Chapter 9: The Eight-Million-Dollar Betrayal

I stared at the authorization form.

Eight million dollars.

My signature.

Ryan's name.

A distribution that was supposed to support the charitable projects my grandmother had spent her final years funding.

I felt something inside me break.

"They're trying to steal Grandma's money.""

Margaret nodded.

"Yes. And if the transfer is processed tomorrow, recovering it could become considerably more complicated.""

Dad immediately reached for his phone.

"Contact the trustees. Freeze the distribution.""

Margaret shook her head.

"Unfortunately, the request was submitted through the fund's authorized portal. We need to establish that the signature was forged before the trustees can permanently reject it.""

"Then establish it," Dad replied.

I looked at the form.

"Can I speak to the trustees myself?""

Margaret nodded.

"Of course. You're the primary beneficiary.""

"Then arrange the meeting.""

Within an hour, we were sitting in a private conference room at the Bennett Foundation.

Three trustees joined by video call.

The chairman, Harold Mitchell, appeared first.

"Maya, it's been a long time.""

I forced a smile.

"Hello, Mr. Mitchell.""

He looked concerned.

"Margaret tells us there's a dispute regarding the upcoming distribution.""

"There is. I never authorized the transfer to Whitmore Holdings.""

Harold adjusted his glasses.

"That's concerning. The authorization came through your account.""

"I know. But I didn't submit it.""

One of the other trustees, Eleanor Price, leaned toward her camera.

"Can you confirm whether Ryan Whitmore has ever been authorized to act on your behalf?""

"No.""

"Have you given him access to your trust documents?""

"No.""

Harold exchanged a glance with the others.

"Then we'll need to investigate immediately.""

I leaned forward.

"Please understand something. That money was supposed to fund housing programs, scholarships, and community services. My grandmother didn't leave it to finance a failing real estate company.""

Eleanor nodded.

"Your grandmother would have wanted the fund protected.""

Then Harold said something unexpected.

"There's another reason we need to be careful, Maya.""

"What?""

He opened a document.

"The Whitmore company has already submitted a claim against the fund. They argue that a portion of the original partnership assets belongs to them.""

Margaret stiffened.

"On what basis?""

Harold displayed an old agreement.

"The document was submitted yesterday by their attorney.""

I recognized Charles's signature.

The agreement claimed that Charles held a controlling interest in several properties.

But Grandmother's original documents said otherwise.

Margaret immediately requested a copy.

"That's a modified version of the original partnership agreement.""

Harold frowned.

"Are you certain?""

"Absolutely. The original document is in our possession. The ownership percentages have been altered.""

I looked at the screen.

"So they're trying to take the money and claim the properties?""

Harold nodded.

"That's what it appears to be.""

Dad leaned forward.

"Then the fund should suspend all transactions until the investigation is complete.""

The trustees agreed.

The video conference ended with a temporary freeze.

For the first time that morning, I felt I could breathe.

But the relief lasted less than a minute.

Michael entered carrying a printed email.

"Mr. Bennett, we found Ryan.""

I looked up.

"Where?""

"At Whitmore Development's headquarters.""

Dad frowned.

"What's he doing there?""

Michael hesitated.

"He's holding a press conference.""

I almost laughed.

"About what?""

Michael placed the email on the table.

The headline was already circulating online.

*BENNETT DAUGHTER ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL FRAUD — WHITMORE FAMILY CLAIMS SECRET BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP.*

My mouth fell open.

Ryan had gone public.

The article claimed I'd promised to finance Whitmore Development, then withdrawn my support after a personal disagreement with Diane.

It also suggested that I'd used my father's influence to sabotage their company.

Dad read the article.

His expression became icy.

"He's trying to make her look like the criminal.""

Margaret nodded.

"And create doubt about the legitimacy of the frozen transaction.""

My phone began vibrating.

Messages from coworkers.

Friends.

Even people I hadn't spoken to in years.

