Chapter 3: The Name Inside the Envelope

“Who did he pay?”” Vanessa demanded.

Her voice trembled, but she didn't look away from Emily.

Ryan grabbed for her wrist.

“Vanessa, we're leaving.””

She pulled free.

“Don't touch me.””

He stared at her as if he couldn't believe his new bride had refused him in front of his business partners, relatives, and friends.

“I'm trying to protect you,” he said.

“From your supposedly dead first wife?””

“She's lying!””

Emily placed the envelope on the nearest table.

“Then let's open it.””

Ryan moved toward the table, but the security guard blocked him again.

“Sir, stay where you are.””

“You work for me,” Ryan snapped.

“Not anymore, sir. The wedding coordinator told us to contact the police after what happened to the little girl.””

Ryan's mouth tightened.

Around us, guests began moving away from him. Some were whispering into their phones. Others watched with the tense fascination of people realizing that the wedding they had attended was becoming something they would remember for the rest of their lives.

I guided Lily toward a chair beside Emily.

“Sweetheart, sit with Mommy for a minute.””

Lily refused to release her mother's hand.

“Will Daddy make her leave again?””

Emily crouched beside her.

“No one is making me leave you today.””

“Promise?””

Emily kissed her forehead.

“I promise I'll do everything I can to stay.””

I hated that she couldn't promise more. I hated that three years of Ryan's lies had made even a simple reassurance sound uncertain.

But Emily was here now.

And this time, I had evidence.

I took the flash drive from my jacket and placed it beside the envelope.

Ryan stared at it.

“James, listen to me. You don't understand what you're involved in.””

“Then explain it.””

He lowered his voice.

“Whatever Emily told you, she's confused. She's been through something terrible. You should get her medical help instead of encouraging this.””

Emily stood.

“Don't you dare use my suffering against me.””

“I'm trying to help you.””

“You helped yourself.””

She opened the envelope.

Inside were photocopies of bank transfers, a printed email chain, a photograph of a white sedan, and a document bearing the letterhead of a private security company.

Vanessa leaned over the table.

“What am I looking at?””

“Payments,” I said.

“Three transfers from Ryan's company account to a man named Victor Hale. They began six days before Emily disappeared.””

Ryan shook his head violently.

“Those were legitimate business expenses.””

“Then why were they sent to a private investigator who specialized in locating people and arranging discreet relocations?””

His silence lasted just long enough.

Vanessa picked up one of the pages.

“Victor Hale,” she read.

“Who is he?””

Emily answered.

“The man who took me away from my home.””

Ryan's face tightened.

“You left voluntarily.””

“No.””

“You were unhappy. You wanted a divorce.””

“I wanted you to stop threatening me.””

Lily looked up from her chair.

“Daddy threatened Mommy?””

Ryan turned sharply toward her.

“Lily, don't listen to this.””

Emily immediately stepped between them.

“Don't speak to her like that.””

Ryan's eyes flashed.

“She's my daughter!””

“And she is not your shield.””

He looked around the ballroom, searching for someone willing to support him. His business partner, Daniel Brooks, stood near the bar with his arms folded. Ryan's mother had moved beside an older couple, her hand pressed against her mouth.

Nobody came to his defense.

I pulled one of the documents closer to Vanessa.

“Look at the date. This transfer was made two days before Ryan told us Emily had died.””

Vanessa examined the page.

“But if she was already dead—”

“She wasn't,” I said.

“And the money didn't go to a funeral home.””

Emily's hands began to shake.

I covered them with mine.

“You don't have to tell everything right now.””

“Yes, I do.”” She took a slow breath.

“I've spent three years being afraid of what he would do if I spoke. I'm done being afraid.””

She turned toward the guests.

“Ryan told everyone I died in a car accident. There was no accident. He arranged for Victor Hale to take me out of Texas and leave me somewhere I couldn't contact my family. I was told that if I tried to return, Lily would be taken away from me forever.””

A woman near the back gasped.

Ryan laughed harshly.

“That's an incredible story. Do you have any proof?””

Emily pointed at the photograph.

“That's Victor's car.””

“Anyone could have taken that picture.””

“Then explain the email.””

Ryan stopped smiling.

I unfolded the printed page and read the subject line aloud.

*Subject: Final Arrangements — E. Mitchell*

The email was dated three years earlier.

The sender was an account registered to Ryan's company. The recipient was Victor Hale.

The message contained only a few lines, but the final sentence made Vanessa cover her mouth.

The family must believe she is gone. Do not allow her to contact the child or James.

Ryan reached for the page.

I pulled it away.

“Don't.””

“It's fabricated!””

“Then you won't mind the police examining it.””

At the word police, Ryan's gaze darted toward the entrance.

Emily saw it.

“So you do remember,” she whispered.

He said nothing.

Vanessa slowly removed her wedding ring.

Ryan stared at her hand.

“What are you doing?””

“I don't know who you are,” she replied.

“I don't know what else you've lied about, and I don't know whether I can ever believe anything you've told me.””

“Vanessa, don't be ridiculous. We just got married.””

She placed the ring on the table beside the envelope.

“That doesn't mean I have to spend the rest of my life defending you.””

For the first time, Ryan looked genuinely alone.

Then the ballroom doors opened again.

Two uniformed police officers entered, followed by the wedding coordinator. One officer approached the security guard while the other looked toward Lily.

“Who called us about an assault involving a child?””

Several guests raised their hands.

Ryan took a step backward.

Emily squeezed Lily's hand and looked at me.

“James, there's something else you need to know.””

I turned toward her.

“What is it?””

She glanced at the officers, then back at the documents.

“The money Ryan paid Victor wasn't just for hiding me.””

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

“It was also meant to pay someone inside our own family.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

May you like

Because there was only one person Ryan had trusted enough to know where Emily was being taken.

And that person's signature was on the final page of the envelope.
