Chapter 8: The Woman Who Entered My Father's Office
I watched the security footage three times.
There was no mistake.
The woman entering my father's office was Diane Whitmore.
She wore a dark coat, black gloves, and carried the same cream-colored handbag she'd brought to Thanksgiving.
I remembered her sitting at the dining table, laughing while my grandmother's pie disappeared into the trash.
Now I was looking at evidence that she'd entered my father's private office using my credentials.
"Dad, why was she here?""
He looked at Michael.
"Find out who authorized her visit.""
Michael began typing.
"According to reception records, she claimed to be delivering documents on Maya's behalf.""
I shook my head.
"I've never sent Diane anywhere.""
Dad's jaw tightened.
"Check the visitor log and the access records. I want every second accounted for.""
Michael nodded.
Margaret examined the transfer authorization.
"There's a serious issue here. If Diane used Maya's access credentials to approve the transfer, the bank may initially treat the transaction as legitimate.""
"But it wasn't," I said.
"Correct. We'll need the original audit records.""
Dad stood.
"Then we'll get them.""
He called the head of corporate security and instructed him to preserve all relevant footage.
Five minutes later, Michael received another message.
"Mr. Bennett, we have a problem.""
Dad turned.
"What now?""
"The security system shows that Diane wasn't alone.""
He enlarged the footage.
A second person appeared behind her.
A man wearing a gray suit.
I recognized him immediately.
Charles Whitmore.
He was carrying a leather briefcase.
"They both entered your office?"" I asked.
Michael nodded.
"And they stayed for forty-seven minutes.""
Dad looked at the screen.
"Where were the documents kept?""
Michael pointed to a locked cabinet.
"Here.""
"Who has access?""
"Only you, me, and Robert Hayes.""
I stared at him.
"So Robert could have let them in.""
Michael didn't answer.
Dad picked up his phone.
"Get Robert to headquarters. Tell him I need to speak with him immediately.""
Michael hesitated.
"Sir, he isn't answering.""
Dad's expression darkened.
"Try again.""
He did.
No answer.
Then a notification appeared on Michael's tablet.
"Mr. Bennett, Robert's office access has been disabled.""
"By whom?""
Michael checked.
"By Robert himself. He submitted a resignation notice ten minutes ago.""
Dad slowly put down his phone.
"He's running.""
I looked at the screen again.
Diane and Charles were carrying documents out of the office.
One of them was a blue folder.
The same color as Grandmother's original records.
I felt sick.
"They took something.""
Michael paused the footage.
"Possibly.""
Dad leaned forward.
"Can you identify the document?""
Michael enlarged the image.
A label was visible on the folder.
*BENNETT LEGACY FUND — ORIGINAL BENEFICIARIES.*
Margaret immediately stood.
"That's the document your grandmother referred to.""
Dad turned toward her.
"What does it contain?""
"The names of the people entitled to receive distributions from the fund. If someone has altered the beneficiary records, they could attempt to redirect the assets.""
I looked at the screen.
"How much money is in the fund?""
Margaret took a breath.
"Approximately sixty-eight million dollars.""
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Diane.
I stared at the screen.
Dad shook his head.
"Don't answer.""
But I wanted to hear what she had to say.
I put the call on speaker.
"Hello?""
"Maya, darling!""
Her voice was sweet again.
Almost cheerful.
"I hope you're having a better morning.""
I said nothing.
"I was thinking about last night. I really think we should put everything behind us.""
"Why did you enter my father's office?""
Silence.
Then a nervous laugh.
"What are you talking about?""
"We have security footage.""
Diane's voice changed.
"Well, I was only delivering documents.""
"Using my access card?""
"You gave it to me.""
"No, I didn't.""
A pause.
Then she sighed.
"Listen, Maya. You're making a terrible mistake by turning this into a legal battle. Ryan is devastated.
Charles is worried. Everyone is upset.""
"Where are the documents you took?""
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
"Then why were you in Dad's office for forty-seven minutes?""
She lowered her voice.
"Because someone needed to correct a mistake your grandmother made years ago.""
Dad moved closer to the phone.
"Mrs. Whitmore, this is Alexander Bennett.""
Diane went silent.
"I suggest you return every document taken from my office.""
"Mr. Bennett, please. We can resolve this privately.""
"Where is Robert Hayes?""
Another pause.
"I don't know.""
"Then perhaps you can tell me why your family received two and a half million dollars from an unauthorized transfer.""
Diane's voice became sharp.
"That money was owed to us.""
"Based on what agreement?""
"An agreement your daughter knows nothing about.""
I stepped closer.
"Then explain it to me.""
Diane laughed.
"Your grandmother wasn't the innocent woman you think she was.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Don't talk about her.""
"She destroyed Charles's company. She took everything that belonged to him. And now you're sitting there pretending to be a victim.""
Dad interrupted.
"Enough.""
Diane's voice became almost desperate.
"Alexander, please. We can still work something out. Your daughter doesn't need to know everything.""
I looked at the phone.
"That's the problem, Diane. You keep making decisions about what I deserve to know.""
I ended the call.
Dad looked at Michael.
"Send the footage to our attorneys and notify the bank about the unauthorized transfer.""
Michael nodded.
Then Margaret opened the original trust documents.
"There's something we haven't considered.""
Dad turned.
"What?""
She pointed to the beneficiary section.
"Your grandmother established a condition. The fund cannot be transferred, altered, or distributed without the approval of its primary beneficiary.""
I looked at her.
"Who is that?""
Margaret turned the page.
The answer was written clearly.
MAYA ELIZABETH BENNETT.
I stared.
"Me?""
Margaret nodded.
"Your grandmother gave you complete authority over the trust when you turned twenty-five.""
Dad looked surprised.
"Why didn't I know about this?""
"Because she instructed the trustees to communicate directly with Maya.""
I couldn't believe it.
"Does that mean Charles can't access the money?""
"Not without your authorization.""
A slow understanding settled over me.
That was why they wanted my signature.
That was why Ryan had been so interested in marrying me.
That was why Diane had entered my father's office.
They weren't simply trying to get a loan.
They were trying to take control of an entire investment fund.
Margaret closed the folder.
"There's one more complication. The trust's annual distribution is scheduled for tomorrow.""
Dad frowned.
"How much?""
"Eight million dollars.""
"And where is it going?""
Margaret looked at me.
"According to the updated instructions submitted yesterday, the entire distribution has been redirected to a company called Whitmore Holdings.""
My hands went cold.
"Who approved that?""
Margaret turned the document toward me.
At the bottom was my electronic signature.
But I'd never signed it.
May you like
And beneath it was a handwritten note.
*Approved by Maya Bennett — through her authorized representative, Ryan Whitmore.*
