Chapter 14: The Truth in Front of the Entire University
The next morning, Michael received a call from the university president.
He listened without interrupting.
Then he looked at Laura.
"He's asking me to attend a disciplinary meeting.""
"On what grounds?"" she asked.
"Alleged misuse of confidential financial information.""
Laura shook her head.
"That's an attempt to turn you into the accused.""
Michael nodded.
"I know.""
I looked at my son.
"Do you have to go?""
"Yes, Mom. I won't let them tell my university I'm a criminal.""
Laura checked the time.
"Then we're going together.""
We arrived at the university shortly after ten.
The graduation decorations were still hanging in the main building.
Banners congratulating the graduating class covered the walls.
Students walked through the hallways carrying flowers and rolled-up diplomas.
I watched them and remembered how happy I'd been the previous morning.
It seemed like another lifetime.
The president's office was on the second floor.
When we entered, Daniel was already there.
Chloe sat beside him.
Both were dressed impeccably.
Daniel wore a dark suit.
Chloe carried a cream-colored handbag and had her diamond bracelet prominently displayed.
She looked at me.
"Well, Margaret. You certainly brought an audience.""
I ignored her.
The university president stood.
"Please take your seats.""
Laura introduced herself and placed a folder on the table.
Daniel immediately spoke.
"Before we begin, I want to clarify that this is an unfortunate family dispute. My son has obtained private company documents without authorization and is using them to make false accusations.""
Michael remained calm.
"Then explain the documents.""
Daniel opened his briefcase.
"I have evidence showing that you received financial benefits from the family trust.""
He placed several statements on the table.
"Over two million dollars was transferred into an account under your name.""
Michael looked at the documents.
"An account I never opened.""
Daniel smiled.
"That's convenient.""
Chloe leaned forward.
"Michael, we have tried to help you. Your father offered you a wonderful position, and you responded by publicly attacking us.""
I looked at her.
"You tried to take my house.""
She turned toward me.
"Please, Margaret. This meeting isn't about you.""
Laura placed her hand on the table.
"Actually, Mrs. Williams is an original beneficiary of the disputed trust and the registered owner of the property involved in the proposed transaction. She is directly relevant.""
Daniel's smile disappeared.
Laura continued.
"We also have a temporary preservation order from the court.""
She handed the president a copy.
"All disputed trust assets must remain preserved pending judicial review.""
The president read the document.
Then he looked at Daniel.
"Mr. Williams, are you aware of this order?""
Daniel adjusted his tie.
"It's a temporary measure. It proves nothing.""
"Then why did you send documents suggesting the money had already been distributed?""
Daniel opened his mouth.
Laura answered before he could.
"Because those documents appear to have been generated using an account opened without Michael's authorization.""
She placed the account-opening records on the table.
Then she added the original trust agreement.
"The original agreement identifies Michael as the primary beneficiary and Margaret Williams as a co-administrator and secondary beneficiary.""
Chloe shook her head.
"That agreement was amended.""
Laura placed the disputed amendment beside it.
"Yes. And the amendment is now under investigation because the signatures and authorization records have been challenged.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Robert Hensley handled that.""
Laura nodded.
"Mr. Hensley has been named in the investigation.""
For the first time, Chloe looked genuinely nervous.
The president turned toward Michael.
"Do you have anything you'd like to say?""
Michael stood.
"Yes.""
He looked at his father.
"Yesterday, I stood on this stage and thanked the person who paid for my education. I thought that was the most important thing I would ever say publicly.""
He paused.
"But I was wrong.""
He placed a small folder on the table.
"My father has spent eighteen years claiming he couldn't support me because his company had failed. Meanwhile, a family trust established in my name was being transferred between companies controlled by him and his wife.""
Daniel interrupted.
"That's a lie!""
Michael didn't flinch.
"Then why did you tell Victor Lang that the trust had been legally distributed?""
Daniel's expression changed.
Michael continued.
"Why was an account opened using my personal information? Why was my name placed on a $2.6 million loan application? And why was my mother's home listed as collateral?""
Chloe stood.
"Enough!""
