Chapter 6: The Woman Who Stayed Silent

I stared at the message until the letters blurred.

Rachel Reed.

The woman who had been at the lake house.

The woman who apparently knew something.

The woman who had waited until now to speak.

I showed Detective Grant.

“She contacted you?””

“No.””

“Do not respond yet.””

But before I could put the phone down, another message arrived.

*I’m sorry. I should have told you months ago.*

Then:

*Meet me somewhere safe. Alone.*

Detective Grant immediately shook her head.

“Not alone.””

I nodded.

“You’ll come with me?””

“Yes.””

Two hours later, we met Rachel at a small café near the hospital.

She looked nothing like the person I imagined.

She wasn’t intimidating.

She looked tired.

Like someone who had not slept properly in months.

When she saw me, she immediately started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I stayed standing.

“You knew.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

“You knew my daughter was scared.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Daniel was lying.””

Her face fell.

“Yes.””

I felt anger burning through me.

“Then why did you say nothing?””

Rachel looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Victor.””

I waited.

“And Daniel.””

That surprised me.

“Daniel?””

She nodded.

“My husband trusted Daniel. They had business together.””

Detective Grant listened carefully.

“What kind of business?””

Rachel swallowed.

“Investments. Property deals. Money transfers.””

“Illegal?””

“I don’t know.””

“But you suspected something.””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“I suspected Daniel knew exactly who Victor was.””

My hands shook.

“Explain.””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“Victor had a reputation.””

“What reputation?””

“He used people’s secrets.””

The café suddenly felt too small.

“He collected information. He made people dependent on him.””

“And Daniel?””

“Daniel owed him money.””

I stared.

“How much?””

“I don’t know.””

“But enough to risk my daughter?””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

That single word destroyed something inside me.

Detective Grant leaned forward.

“Mrs. Reed, tell us exactly what happened that weekend.””

Rachel looked at me.

“I arrived because Chloe called me.””

“Why?””

“Because she was worried about Emily.””

My heart tightened.

“Chloe knew?””

“She suspected something was wrong.””

Rachel continued.

“When I arrived, Emily was upstairs.””

“Was she alone?””

Rachel hesitated.

“No.””

My fingers gripped the table.

“Who was with her?””

Rachel looked at Detective Grant.

Then at me.

“Daniel.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“He was talking to her.””

“What did he say?””

Rachel looked sick.

“He was telling her that if she spoke, her mother would lose everything.””

My eyes filled.

The same words.

The same threat.

Rachel continued.

“I confronted him.””

“What happened?””

“He told me to stay out of it.””

“And you left?””

Her eyes filled with shame.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Victor threatened my family.””

I leaned back.

“So everyone was afraid.””

Rachel nodded.

“And Emily was the only one who had no power.””

The truth hurt because it was simple.

Everyone had an excuse.

Everyone had a reason.

And my daughter had been the one paying the price.

Detective Grant looked at Rachel.

“Do you have any evidence?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then she reached into her bag.

She placed a small envelope on the table.

“I kept this because I knew one day someone would need it.””

Detective Grant opened it carefully.

Inside was a printed photograph.

Not from the lake house.

A different one.

It showed Daniel and Victor standing together.

But the date was what made my heart stop.

It was taken six months before the trip.

Before Emily ever went to that house.

Detective Grant looked at the back.

Then her expression changed.

“What is it?””

She turned the photograph over.

Written on the back were four words.

*Daniel knew everything already.*

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I ignored it.

It rang again.

Then again.

Finally, Detective Grant answered it.

“Mr. Carter, this is Detective Grant.””

Silence.

Then her face changed.

She looked at me.

“Mr. Carter says he has proof Emily is lying.””

My blood ran cold.

“What proof?””

Detective Grant listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“He says he has a video.””

Rachel whispered:

“No.””

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“He found the backup.””

“Backup of what?””

Rachel stared at me.

“The camera footage that shows what happened after midnight.””

I felt my heart stop.

Because suddenly I understood.

Daniel wasn’t calling to defend himself.

May you like

He was calling because he knew we were getting close.

And he had found the one thing that could change everything.
