Chapter 9: The Family Secret Sarah Took To Her Grave

I couldn’t breathe.

“My wife’s brother?””

Mark nodded.

“Andrew.””

I sat back.

The name felt impossible.

Sarah’s younger brother.

The man who gave the speech at our wedding.

The man who held Emily after Sarah’s funeral.

The man who told me, “You’re her father now. Protect her.””

I remembered those words.

Now they felt different.

Like a lie.

“No.””

Mark slid the documents across the table.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I pushed them away.

“There has to be another explanation.””

“There might be.””

“Then find it.””

“I’m trying.””

I grabbed the papers.

The evidence was clear.

Payments from Rebecca’s account.

Messages between Rebecca and Andrew.

Discussions about Emily.

Discussions about me.

One message stopped me.

Rebecca wrote:

“He trusts you. Use that.””

Andrew replied:

“He always has.””

I stared at the screen.

My own family.

My own memories.

Everything felt poisoned.

When I got home, Emily ran toward me.

“Daddy!””

I caught her.

For a moment, I forgot everything.

Then I looked at her face.

And I made a decision.

Whatever secrets existed.

Whatever adults had done.

She would not carry the weight of them.

“Hey,” I whispered.

“Did we win?””

I smiled.

“We’re safe.””

She hugged me.

“I knew you would protect me.””

That sentence stayed with me all night.

Because I almost failed.

I almost married someone who wanted to erase her.

The next day, I drove to Andrew’s house.

I didn’t tell Mark.

I didn’t tell anyone.

I needed to hear it from him.

The door opened after three knocks.

Andrew smiled.

“Daniel?””

Then he saw my face.

The smile disappeared.

“What happened?””

I held up my phone.

The message thread was visible.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“Where did you get that?””

Not “What is that?””

Not “This isn’t true.””

Just:

Where did you get that?

I stepped inside.

“Why?””

Andrew looked away.

“Daniel…”

“Why did you help her?””

Silence.

Then he closed the door.

“I was trying to protect Emily.””

I laughed.

“By helping someone take her away?””

“You don’t understand.””

“No. I don’t.””

His jaw tightened.

“Sarah understood.””

The room went quiet.

I froze.

“What did you say?””

Andrew looked toward the window.

“Sarah knew.””

“Knew what?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“What did my wife know?””

Andrew’s face changed.

Regret.

Fear.

Something else.

“Sarah found out about Rebecca before you did.””

My heart stopped.

“Rebecca?””

Andrew nodded.

“She knew Rebecca wasn’t who she claimed to be.””

I felt the room spinning.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Andrew reached into a drawer.

He pulled out a small box.

“I was supposed to give you this if Rebecca ever got close to Emily.””

My hands shook.

“What is it?””

Andrew opened the box.

Inside was another letter.

Another one from Sarah.

But this one was different.

Because the envelope had a warning written across the front.

A warning in Sarah’s handwriting.

“Daniel, if you are reading this, I failed to protect you.””

I looked at Andrew.

“What happened?””

He looked down.

“She discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

Andrew whispered:

“The woman you almost married wasn’t the first person trying to take Emily away.””

I opened the letter.

May you like

And the first sentence made my blood turn cold.

“Daniel, the person you trust most is the reason I became afraid for our daughter.””
