Chapter 4: The Man Who Signed My Name
Michael held the document high enough for the audience to see.
"The person who verified my mother's signature was Robert Hensley.""
A cold shiver ran down my spine.
Robert Hensley.
My divorce attorney.
The man who had sat across from me eighteen years earlier, wearing a gray suit and promising that everything would be handled fairly.
He had been the one who explained Daniel's financial situation.
He had been the one who told me there was no point pursuing child support because my former husband had lost nearly everything.
And now his name appeared beneath a document authorizing a loan against my home.
I grabbed Michael's arm.
"That's impossible.""
Michael lowered the paper.
"I know, Mom.""
Daniel rushed toward the stage.
"Give me those documents!""
A university security officer stepped into his path.
"Sir, please remain where you are.""
Daniel pointed at Michael.
"That's confidential business information! My son has no right to display it!""
Michael didn't move.
"Then explain why my name is on a loan application I never signed.""
Daniel's face reddened.
"You're misunderstanding the paperwork.""
"Really? Then why does it list me as a guarantor for $2.6 million?""
Chloe stood abruptly.
"Michael, darling, this is a misunderstanding. Your father was trying to build something for your future.""
Michael looked at her.
"By using my mother's house?""
Chloe's lips tightened.
"Nobody was going to take your mother's house.""
I stepped toward the microphone.
"Then why is it listed as collateral?""
She turned toward me.
"Margaret, please don't make this worse.""
I stared at her.
"You stole my seat this morning. Now you're telling me my home is part of a business loan I never agreed to. How much worse could it possibly get?""
A murmur swept through the auditorium.
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"Margaret, listen. This was only a preliminary application.""
"With my forged signature?""
"We had permission.""
"No, you didn't.""
He looked toward the audience, clearly realizing that every word was being heard.
"Can we discuss this privately?""
Michael laughed bitterly.
"Privately? Like you discussed my mother's child support privately with your attorney?""
Daniel's expression changed.
My son pulled another sheet from the envelope.
"There's a second document.""
Chloe immediately grabbed her husband's sleeve.
"Daniel, stop him.""
Michael looked down at the page.
"This is a copy of a property authorization submitted to the lender. It claims my mother agreed to place her home under a temporary security agreement.""
I shook my head.
"I've never seen that.""
"I know.""
Michael turned toward the university president.
"Sir, I apologize for bringing this into today's ceremony. But my mother deserves to know what happened to her.""
The president nodded solemnly.
"Mr. Williams, I think it's important that these concerns be addressed appropriately.""
Daniel seized the opportunity.
"Exactly. This is a family matter. We can settle it after the ceremony.""
Michael shook his head.
"No, Dad. This stopped being a family matter when you submitted fraudulent documents to a financial institution.""
Chloe let out a sharp breath.
"You have absolutely no proof of fraud!""
Michael removed a small flash drive from his pocket.
"Actually, I have more than the application.""
Daniel froze.
Michael continued.
"I have the original email chain, the electronic submission records, and a recording of a conversation that took place in Dad's office.""
Chloe's face drained of color.
I looked at my son.
"What recording?""
Michael hesitated.
"Mom, I didn't want to tell you until I had everything verified.""
Daniel's voice rose.
"Where did you get that recording?""
Michael stared at him.
"From the security system in your conference room.""
For the first time that morning, Daniel looked genuinely frightened.
Chloe turned toward him.
"You told me those cameras weren't recording audio.""
Daniel didn't answer.
That single sentence changed the atmosphere in the room.
The audience began whispering more loudly.
Michael placed the flash drive on the podium.
"I wasn't going to use this today. But after what happened to Mom, I think everyone deserves to understand why my father suddenly became interested in my financial future.""
The university president approached the microphone.
"Michael, I suggest we pause the ceremony and allow the appropriate authorities to review these allegations.""
Michael nodded.
"Of course.""
Then he turned toward me.
"Mom, there's something I need you to know.""
I reached for his hand.
"What is it?""
He lowered his voice.
"The loan application wasn't the only document they submitted.""
My stomach tightened.
"What else?""
Michael glanced toward Daniel.
Then he whispered:
"They tried to transfer ownership of your house.""
I couldn't breathe.
My little house.
The one with the cracked kitchen tiles and the garden where Michael had planted his first tomato plant.
The house I'd spent eighteen years paying for.
The house where I'd held him during thunderstorms.
"Michael," I whispered, "when?""
"Six weeks ago.""
May you like
He squeezed my hand.
"And Mom, the transfer was approved for processing.""
