigation. We will determine what needs to be preserved.””
Richard's voice became sharp.
“You cannot seize privileged communications simply because someone has made an allegation.””
“Then you can explain which documents are privileged and why.””
He said nothing.
Vanessa stepped closer to the table.
“I want to see the will.””
Richard turned toward her.
“You have no legal standing in this matter.””
“Perhaps not. But I was about to become Lily's adoptive mother because Ryan told me her biological mother was dead. I think I have a right to understand what I was being asked to do.””
Ryan stood.
“Vanessa, this is between me and my family.””
She looked at the wedding ring on the table.
“You made me part of it when you married me under false pretenses.””
Then she turned to me.
“James, I have a copy of something you should see.””
She opened her phone and scrolled through several messages.
“I took screenshots because Ryan asked me to sign a document before the wedding. He said it was a routine guardianship form, but I wanted my attorney to review it first.””
She showed me the screen.
The document's title read: *Temporary Guardianship and Financial Authorization.*
Beneath it was a paragraph authorizing Vanessa to make medical and educational decisions for Lily.
That seemed ordinary enough.
Then I read the final section.
It also granted her authority to manage certain trust distributions if Ryan became unavailable.
“Did you sign this?”” I asked.
“No,” Vanessa replied.
“I refused until my attorney reviewed it.””
Ryan's face darkened.
“You were supposed to sign it tomorrow.””
“Why?””
“Because I needed you to help me.””
“Help you do what?””
He looked at the officers, then at Richard.
Nobody answered for him.
I scrolled farther down the document and noticed the name of the witness who had certified the signatures.
Richard Cole.
But the date beside his signature was three weeks earlier.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you meet Richard three weeks ago?””
“No.””
I turned toward the lawyer.
“You certified a document Vanessa never signed?””
Richard's composure finally cracked.
“I prepared a draft. It was never executed.””
“Then why did you certify it?””
“I did not certify Vanessa's signature. I certified the document's preparation.””
“That's not what this says.””
He reached for the phone.
I pulled it away.
Officer Bennett examined the screen.
“Mr. Cole, we'll need a copy of this document.””
Richard's face had become ashen.
Ryan suddenly slammed his palm against the table.
“Enough!””
Lily began crying.
Emily wrapped her arms around her daughter.
“It's okay, sweetheart.””
Ryan stared at the child, then at the people surrounding him.
“You're all acting as if I'm some kind of criminal. Everything I've done has been for Lily.””
I looked him directly in the eye.
“Then why are you so afraid of letting her mother come home?””
He opened his mouth.
No answer came.
Officer Bennett escorted him toward the adjoining conference room. Richard followed under instructions to remain available.
Before disappearing through the door, Ryan turned back.
“James, when you read the original will, you'll understand why your mother made the choices she did.””
Then he was gone.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Emily held Lily tightly, rocking her gently while Vanessa stood beside them, looking at the documents scattered across the table.
I picked up the bank statement again.
Two million dollars.
A missing custody agreement.
A changed will.
And a payment made the day before our mother died.
My phone vibrated.
This time, the message came from an unknown email address.
There was no greeting, no explanation, only a scanned document attached to the message.
The filename read: *MARGARET_MITCHELL_FINAL_WILL.pdf*
I opened it.
The first page contained our mother's signature.
The second page listed the trust established for Lily.
But on the third page, beneath a clause titled Protective Beneficiary Conditions, I found a sentence that made my hands go numb.
If Emily Mitchell were ever confirmed alive, custody of Lily would not automatically return to her mother.
Instead, guardianship would pass to the person named in the sealed supplemental agreement.
I scrolled down to find the name.
Then I stopped breathing.
Our mother hadn't named Ryan.
She hadn't named Vanessa.
She hadn't named Richard Cole.
She had named me.
And beneath my name was a handwritten note in our mother's unmistakable script.
If James ever learns the truth, tell him what happened the night his sister disappeared.
I stared at the screen as Emily approached.
“James?”” she whispered.
“What is it?””
I turned the phone toward her.
She read the note once.
May you like
Then she looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
“James,” she said, her voice barely audible, “you were there that night.””
