Chapter 7: The Video He Thought Would Save Him
Daniel had always been good at making people doubt themselves.
That was his greatest talent.
Not his job.
Not his charm.
Not the way he could walk into a room and make everyone believe he was the calmest person there.
It was the way he could take the truth, twist it slightly, and make you wonder if you were the one who misunderstood.
And now he had a video.
A video he believed would prove Emily was lying.
Detective Grant looked at me carefully.
“We need to know what he has.””
Rachel’s face had gone pale.
“He’ll use it.””
“Use it how?”” I asked.
She looked at me.
“However he needs to.””
I grabbed my phone.
“I’m calling him.””
Detective Grant stopped me.
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
“Because right now, he thinks he has control.””
She pointed toward the photograph on the table.
“He believes whatever is on that video gives him power.””
I looked at the picture.
Daniel standing beside Victor.
Six months before the lake house.
Six months before Emily’s life changed.
“What if the video really shows something?””
Detective Grant’s expression softened.
“Then we look at it carefully.””
“What if it hurts Emily?””
“Then we protect her.””
I nodded.
But inside, I was already preparing myself.
Because I knew Daniel.
Whatever was on that video, he would not have it because he wanted justice.
He would have it because he wanted control.
An hour later, Daniel agreed to meet.
Not at the police station.
Not at the hospital.
At our house.
The house where Emily had grown up.
The house where she had hidden her pain while we ate dinner together.
Detective Grant insisted we bring officers.
Daniel opened the door before we even knocked.
He looked calm.
Too calm.
“Sarah.””
I hated how familiar that sounded.
Like he was still my husband.
Like we were still a normal family having a difficult conversation.
His eyes moved to Detective Grant.
“You brought police to my home?””
“You requested a meeting.””
“I requested to talk to my wife.””
I stepped forward.
“Not anymore.””
That sentence hit him.
For a second, his face changed.
Then the mask returned.
“Sarah, you’re angry.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I’m awake.””
He sighed.
“Emily has been manipulated.””
My hands tightened.
“By who?””
“I don’t know yet.””
“Then why did you stop me from taking her to a doctor?””
His mouth opened.
Closed.
A small pause.
Enough.
Detective Grant noticed too.
Daniel walked into the living room.
“I have evidence.””
He picked up a laptop.
My stomach turned.
“No screens near Emily,” Detective Grant said.
“She’s not here.””
“Good.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because she doesn’t need to see what she did.””
My heart stopped.
“What she did?””
He opened the laptop.
“I have footage from the lake house.””
Rachel whispered behind me.
“Don’t.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You should have stayed out of this.””
The way he said it told me everything.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Anger.
He had known Rachel was involved.
Detective Grant stepped closer.
“Play the video.””
Daniel smiled slightly.
Finally.
The moment he wanted.
The video began.
The image showed a hallway.
A security camera angle.
A younger Emily walking through the house.
She looked nervous.
Scared.
Then Daniel appeared.
He paused the video.
“There.””
He looked at me.
“She follows me.””
I stared at the screen.
That was his evidence?
My daughter walking through a hallway?
“She was seventeen.””
“She was old enough to know right from wrong.””
I felt something inside me break.
“You’re blaming her.””
“I’m saying she’s not telling the full story.””
The video continued.
Emily entered a room.
Daniel followed.
The footage had no sound.
Then something happened.
Emily turned.
She looked back.
And she froze.
Daniel leaned closer to the screen.
“She was hiding something.””
Detective Grant watched carefully.
“Continue.””
The footage moved forward.
A few minutes later, Victor entered the hallway.
Daniel stopped the video.
“See?””
“See what?”” I asked.
“She knew him.””
I looked at the screen.
Emily had looked at Victor.
That was all.
A scared teenager recognizing an adult.
Daniel thought it was proof.
But then Detective Grant said:
“Continue.””
Daniel hesitated.
Only briefly.
But I saw it.
He pressed play.
Victor walked away.
Then the camera showed something Daniel clearly did not expect.
Daniel himself.
Walking out the front door.
At 11:06.
The room went silent.
Daniel’s expression changed.
Just for a moment.
Detective Grant noticed.
“You didn’t mention that part.””
Daniel recovered.
“I left briefly.””
“Why?””
“To make a phone call.””
“For six hours?””
He didn’t answer.
The footage continued.
Another camera angle appeared.
The driveway.
A vehicle arrived.
Daniel leaned forward.
“No.””
The word escaped him.
Everyone heard it.
I looked at him.
“What?””
He stared at the screen.
Because the video wasn’t showing Emily.
It wasn’t showing Victor.
It was showing Daniel.
Returning to the house.
At 2:14 a.m.
Except Daniel had told everyone he was gone until morning.
Detective Grant turned toward him.
“Why did you lie about your location?””
Daniel said nothing.
For the first time since I knew him…
He had nothing.
Then the video froze.
The screen went black.
Daniel closed the laptop.
“That’s not the whole video.””
Detective Grant looked at him.
“Where is the rest?””
His face hardened.
“Exactly.””
I felt cold.
Because I understood.
He hadn’t shown us the video to prove his innocence.
May you like
He had shown us because someone had removed the part he needed.
And now he was afraid we would find it.
