Chapter 11: The Recording That Changed Everything

I spent the next hour trying to remember the kitchen.

Ryan's house had always been immaculate. Dark wood cabinets, granite countertops, expensive appliances that looked untouched. Emily used to joke that the place felt more like a hotel than a home.

That night, I'd sat at the kitchen island while Ryan poured two drinks.

I'd refused the whiskey.

Or at least, I thought I had.

My memories came in fragments: the ticking wall clock, the smell of lemon cleaner, Ryan's hand resting on a stack of papers.

Then nothing.

“James?””

Emily's voice pulled me back.

She was standing beside the table with her phone in her hand.

“I've received something.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“A message from the same investigator who helped me in New Mexico. Her name is Claire Bennett. She says she found an old recording connected to Victor Hale.””

“Can you play it?””

Emily nodded.

She pressed the screen, and a man's voice emerged from the speaker.

Ryan's.

“If James asks questions, tell him Emily left voluntarily. He'll believe me eventually.””

Another voice answered.

Richard.

“And if he doesn't?””

“Then we remind him what happened that night.””

I felt my stomach drop.

The recording continued.

Richard's voice was calm and measured.

“His signature is already on the authorization. If he decides to make trouble, the document will establish that he agreed to the arrangement.””

Ryan gave a short laugh.

“James won't remember signing anything.””

The recording ended.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Emily sat beside me.

“They used you.””

I stared at the phone.

“Or they made it look like they did.””

The distinction mattered. If Ryan had forged my signature or obtained it under false pretenses, the document might prove nothing about what I intended.

But I still needed to know why my memory had failed.

“Can Claire send the original recording to the police?”” I asked.

“She says she's already contacted Officer Bennett.””

I exhaled slowly.

“Good.””

Then I noticed something else.

The recording contained a faint sound in the background. A woman's voice, muffled but recognizable.

I leaned closer.

“Play that again.””

Emily replayed it.

This time, I heard the woman clearly.

“Ryan, you promised he wouldn't be involved.””

My blood turned cold.

It was our mother.

Emily pressed a hand against her mouth.

“That's Mom.””

Ryan's voice answered.

“He's already involved. There's no point pretending otherwise.””

“But he's your brother-in-law. He's Lily's uncle.””

“And if he tells anyone what happened, he'll lose everything.””

Our mother's voice trembled.

“Then perhaps we should tell him the truth.””

Ryan's reply was immediate.

“Absolutely not.””

The recording stopped.

Emily looked at me.

“Mom knew.””

I couldn't answer.

Our mother had known something terrible was happening. She had tried to intervene, but she'd been frightened into silence.

And somehow, Ryan had convinced her that keeping the secret was the only way to protect us.

I pressed my palms against my eyes.

“I should have known.””

Emily reached for my shoulder.

“You were manipulated, too.””

“But I was there.””

“You don't know what happened yet.””

Before I could respond, Officer Bennett approached with a second officer.

“We've received the recording,” she said.

“We'll need to establish its authenticity, but it gives us a reason to investigate the authorization Ryan mentioned.””

“Can you examine the USB drive?”” I asked.

“We've sent it for a preliminary review.””

“Do you know what's on it?””

“Not yet.””

She paused.

“However, we've confirmed that your signature appears on a document relating to Emily's relocation.””

My chest tightened.

“Was it forged?””

“We can't determine that without further examination.””

Emily stood.

“Officer, the recording suggests he deliberately prevented James from remembering what happened.””

“We're looking into that possibility.””

“What about Ryan?””

“He's not free to leave until we've completed our initial interviews. We may need additional evidence before determining whether further action is appropriate.””

I nodded, trying to absorb everything.

Then the officer looked at me.

“There's another issue. The company that received the payments from Ryan's business is registered to a person named Michael Grant. Do you recognize that name?””

I shook my head.

Emily's expression changed.

“Michael Grant?””

The officer turned toward her.

“You know him?””

Emily swallowed.

“He was the man who drove me away from Texas.””

I stared at her.

“You said his name was Victor Hale.””

“Victor arranged everything. Michael was the driver.””

Officer Bennett made a note.

“Do you know where Michael Grant is now?””

“No,” Emily said.

“But I remember something about him.””

“What?””

“He had a tattoo on his left hand. A black compass with a broken needle.””

I looked down at the evidence bag containing the USB drive.

A memory surfaced.

Ryan standing in the kitchen, holding a phone toward me.

A photograph on the screen.

A man's hand resting on a steering wheel.

A black compass tattoo.

I stood so abruptly that my chair scraped across the floor.

“I've seen him.””

Officer Bennett's attention sharpened.

“Where?””

“On Ryan's phone. That night. He showed me a picture of the driver.””

“What did he say?””

I struggled to remember.

“He said the man would take Emily somewhere safe. He said it was temporary. He told me she needed time away from the marriage.””

Emily stared at me.

“And you believed him?””

“I think I did.””

My voice cracked.

“I think he made me believe he was helping you.””

Officer Bennett nodded slowly.

“That's something we'll need to examine carefully.””

Then her partner approached, carrying a printed report.

“There's a problem,” he said quietly.

Officer Bennett read the page.

Her expression changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She looked up.

“The preliminary examination of the USB drive found a video file dated the night Emily disappeared.””

My heart pounded.

“What does it show?””

She hesitated.

“It's a recording from Ryan's kitchen.””

Emily gripped my arm.

“Can we see it?””

Officer Bennett shook her head.

“Not here. The file needs to be preserved and reviewed properly.””

Then she looked directly at me.

“Mr. Mitchell, the video appears to show you signing the authorization document.””

I felt the room spin.

“That's impossible.””

“The recording also captures a conversation immediately afterward.””

“What conversation?””

May you like

The officer's expression hardened.

“Ryan tells someone to make sure you don't remember the evening.””
