Chapter 3: The Name Written in My Father’s Investigation

The wedding ended before it officially began.

Guests left quietly.

The flowers remained untouched.

The cake sat beneath the lights, perfect and meaningless.

The place where Vanessa and I were supposed to say our vows became the place where my entire life fell apart.

I stayed behind with my mother.

Vanessa stood near the entrance.

Alone.

For the first time since I met her, she looked small.

But I couldn't tell if it was guilt or fear.

"Marcus," she whispered.

I didn't look at her.

"Don't.""

She stopped.

My mother sat in a chair nearby, holding the bracelet my father had left behind.

The same bracelet Vanessa had tried to destroy.

I finally understood something.

My mother wasn't protecting an object.

She was protecting my father's final message.

"Mom," I said, "tell me everything.""

She looked exhausted.

"Your father was investigating something before he died.""

"What?""

"The Mitchell family.""

Vanessa immediately spoke.

"That's a lie.""

I turned toward her.

"Then why are you scared?""

She froze.

Because she knew.

She knew too much.

My mother opened the letter again.

"There are pages missing.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Your father wrote more than this.""

She showed me the paper.

The letter ended abruptly.

Like someone had removed part of it.

"Who had access to this?""

My mother looked at Vanessa.

Nobody said anything.

Then Charlotte stepped forward.

"I know.""

Vanessa's head snapped around.

"Charlotte.""

"I have to.""

Charlotte looked at me.

"Vanessa found your father's records months before you proposed.""

I stared.

"How?""

"Her mother kept files.""

"What kind of files?""

Charlotte hesitated.

"Files about your father.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Stop.""

"No," Charlotte said.

"He deserves the truth.""

I walked toward Vanessa.

"Your mother knew my father?""

She didn't answer.

"Vanessa.""

Finally, she whispered:

"Yes.""

The word felt like a knife.

"How?""

She looked down.

"My mother worked with him.""

"Worked with him doing what?""

Silence.

Then she said:

"Business.""

My mother shook her head.

"No.""

Everyone looked at her.

"Your mother wasn't just your father's business partner.""

Vanessa's face changed.

My mother continued.

"She was the person he was investigating.""

The room went completely silent.

I felt dizzy.

"Why?""

My mother looked at the photograph.

"Because your father discovered money was being moved from his company.""

My eyes widened.

"Stolen?""

She nodded.

"Millions.""

Vanessa immediately said:

"My mother was innocent.""

But she said it too quickly.

Like she had practiced it.

I picked up the photograph again.

My father standing beside Vanessa's mother.

The hotel behind them.

The date.

June 14, 2002.

"The day everything changed.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"What happened that day?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know.""

"You're lying.""

She flinched.

That hurt.

Because I had never spoken to her that way before.

A security guard approached from outside.

"Mr. Hayes?""

I turned.

"Yes?""

He handed me an envelope.

"This was left at the front gate.""

My name was written on the front.

In handwriting I recognized.

My father's handwriting.

My fingers went numb.

"Where did this come from?""

The guard shook his head.

"A woman dropped it off.""

"What woman?""

He hesitated.

"She said she was someone your father trusted.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

One sentence.

"If Vanessa Mitchell is standing beside you when you read this, do not trust anything she says.""

I looked up.

Vanessa was crying.

"Marcus...""

I held the paper tighter.

Then I saw something else inside the envelope.

A second photograph.

This one was newer.

Only three years old.

It showed Vanessa.

Standing beside my father.

But that was impossible.

My father had been dead for eight years.

My heart stopped.

I flipped the photograph over.

There was a date written on the back.

And below it, five words.

"The night before he died.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She covered her mouth.

Because she knew exactly what I had found.

May you like

And then she whispered the sentence that changed everything.

"Marcus... your father wasn't dead when I met him.""