The president raised his hand.
"Mrs. Williams, please sit down.""
She remained standing.
"You have no idea what you're doing, Michael. You're destroying your father's reputation.""
Michael looked directly at her.
"No. I'm showing people what he did.""
Laura opened another folder.
"We also have a recording from eighteen years ago, subject to authentication, in which Mr. Williams discusses concealing trust assets and removing Margaret from administrative control.""
Daniel's face went pale.
"That recording is illegal!""
Laura replied calmly.
"That question can be addressed through the appropriate legal process. The recording is being preserved for investigators.""
The president looked increasingly uncomfortable.
Then Laura placed the payment schedule on the table.
"These records also show proposed payments to several individuals following the liquidation.""
The president examined the names.
"Four hundred and fifty thousand dollars to a law firm?""
"Yes.""
"Seven hundred and fifty thousand to Susan Miller?""
"Yes.""
"And two million four hundred thousand to Daniel Williams?""
Laura nodded.
Chloe sat down slowly.
Daniel looked at his wife.
She looked away.
Then the conference room door opened.
A university security officer entered.
"Mr. Williams, there are two investigators downstairs requesting to speak with you.""
Daniel stood.
"What investigators?""
"Financial crimes investigators.""
Chloe grabbed her handbag.
"This is ridiculous.""
Laura looked toward the door.
"They're here regarding the disputed trust transactions and property filings.""
Daniel turned toward Michael.
"You did this.""
Michael shook his head.
"No, Dad. You did.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"You think your mother can protect you forever?""
Michael's voice remained steady.
"I don't need protection from the truth.""
The investigators entered.
One introduced herself as Detective Harris.
She asked Daniel and Chloe to accompany them for an interview.
Daniel protested.
"This is a private business matter!""
Detective Harris answered firmly.
"We're investigating suspected financial fraud and identity misuse. We have questions about several documents bearing your authorization.""
Chloe began speaking rapidly.
"I had nothing to do with any of this.""
Susan, who had arrived with Laura, finally stood.
"That's not true.""
Everyone turned.
Susan placed a printed email on the table.
"You told me exactly what to do.""
Chloe stared at her.
"You ungrateful liar.""
Susan's voice trembled, but she continued.
"I have your messages. I have the recordings. And I have the payment agreement.""
Detective Harris collected the documents.
Daniel looked at Susan with open hatred.
"You have no idea what you've done.""
Susan wiped her eyes.
"Neither did I eighteen years ago. But I'm done lying.""
The investigators escorted Daniel and Chloe out for questioning.
As Daniel passed me, he stopped.
For a moment, I thought he might apologize.
Instead, he whispered:
"You'll regret this, Margaret.""
I looked him directly in the eyes.
"I regretted trusting you for eighteen years. I won't regret telling the truth.""
He walked away.
The president remained seated.
Then he turned toward Michael.
"Mr. Williams, I owe you an apology. We should have requested independent verification before accepting those anonymous accusations.""
Michael nodded.
"I appreciate that.""
The president stood and shook his hand.
"And congratulations again on your graduation.""
When we left the office, the hallway was full of students.
One young woman recognized Michael.
"Hey! You're the valedictorian!""
Michael smiled faintly.
"Yes.""
She looked at me.
"Your speech yesterday made my mother cry.""
I felt tears rise again.
"Mine too," I said.
The girl smiled.
"She told me to call her more often.""
Michael laughed.
For the first time in two days, the tension in his shoulders seemed to ease.
Outside, Laura received a call from the court.
She listened carefully.
Then she turned toward us.
"The judge has ordered an independent audit of the trust.""
Michael nodded.
"And the house?""
"The transfer remains suspended. The county has been instructed not to register any further changes until the dispute is resolved.""
I finally allowed myself to breathe.
Then Laura added:
"There's one more development. Evergreen has located an original trust document that wasn't included in the records we reviewed.""
Michael frowned.
"What document?""
Laura opened the email.
"It appears to be a sealed letter written by your father when the trust was established.""
May you like
She looked at me.
"And according to the administrator, it was addressed to you.""
