Chapter 7: The Person Behind The Betrayal

The email sat on my screen like a loaded weapon.

“Once I legally become his wife, removing Emily will be much easier.””

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

My mind refused to accept it.

Claire.

The woman who had helped Emily with homework.

The woman who stayed with her when she had nightmares.

The woman who cried in the chapel when she revealed Rebecca’s plan.

How could she be part of it?

I stared at the name attached to the email thread.

Claire Thompson.

Recipient.

Rebecca Miller.

Date.

Six weeks before my wedding.

My hands went cold.

I grabbed my phone and called Mark.

He answered after the second ring.

“Daniel?””

“I found something.””

His voice immediately changed.

“What kind of something?””

I sent him screenshots.

Thirty seconds passed.

Then a minute.

Finally, he said, “Where did you get this?””

“It was in an old backup.””

“Do not delete anything.””

“I’m not.””

“Do not confront Claire yet.””

I looked toward the hallway.

Claire’s room was downstairs.

“She betrayed my daughter.””

“I understand how you feel.””

“No, Mark. I trusted her.””

“I know. That’s why you have to be careful.””

I hated that he was right.

Anger wanted me to walk downstairs and demand answers.

But this wasn’t just about revenge.

It was about Emily.

If Claire had helped Rebecca, I needed proof.

I needed everything.

The next morning, I watched Claire make breakfast for Emily.

The scene looked normal.

Almost painfully normal.

Emily sat at the table coloring while Claire cut strawberries into small pieces.

“More pancakes?”” Claire asked.

Emily smiled faintly.

“Please.””

I stood in the doorway.

Claire looked up.

Her smile faded.

“Daniel?””

“Can we talk?””

She immediately knew.

That scared me.

“About what?””

I placed my phone on the counter.

The email was open.

Claire looked at it.

Her face changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“Explain.””

She looked at Emily.

“Not here.””

“Why? Because she deserves to know?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, please.””

Emily looked between us.

“Is Claire in trouble?””

I forced my voice to stay calm.

“No, sweetheart. Go upstairs for a minute.””

Emily hesitated.

Then she walked away.

The moment she disappeared, I turned back.

“How long?””

Claire sat down slowly.

“Daniel…”

“How long were you helping Rebecca?””

She covered her face.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt Emily.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

She cried quietly.

“Three months.””

The answer felt like a punch.

Three months.

While I was planning a wedding.

While Emily trusted her.

Three months.

“What did you do?””

Claire wiped her cheeks.

“I gave Rebecca information.””

“What information?””

“About your schedule. About Emily’s routine. About what bothered you.””

I stared at her.

“You helped her build a case.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire looked down.

“Because Rebecca promised she would help me.””

“With what?””

“My son.””

I froze.

Claire had a son.

A college student who lived in another state.

“What does your son have to do with this?””

“She said she knew people who could help him get a scholarship.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So she bought your loyalty.””

Claire shook her head.

“I realized too late.””

“When?””

“When she told me to pack Emily’s suitcase.””

Her voice broke.

“That was the moment I knew she wasn’t trying to help. She wanted Emily gone.””

I looked away.

Part of me wanted to forgive her.

But another part remembered Emily standing in the chapel, terrified.

“You let my daughter believe she was unwanted.””

Claire cried harder.

“I know.””

The silence between us was unbearable.

Then she reached into her purse.

“I have something.””

She pulled out a small flash drive.

“I saved copies of everything.””

I didn’t take it immediately.

“Why?””

“Because I knew Rebecca would deny everything.””

I picked it up.

“What’s on this?””

“Messages. Documents. Recordings.””

My phone buzzed.

A message from Mark.

“Daniel, I checked the email metadata. The account Rebecca used wasn’t personal.””

I looked down.

Another message followed.

“It belonged to a law office.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Claire.

“Which law office?””

She swallowed.

“The one she works with.””

“What?””

Claire whispered:

May you like

“Rebecca wasn’t just planning to remove Emily.””

“She was preparing to take custody of her.””
