Chapter 7: The Attorney Who Helped My Father Disappear
The room went silent.
Not the kind of silence that happens when people run out of words.
The kind that happens when everyone realizes the truth they are about to hear might change everything.
Daniel Cross stood beside the reception table, his briefcase open, his expression heavy.
He looked older than the man in the photograph.
Older than the attorney who had helped my father build his company.
But his eyes were the same.
The eyes of someone carrying a secret for far too long.
"You helped my father disappear?"" I repeated.
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
My hands tightened into fists.
"Then why am I standing here believing my father died?""
He looked at my mother.
Then Vanessa.
Then back at me.
"Because that was what your father wanted everyone to believe.""
I stared at him.
"No.""
The word came out before I could stop it.
"No, my father died.""
Daniel didn't argue.
Instead, he reached into the briefcase and placed another photograph on the table.
It was my father.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
The date was printed in the corner.
Two months after his supposed death.
My legs felt weak.
"Where was he?""
Daniel took a breath.
"Hidden.""
"From who?""
His eyes moved toward the windows.
"From the people who wanted him gone.""
My mother stepped forward.
"Daniel, stop speaking in riddles.""
His expression softened.
"I wish I could.""
"Then tell Marcus the truth.""
Daniel looked at her.
"The truth is exactly what your husband was trying to protect him from.""
I looked between them.
"Everyone keeps talking about protecting me.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Nobody actually tells me anything.""
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"You're right.""
For the first time all night, someone admitted it.
"I owe you the truth.""
He opened the folder.
Inside were bank records.
Company documents.
Photographs.
And reports.
My father's investigation.
"Your father discovered someone inside his company was stealing money.""
I nodded.
"I know.""
"No.""
Daniel shook his head.
"You know the beginning.""
He placed a document in front of me.
"The amount missing wasn't millions.""
My eyes scanned the page.
Then froze.
"$18 million?""
Daniel nodded.
"Your father spent years tracing where it went.""
My mother whispered:
"And he found them.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Yes.""
"Who?""
He didn't answer immediately.
That worried me.
Then he said:
"The person closest to him.""
I looked at my mother.
She looked away.
My chest tightened.
"Are you saying my mother did this?""
Daniel shook his head.
"No.""
I exhaled.
But then he continued.
"Your father suspected everyone.""
Everyone went quiet.
"He believed the person responsible was using your mother's name as a shield.""
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face changed.
Because she knew something.
"Your father discovered Vanessa's mother was involved.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"I know.""
Daniel looked surprised.
"You knew?""
She nodded.
"My mother confessed before she died.""
I stared at her.
"What exactly did she confess?""
Vanessa's voice trembled.
"She said she helped move the money.""
"And?""
"She said someone forced her.""
"Who?""
She looked at Daniel.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Daniel answered.
"Your father's business partner.""
I frowned.
"My father never had a partner.""
Daniel gave a sad smile.
"That's what everyone thought.""
He pulled out another document.
A signed agreement.
My father's signature.
And another name.
I read it.
Then my heart stopped.
"Richard Mitchell.""
Vanessa's father.
Her eyes widened.
"My father?""
Daniel nodded.
"Your father and Richard built the company together.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
She looked ashamed.
"Because I thought you would hate me.""
I wanted to say I wouldn't.
But I couldn't.
Not anymore.
Daniel continued.
"Richard wasn't just stealing money. He was planning to take control of the entire company.""
"And my father found out.""
"Yes.""
"What happened next?""
Daniel looked at the photograph.
"The night your father disappeared, he arranged a meeting at the hotel.""
"The meeting with Vanessa's mother.""
Daniel nodded.
"She wanted to confess.""
Vanessa whispered:
"She told me that.""
I turned.
"You were there?""
She nodded.
"My mother called me because she was scared.""
"Why?""
"Because she knew something bad was going to happen.""
Daniel's face darkened.
"She was right.""
The room seemed colder.
"What happened?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Your father survived the first attempt.""
I froze.
"The first attempt?""
My mother covered her mouth.
Daniel nodded.
"Someone tried to kill him.""
I felt sick.
"Who?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he opened one final file.
Inside was a police report.
A witness statement.
A name.
I read it.
Then looked up.
"No.""
Daniel's expression didn't change.
"Yes.""
My hands started shaking.
Because the witness had identified the person who was at the hotel that night.
The person who attacked my father.
The person who knew he survived.
The person who had spent eight years pretending he was dead.
Daniel said quietly:
"Marcus, your father wasn't killed by a stranger.""
May you like
He pointed at the report.
"He was betrayed by someone you trusted.""