One message stood out.

It was from my nonprofit's director.

*Maya, I've seen the article. Are you okay? Please tell me this isn't true.*

I felt tears prick my eyes.

I'd spent three years building trust at the nonprofit.

I'd worked weekends, visited shelters, and helped families find housing.

Now Ryan was trying to destroy my reputation with a few fabricated statements.

Dad placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Don't let him control the story.""

I shook my head.

"I don't want to hide anymore.""

He looked at me.

"What do you mean?""

"I want to tell the truth.""

Margaret nodded thoughtfully.

"That may be the right approach. But we need evidence.""

I looked at the original documents.

"Then let's show people the original agreements.""

Dad studied me.

"Are you sure?""

"Yes.""

I stood.

"Ryan wanted everyone to believe I was some poor girl who couldn't contribute anything. Now he's telling people I'm a criminal because I won't give him eight million dollars.""

My voice trembled, but I continued.

"I'm done letting him decide who I am.""

Michael opened his tablet.

"There's one more development.""

Dad turned.

"What?""

"Ryan's press conference is being broadcast live. He has just announced that he and Maya were secretly engaged.""

I froze.

"What?""

Michael played the video.

Ryan stood behind a podium, wearing a dark suit.

Diane was beside him, dabbing her eyes with a white handkerchief.

Ryan addressed the cameras.

"Maya and I had planned to marry. Unfortunately, her family has interfered with our relationship. I still love her, and I hope she eventually realizes that everything I did was intended to protect our future.""

A reporter raised her hand.

"Mr. Whitmore, do you have proof of an engagement?""

Ryan smiled sadly.

"Of course.""

He held up a photograph.

It showed me standing beside him at a restaurant.

On my left hand was a diamond ring.

I stared at the screen.

I remembered that evening.

It was our sixth month anniversary.

Ryan had asked me to try on a ring because he wanted my opinion about a gift for his sister.

I'd laughed and put it on for a photograph.

He'd taken the picture.

Now he was presenting it as proof that we'd been engaged.

Diane stepped toward the microphone.

"Ryan has been deeply hurt. Maya's family has always looked down on ours, and now they're using their wealth to destroy us.""

A reporter asked another question.

"Mrs. Whitmore, what about the allegations involving forged signatures?""

Diane smiled.

"Those documents were authorized by Maya. We have proof.""

She reached into her handbag.

Then she pulled out a document.

My heart stopped.

It was a signed declaration.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

But the declaration contained something even worse.

It stated that I had voluntarily transferred control of my grandmother's estate to Ryan Whitmore as part of our engagement agreement.

I looked at Margaret.

"Can they actually use that?""

She examined the screenshot.

"Not if it's forged.""

Dad stood.

"Then we respond with the original evidence.""

But before anyone could move, Michael received another message.

He read it silently.

Then he looked at me.

"Ms. Bennett, the press conference isn't the biggest problem.""

"What is?""

He turned his tablet toward us.

A live notification appeared from the county property registry.

*URGENT: OWNERSHIP TRANSFER RECORDED — BENNETT LAKESIDE ESTATE.*

I couldn't breathe.

The property had been transferred.

The house my grandmother left me.

The house Ryan had tried to use as collateral.

Now someone had officially registered a new owner.

I looked at Dad.

"Who owns my grandmother's house?""

Michael opened the registration details.

The new owner wasn't Ryan.

It wasn't Diane.

It wasn't even Charles.

It was a company called Reeves Legacy Holdings.

Margaret went completely pale.

"That's impossible.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

She slowly turned toward me.

"Because that company was dissolved twenty-seven years ago.""

Then she pointed to the person listed as its authorized representative.

*DANIEL REEVES.*

My biological father's name.

And beside his name was a signature dated yesterday.

I looked at the document, barely able to speak.

"Margaret...""

May you like

She closed her eyes.

"Maya, I don't think your father died when you were told he did.""
