Chapter 14: The Memory Emily Kept
I didn’t sleep after Emily told me.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I finally understood.
Everyone had been searching for evidence.
Documents.
Emails.
Recordings.
But the one person who knew the truth had been beside me the entire time.
My daughter.
The next morning, I sat with Emily at the kitchen table.
No pressure.
No questions that would scare her.
Just patience.
“Sweetheart,” I said softly, “do you remember when Mommy was sick?””
She nodded.
“A little.””
“Do you remember anyone visiting?””
She looked at her cereal.
“Sometimes.””
“Who?””
She was quiet.
Then:
“Grandma.””
My heart tightened.
“Anyone else?””
Emily frowned.
“There was another lady.””
Rebecca.
The thought came immediately.
But I didn’t say the name.
“What did she look like?””
Emily thought.
“Pretty.””
My stomach turned.
“Did she have dark hair?””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
Rebecca.
But how?
“Did you know her?””
Emily shook her head.
“She gave Mommy something.””
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
She looked frustrated.
“I was hiding.””
“Hiding?””
Emily nodded.
“Mommy told me to stay behind the door.””
My blood ran cold.
“Why?””
“Because she sounded scared.””
I held her hand.
“What happened next?””
Emily closed her eyes.
“I heard yelling.””
“What did they say?””
She was silent for a long time.
Then she whispered:
“Mommy said, ‘You won’t take my daughter.’”
I stopped breathing.
“And the woman said?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“She said, ‘You don’t understand. I’m not taking her from you. I’m taking her from him.’”
Him.
Me.
I felt sick.
Emily continued.
“Then Grandma came.””
I looked away.
“And?””
“They were all quiet.””
The room went silent.
“Then Mommy hugged me.””
Emily wiped her eyes.
“She told me she loved me.””
I pulled her close.
“Did Mommy seem scared?””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
The answer destroyed me.
Because Sarah wasn’t careless.
She wasn’t imagining things.
She was protecting us.
That afternoon, Mark helped me reopen everything.
Not as a custody dispute.
As a criminal investigation.
The evidence was finally connecting.
Rebecca.
My mother.
The missing documents.
The secret meetings.
The old photo.
Then Mark found something.
A property record.
A house Rebecca’s sister owned.
The same address from Emily’s suitcase.
“She wasn’t planning a temporary stay,” Mark said.
I looked at the papers.
“She was preparing a place.””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
Mark looked at me.
“Indefinitely.””
I closed my eyes.
The wedding wasn’t the beginning.
It was the final step.
Rebecca had spent years building toward one goal.
Removing Emily.
Removing me.
That evening, I received a call.
From Rebecca.
I almost ignored it.
But I answered.
“What do you want?””
Her voice was different.
No anger.
No confidence.
Fear.
“Daniel, we need to talk.””
“Why?””
“Because you’re looking for answers in the wrong places.””
I said nothing.
She continued.
“Your mother will tell you anything to protect herself.””
“You worked with her.””
A pause.
Then:
“She worked with me.””
The honesty shocked me.
“What?””
“I didn’t want things to go this far.””
“You planned to take my daughter.””
“I planned to protect myself.””
“From what?””
Silence.
Then Rebecca whispered:
“From Sarah.””
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?””
“She knew too much.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Did you hurt my wife?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“But someone did.””
“Who?””
Rebecca started crying.
“Daniel, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Another pause.
Then she said:
“The person who killed Sarah is the person who has been pretending to help you.””
My blood turned cold.
“Who?””
Rebecca whispered:
“Look at Claire’s phone records.””
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
Claire.
Again.
Everyone had betrayed me.
But one question remained.
May you like
Was Claire truly helping me now?
Or was she still hiding the biggest secret of all?
