Chapter 14: The Truth Hidden at the Hotel

Nobody moved.

Ethan stood in the doorway.

The same man who had given a speech at my wedding.

The same man who had joked with me two hours earlier.

The same man who knew every fear, every dream, every weakness I had.

Now he was pointing a gun at us.

"Marcus.""

His voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

That made it worse.

I stared at him.

"Why?""

He looked hurt.

As if I was the one who betrayed him.

"You really don't understand.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"I don't.""

Ethan lowered the gun slightly.

"Your father ruined everything.""

My father's expression hardened.

"You don't know what you're talking about.""

Ethan laughed.

"You always said that.""

He looked at me.

"Do you know what it was like growing up knowing your father chose another family?""

I froze.

This wasn't about money.

This was about pain.

Ethan looked at my father.

"You had a perfect son.""

My father whispered:

"I lost you.""

"No.""

Ethan's eyes filled with anger.

"You abandoned me.""

The room became quiet.

For the first time, I saw something human in him.

Not the villain.

The wounded person underneath.

But then I remembered the gun.

The lies.

The years of manipulation.

"You used me.""

He looked at me.

"I needed access.""

The honesty hurt.

"You became my friend because of my family.""

"At first.""

The words cut deeper.

"At first?""

Ethan looked away.

"Then you became my brother.""

Nobody spoke.

I almost believed him.

Almost.

Then Daniel said:

"Where are the files, Alexander?""

Ethan looked at him.

"You always knew.""

Daniel nodded.

"I suspected.""

Ethan smiled.

"Everyone suspected.""

He looked at me.

"But nobody ever asked why.""

I stepped forward.

"Why?""

Ethan looked at my father.

"Because your father destroyed my family before he destroyed mine.""

My father shook his head.

"That's not true.""

"Isn't it?""

Ethan pulled a document from his pocket.

He threw it onto the table.

I picked it up.

It was a report.

A company investigation.

My father's signature.

And a section about Ethan's mother.

I read it.

Then looked at my father.

"What is this?""

My father looked devastated.

"I was trying to protect him.""

"From what?""

He didn't answer.

Ethan did.

"From knowing his mother was involved.""

I looked at Ethan.

"Your mother stole from my father?""

He nodded.

"But she was forced.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Like my mother.""

Ethan looked at her.

"Exactly.""

Everything connected.

The missing money.

The secrets.

The lies.

Everyone had been trapped by someone else's choices.

My father looked at Ethan.

"Where is the original file?""

Ethan smiled.

"You still don't understand.""

"What?""

"The file doesn't expose one person.""

He looked around the room.

"It exposes everyone.""

My heart sank.

"What does that mean?""

Ethan walked toward the table.

"The money wasn't stolen.""

Everyone froze.

"What?""

"It was moved.""

"Where?""

He looked at me.

"Into a trust.""

The room went silent.

The same trust.

The $3.5 million.

My father's inheritance.

My father's condition.

"No.""

Ethan nodded.

"Your grandfather created it after discovering the truth.""

Daniel whispered:

"He knew.""

Ethan continued.

"The trust wasn't meant to protect money.""

"Then what was it for?""

Ethan looked at me.

"To reveal the person responsible.""

My father closed his eyes.

"That's why he created the condition.""

"No Mitchell family member.""

Ethan nodded.

"Because he believed the Mitchells were involved.""

Vanessa looked devastated.

"But my mother...""

"Was a victim.""

Ethan looked at her.

"Like mine.""

Then he turned toward my father.

"But there was one person your grandfather never suspected.""

I looked at him.

"Who?""

Ethan smiled sadly.

"The person who controlled everyone.""

My father suddenly looked terrified.

"Alexander.""

Too late.

Ethan pulled another paper from his jacket.

A final page.

"The signature is here.""

He placed it on the table.

I looked down.

And my entire body went cold.

Because the signature wasn't my father's.

It wasn't Robert's.

It wasn't Richard Mitchell's.

It belonged to someone else.

May you like

Someone who had been beside me the entire night.

My mother.
