Chapter 13: The Truth Inside the Box
The sentence written inside Emily’s journal burned into my mind.
If she remembers, everything falls apart.
Not if she lies.
Not if she tells someone.
If she remembers.
That meant Daniel knew.
He knew there was something Emily had buried.
Something he was terrified she would recover.
Detective Grant placed the evidence bag containing the journal on the table.
“We found this inside a locked container in Daniel’s office.””
Emily stared at it.
“That’s mine.””
“I know.””
“I thought he destroyed it.””
“Why?””
“Because I never saw it again after that night.””
I looked at the journal.
A simple blue notebook.
Something most people would consider worthless.
But Daniel had treated it like a weapon.
“What’s inside?”” I asked.
Emily swallowed.
“Things I wrote.””
“About the lake house?””
“Not at first.””
Detective Grant carefully opened the evidence bag.
“We need Emily to identify it.””
Emily nodded.
The detective slid the journal toward her.
Emily touched the cover.
Her fingers trembled.
“I wrote this when I was fifteen.””
“Why did Daniel keep it?””
Emily slowly opened the first page.
Then she stopped.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She turned the journal around.
The first pages were filled with her handwriting.
School.
Friends.
Normal teenage thoughts.
Then halfway through…
A page had been removed.
Emily flipped faster.
Another missing.
Then another.
“He tore them out.””
Detective Grant examined the binding.
“Recently?””
“No.””
Emily looked closer.
“After the lake house.””
My stomach turned.
“He removed the pages that could prove something.””
Emily nodded.
Then suddenly froze.
“Wait.””
“What?””
She flipped to the back.
A small folded piece of paper fell out.
Everyone went still.
Detective Grant carefully picked it up.
“It wasn’t attached.””
“What is it?””
She unfolded it.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter…”
“What?””
“It’s a handwritten note.””
“From who?””
She looked at Emily.
“Your daughter.””
Emily shook her head.
“I didn’t write that.””
Detective Grant handed it to her.
Emily read it silently.
Then her face went completely pale.
“What does it say?””
She couldn’t answer.
I took the paper.
Only a few lines.
*Mom, if you find this, it means I was too scared to tell you. Daniel knows about the night. He knows I remember more than I told him. I think he’s afraid because Victor wasn’t alone.*
My heart stopped.
“Wasn’t alone?””
Emily covered her mouth.
“I remember now.””
Detective Grant leaned forward.
“What do you remember?””
Emily looked terrified.
“Someone else was there.””
“Who?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“Try.””
Emily closed her eyes.
“I saw another car.””
“When?””
“After Daniel came back.””
“Who was driving?””
“I don’t know.””
“What did you see?””
Emily’s breathing became uneven.
“I saw Daniel talking to someone.””
“Who?””
“I couldn’t see their face.””
She opened her eyes.
“But I remember one thing.””
“What?””
“They called him by his first name.””
“Daniel?””
“No.””
Emily looked at me.
“They called him David.””
The room froze.
“David?””
Emily nodded.
“Daniel hated when people called him that.””
I stared.
“My husband’s name is Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“Why would someone call him David?””
Emily whispered:
“Because that’s his real name.””
Nobody spoke.
Detective Grant immediately stood.
“I need to verify something.””
She stepped away.
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face had lost all color.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“I knew.””
My heart dropped.
“You knew?””
“I knew Daniel wasn’t his first name.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know how far it went.””
I felt betrayed all over again.
Everyone had pieces.
Everyone knew something.
And I was the last person to find out.
A few minutes later, Detective Grant returned.
Her expression was serious.
“We confirmed it.””
I felt cold.
“Confirmed what?””
“Daniel Carter was born David Michael Carter.””
“Why change his name?””
Detective Grant looked at the documents.
“Because ten years ago, he was involved in a financial investigation.””
My stomach tightened.
“Was he charged?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because a witness withdrew cooperation.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
“Who was the witness?””
Detective Grant didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Marcus Reed.””
The room went silent.
The entire story shifted.
The lake house.
The money.
Victor.
The secrets.
It was never a new problem.
It was an old one.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Sarah?””
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“Someone who can finally tell you what Daniel did.””
“Who?””
The voice lowered.
“His real partner.””
The call ended.
Detective Grant immediately traced the number.
Then looked at the screen.
“It came from inside the city.””
“Who?””
May you like
She stared.
“Marcus Reed.””
