Chapter 2: The Lake House
For several seconds, I couldn’t understand the sentence.
My brain heard the words.
It simply refused to connect them.
“Daniel knows?””
Emily nodded.
“How?””
She wouldn’t answer.
Outside the locked door, voices rose.
A nurse was telling Daniel he needed to return to the waiting area.
Daniel argued.
“I’m her father.””
“Sir, lower your voice.””
“I have a right to know what’s happening.””
Dr. Patel pressed a button near the bed and quietly spoke to someone through the wall intercom.
“I need hospital security on this floor.””
Daniel must have heard her.
The hallway suddenly went silent.
Emily stared at the door.
“He’s going to be mad.””
I sat beside her.
“Emily, listen to me. Whatever happens after today, you are not going home with him.””
Her eyes filled again.
“You believe me?””
“I don’t even know the whole story yet.””
I took her face gently between my hands.
“But I believe that you’re afraid.””
Her chin trembled.
“That’s enough.””
Dr. Patel returned to us.
“Emily, I need to ask some questions. You can refuse any question you’re not ready to answer.””
Emily nodded.
“Do you know who caused the pregnancy?””
A long silence.
“Yes.””
“Is that person an adult?””
Emily squeezed her eyes shut.
“Yes.””
My stomach turned.
Dr. Patel remained calm.
“Is that person someone you know?””
“Yes.””
“Someone in your family or household?””
Emily stopped breathing for a second.
I felt my own pulse pounding in my ears.
Then she whispered, “Not exactly.””
I leaned closer.
“What does that mean?””
“Mom, please.””
“Okay.””
I forced myself back.
“Okay. I’m listening.””
Emily wiped her cheeks.
“The lake house happened in July.””
I remembered the trip immediately.
Daniel’s college friend, Marcus Reed, owned a vacation property near Lake Geneva.
Daniel had taken Emily there for a weekend.
I hadn’t gone.
My mother had undergone knee surgery, and I stayed home to help her.
Daniel said Emily wanted to come because Marcus’s daughter, Chloe, would be there.
When they returned Sunday night, Emily barely spoke.
Daniel told me she was exhausted from swimming.
I believed him.
“Was Marcus there?”” I asked.
Emily nodded.
“Chloe?””
“No.””
The word barely came out.
I stared at her.
“Daniel told me Chloe was there.””
“She wasn’t.””
My hands went cold.
“Who was?””
“Daniel. Marcus. Me.””
Dr. Patel pulled a chair closer.
“Emily, you don’t need to describe anything that happened in detail right now. I only need enough information to make sure you’re safe and to bring in the appropriate professionals.””
Emily nodded.
Tears rolled silently down her face.
“Marcus kept giving me drinks.””
My stomach dropped.
“Alcohol?””
“I didn’t know at first.””
I shut my eyes.
“Daniel was there?””
“Yes.””
“What did he do?””
Emily looked at me.
Nothing in my life prepared me for the expression on her face.
“He told me to stop being rude.””
I couldn’t speak.
Emily continued.
“I said I wanted to go home. Daniel said I was embarrassing him.””
She picked at the edge of the blanket.
“Later, I got really dizzy.””
“Emily…”
“I don’t remember everything.””
“You don’t have to.””
“When I woke up the next morning, I knew something was wrong.””
I stood and walked two steps away because I thought I might collapse.
Dr. Patel quietly handed me a tissue.
I didn’t realize I was crying.
“Did you tell Daniel?”” she asked Emily.
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
Emily looked toward me.
“He said I was confused.””
My hands curled into fists.
“He told me Marcus had put me in the guest room because I was sick. He said nothing happened.””
“Then why were you afraid?””
“Because Daniel kept telling me not to mention the weekend to Mom.””
There it was.
The secret.
The lie.
The reason my husband had spent three weeks stopping me from taking our daughter to a doctor.
“Did Daniel know you might be pregnant?”” I asked.
Emily nodded.
“How?””
“I took a home test.””
“When?””
“Three weeks ago.””
The same week she started refusing food.
“The test was positive?””
“Yes.””
“What did Daniel do?””
“He found it.””
My heart hammered.
“He found the test?””
“He came into my bathroom while I was crying.””
Emily’s voice dropped.
“He took it away.””
I remembered Daniel carrying the trash outside that night.
I had joked that he was suddenly helpful.
God.
“He told me the test could be wrong,” Emily continued.
“Then he said he would handle everything.””
“What does that mean?””
“I don’t know.””
“Did he threaten you?””
Emily hesitated.
“He said if you found out, our family would be destroyed.””
I felt sick.
“That wasn’t your responsibility.””
“He said you’d blame me.””
“I would never—”
“I know that now.””
Those four words hurt more than anything else.
I know that now.
Meaning she hadn’t known before.
Meaning someone had convinced my daughter that my love for her had conditions.
Dr. Patel stepped outside briefly.
When she returned, another woman accompanied her.
She introduced herself as a hospital social worker named Karen Ellis.
Karen sat near Emily.
She spoke softly.
She explained that because Emily was seventeen and had disclosed circumstances involving an adult, certain safeguarding steps had to happen.
Emily looked frightened.
“Will Daniel know what I said?””
Karen answered carefully.
“We’re going to focus first on keeping you safe.””
“What about Marcus?””
Karen paused.
“There are people whose job is to investigate what happened. You don’t have to solve that tonight.””
A knock came at the door.
Emily jumped again.
But this time it wasn’t Daniel.
A security officer opened the door slightly.
“Mrs. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“Your husband has left the floor.””
“Left?””
“He was asked to wait downstairs.””
Something about that bothered me.
Daniel had fought desperately to reach us.
Now he had simply left?
I grabbed my purse.
My phone was inside.
Seven missed calls.
All from Daniel.
Then I noticed a text.
*We need to talk before Emily says something she can’t take back.*
I showed Karen.
Her expression hardened.
“Don’t respond yet.””
Then another message appeared.
This one wasn’t from Daniel.
Unknown number.
Only seven words.
*Sarah, Daniel didn’t tell you everything.*
Below it was a photograph.
Daniel and Marcus.
Standing outside the lake house.
The date stamp was from the morning after Emily said she woke up confused.
And beside them was a third man I had never seen before.
Emily saw the picture over my shoulder.
She screamed.
“That’s him!””
I turned.
“Marcus?””
“No.””
She pointed at the third man.
May you like
Her entire hand shook.
“Him.””
