Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
The Thanksgiving dinner ended without dessert.
I sat inside my father's SUV while Michael, his assistant, made three phone calls.
Outside, the Whitmore family stood beneath the mansion's entrance lights, watching us as if the entire evening had become a nightmare they couldn't wake from.
Ryan kept trying to approach the vehicle.
Dad had instructed the driver not to unlock the doors.
I watched my boyfriend through the tinted window.
He was pacing.
His mother was crying.
And Charles was shouting at him.
For the first time since I'd met Ryan, he looked completely powerless.
"Dad?""
He turned toward me.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"How bad is it?""
He didn't answer immediately.
"Bad enough that we need to take this seriously. But not bad enough that we can't protect you.""
I looked down at my hands.
"Why would he do this?""
Dad reached across the seat and squeezed my fingers.
"Because he thought you would never find out.""
A few minutes later, Michael climbed into the front passenger seat.
"Mr. Bennett, I've spoken with our legal department.""
"And?""
"The twelve-million-dollar application contains two guarantees using Ms. Bennett's identity. One involves the lakeside property. The second references a securities account.""
I looked up.
"My grandmother's account?""
Michael nodded.
"The account established in your name after her death.""
I closed my eyes.
Grandmother had left me more than a house.
She'd left a portfolio of investments, along with a letter instructing me never to let anyone pressure me into giving away what she'd worked her entire life to build.
Ryan knew about the house.
He didn't know the full value of the portfolio.
At least, I hadn't thought he did.
"How did he get those details?"" I asked.
Michael opened his tablet.
"That's what we're investigating.""
Dad leaned back.
"Was there a second loan?""
"Yes. Approximately $850,000, issued by a private lender three months ago.""
My stomach tightened.
"Three months ago?""
Michael nodded.
"The loan application contains an electronic signature matching the one on the investment guarantee.""
I stared at the screen.
The signature looked almost perfect.
Almost.
But I knew my own handwriting.
The capital M was wrong.
I always made the final stroke longer.
"That's not my signature.""
Dad's expression hardened.
"I believe you.""
Michael continued.
"There's another issue. The funds from the earlier loan were transferred through three separate accounts. The final destination appears to be a company registered to Ryan Whitmore.""
"Where did the money go?"" Dad asked.
Michael hesitated.
"We're still tracing it.""
My phone vibrated.
Ryan.
I declined the call.
It rang again.
Then a message appeared.
*RYAN: Please don't let your father ruin everything. We can fix this.*
Another message followed.
*RYAN: You know I was planning to marry you. Everything I did was for our future.*
I stared at the screen.
Then I typed.
*ME: You used my grandmother's house without permission. What future are you talking about?*
His reply came immediately.
*RYAN: Stop making me look like a criminal.*
I handed the phone to Dad.
He read the message and returned it.
"Don't engage with him. Let the attorneys handle this.""
I nodded.
But I wasn't ready to let go of one question.
"Why did he need twelve million dollars?""
Michael glanced at Dad.
Then he opened another document.
"The Whitmore Development Company has significant outstanding liabilities. Several properties are heavily leveraged. Their lenders have begun demanding repayment.""
"How much?"" Dad asked.
"Approximately eleven million dollars.""
I looked between them.
"So they weren't expanding?""
Michael shook his head.
"Not entirely. The new financing would have been used to cover existing debts.""
Dad's expression darkened.
"Then this wasn't simply a financing application. It was an attempt to use my daughter's assets to keep their company alive.""
My phone rang again.
This time it was Diane.
I hesitated before answering.
"Hello?""
Her voice was suddenly soft.
"Maya, sweetheart. I'm glad you picked up.""
I said nothing.
"Listen, I think we all got carried away tonight. Thanksgiving can be emotional. I want you to understand that I never meant to hurt you.""
I glanced at Dad.
He raised an eyebrow.
Diane continued.
"Your father is obviously a very successful man, and perhaps we should all sit down tomorrow. We could have a lovely dinner. Just family.""
I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Mrs. Whitmore, you threw my pie into the trash.""
"Oh, darling, please. That was just a misunderstanding.""
"You called me too poor for your son.""
"I was frustrated.""
"You said I had no class.""
There was a long pause.
Then her voice changed.
"Well, Maya, you must understand something. I was trying to protect Ryan. He has a certain future to maintain.""
I looked at the phone.
"From me?""
"Don't twist my words.""
"Then let me ask you something. If my father weren't Alexander Bennett, would you still want me in your family?""
Silence.
A long, revealing silence.
Finally, Diane said, "That's an unfair question.""
I laughed bitterly.
"No, Diane. It's the easiest question I've asked you all night.""
She lowered her voice.
"Ryan loves you. Don't destroy a good relationship over one bad evening.""
I ended the call.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Michael cleared his throat.
"Mr. Bennett, there's one more thing.""
Dad looked at him.
"What now?""
Michael turned his tablet around.
"We found an email sent from Ryan's personal account to a private lender two weeks ago.""
He opened the attachment.
I read the subject line.
*FINAL APPROVAL — BENNETT FAMILY GUARANTEE.*
Below it was a paragraph explaining that I would soon be marrying Ryan and that my father's wealth would provide additional security for the loan.
My stomach turned.
There was also an attachment.
A scanned document bearing my signature.
But this time, I recognized something else.
It wasn't just my signature.
It was a copy of a personal letter I'd written to Ryan several months earlier.
A letter containing my handwriting, my address, and private details about my grandmother's estate.
I looked at Dad.
"He stole my letter.""
Michael nodded.
"It appears that he used it to reproduce your signature.""
Dad closed his eyes for a moment.
Then he opened them.
"Call our attorneys. I want the original records preserved, and I want every lender notified that Maya never authorized these transactions.""
Michael immediately began typing.
My phone vibrated again.
This time, it wasn't Ryan.
It was an unknown number.
The message contained a photograph of a document.
I opened it.
My breath caught.
It was a marriage license application.
My name was printed beside Ryan's.
The date was from three weeks earlier.
At the bottom, beneath the section marked Applicant's Signature, was my name.
I had never applied for a marriage license.
I had never agreed to marry him.
And then another message arrived.
*UNKNOWN NUMBER: Maya, you need to know something. Ryan isn't the only person involved. His mother knew about the forged documents before Thanksgiving.*
I slowly turned toward Dad.
"Someone just sent me this.""
He read the message.
His face became completely still.
"Michael?""
"Yes, sir?""
"Find out who sent it.""
I stared at the photograph again.
Then I noticed a second signature on the document.
Diane Whitmore.
And beside her name was a handwritten note:
*Once Maya is legally connected to Ryan, the Bennett assets become much easier to access.*
My father took the phone from my hand.
May you like
For the first time that night, he looked genuinely furious.
"Tomorrow morning," he said quietly, "the Whitmore family is going to discover exactly what happens when they mistake my daughter's kindness for weakness.""
