Chapter 2: The Suitcase Behind The Altar
For five seconds, nobody moved.
The guests looked confused.
Rebecca looked furious.
And Emily held onto me like she was afraid someone would take her away.
“Claire,” Rebecca said sharply.
“What are you doing?””
Claire stopped in the middle of the aisle.
Her eyes were red from crying.
“I’m sorry, Daniel.””
I looked at the suitcase.
“What is that?””
Claire swallowed.
“It’s Emily’s.””
A wave of whispers moved through the chapel.
Rebecca immediately stepped forward.
“Claire, don’t do this.””
“Don’t do what?”” I asked.
Rebecca turned toward the guests and forced a smile.
“This is a family misunderstanding.””
But Claire shook her head.
“No, it isn’t.””
That sentence changed the entire room.
Claire had always been gentle. She avoided conflict. She was the kind of person who apologized when someone else bumped into her.
Seeing her stand there trembling told me something was very wrong.
I carried Emily closer.
“Claire, tell me what happened.””
She looked at Rebecca.
Then at me.
“Rebecca asked me to pack Emily’s things this morning.””
My chest tightened.
“She asked you?””
Claire nodded.
“She said Emily would be staying with her sister after the ceremony.””
Rebecca crossed her arms.
“Because we discussed this.””
I stared at her.
“We did?””
Rebecca’s jaw tightened.
“Daniel, you know how difficult it has been. Emily needs structure. She needs someone who can handle her.””
Emily looked down.
The words hurt her.
I felt her fingers curl into my jacket.
“Don’t talk about my daughter like she’s a problem.””
Rebecca sighed.
“You’re making this emotional.””
“No,” I said.
“You planned this behind my back.””
The room became painfully quiet.
Claire slowly opened the suitcase.
Inside were Emily’s clothes.
Her school books.
Her favorite stuffed rabbit.
Her allergy medication.
And the framed picture of Sarah.
Emily’s mother.
My hands went cold.
Rebecca knew that picture mattered.
She knew Emily slept with it beside her bed every night.
Claire reached inside and pulled out a manila envelope.
“I found this under the clothes.””
Rebecca’s face changed.
“Claire.””
It was the first time I heard fear in her voice.
Claire handed me the envelope.
“Please open it.””
I opened it.
The first page had Emily’s full name.
The second page had my signature.
Except it wasn’t my signature.
I knew my own handwriting.
This was a copy.
A fake.
I looked at Rebecca.
“What is this?””
She said nothing.
“Rebecca.””
Her expression hardened.
“You don’t understand what you’re seeing.””
“Then explain it.””
She looked around at the guests.
“This isn’t the place.””
I almost laughed.
The woman who wanted to secretly send my daughter away was worried about the location.
I read the document again.
It was an authorization form.
A temporary guardianship agreement.
It gave Rebecca’s sister permission to make decisions regarding Emily’s care.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
At the bottom of the page was a section titled:
“Permanent Residential Arrangement.””
My eyes stopped.
I felt sick.
“She was going to keep her there.””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Rebecca.
“You were going to send my daughter away permanently?””
Her face turned pale.
“That’s not what it means.””
“Then what does it mean?””
She stepped closer.
“Daniel, listen to me. I love you.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“You’re choosing a child over your future wife?””
The entire chapel heard it.
And I think everyone understood the truth at that moment.
Because a mother wouldn’t say that.
A partner wouldn’t say that.
Only someone who wanted me to choose would say that.
Emily whispered, “Daddy?””
I looked down.
“I’m here.””
She pointed toward the envelope.
“Why did Rebecca write my name on that?””
I didn’t have an answer.
The truth was, I didn’t know how far Rebecca had planned to go.
I thought I knew the woman I was about to marry.
I was wrong.
I turned back to Claire.
“Where did you get this?””
Claire hesitated.
Then she reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.
“There’s something else you need to see.””
She pressed play.
A recording started.
May you like
And the first voice I heard was Rebecca’s.
“Once Daniel says his vows, it will be too late for him to stop me.””
