Chapter 11: The Account With My Son's Name
Michael stared at the screen.
"That's impossible.""
Laura pulled the laptop closer.
"Let's verify the information before drawing conclusions.""
The account showed his full legal name, date of birth, and an old residential address.
It had been opened eight months earlier.
The registered contact email was unfamiliar.
The listed telephone number belonged to Daniel's investment company.
Michael shook his head.
"I never opened this.""
Laura examined the account summary.
"There's a substantial balance.""
"How much?""
She enlarged the figure.
"$2.1 million.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
"Two million dollars?""
Michael leaned closer.
"Where did that money come from?""
Laura scrolled through the transaction history.
"The initial deposits appear to originate from accounts connected to the family trust.""
Michael's face hardened.
"They were moving money into an account under my name?""
"That's what the records indicate.""
"Why?""
Laura pointed to a description beside the account.
"To make it appear that the trust assets were distributed to you.""
I looked between them.
"Wouldn't that mean Michael received his inheritance?""
"Not necessarily," Laura replied.
"If the account was controlled by someone else, the funds may never have been available to him.""
Michael checked the contact information.
"There's a recovery email.""
He clicked it.
A name appeared.
Chloe Williams.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Michael pushed his chair backward.
"They created an account in my name, moved money into it, and listed me as the beneficiary so they could claim I'd already received the trust.""
Laura nodded.
"That is one possible explanation. We need the institution's original records.""
I looked at my son.
"Can they use that account against you?""
"They may have intended to," Laura said.
"If the money is tied to fraudulent activity, Michael needs to avoid accessing it or moving anything.""
Michael nodded.
"I don't want a dollar of it.""
Laura picked up her phone.
"I'm contacting the bank's fraud department and requesting an immediate preservation notice.""
While she made the call, Michael searched through his emails.
"Mom, look at this.""
He turned the laptop toward me.
It was an email from Daniel, dated three weeks earlier.
Your future is secured, son. Everything has been arranged. All you need to do is sign the final employment and financial documents.
Beneath it was a draft employment contract.
The salary was extraordinary.
But one paragraph caught my attention.
It stated that Michael would assume responsibility for certain outstanding financial obligations connected to the company.
Laura read the clause twice.
"That's not a normal employment provision.""
Michael nodded.
"It makes me responsible for the debt.""
"Potentially, yes. Depending on the final agreement and applicable law.""
I looked at him.
"They wanted you to sign away your future.""
Michael's jaw tightened.
"And use my name to cover the money they took from the trust.""
Laura closed the document.
"This is why you were wise to decline the position.""
A knock interrupted us.
Laura's assistant entered.
"There's someone downstairs asking to see Margaret Williams.""
I frowned.
"Who?""
The assistant hesitated.
"Your sister.""
Michael stood immediately.
"Tell her to leave.""
I shook my head.
"No. Let her come up.""
A few minutes later, Susan entered the office.
She looked nothing like the confident woman in the photograph.
Her makeup was smudged.
Her hands trembled.
She wore the same beige coat she'd worn the last time we'd met at Christmas, three years earlier.
"Margaret.""
I didn't stand.
"What do you want?""
She glanced at Michael.
"I need to explain.""
"Then explain.""
Susan looked toward Laura.
"Can we speak privately?""
"No," I answered.
Her eyes filled.
"I made a terrible mistake.""
"You made several.""
She sat down.
"Daniel told me the trust had already been transferred. He said the money belonged to Michael, but he couldn't access it because of some tax restrictions.""
Michael leaned forward.
"Why did you receive $750,000?""
Susan lowered her head.
"I was promised it.""
"Promised?""
"He said I would receive it after the property transfer and liquidation were completed.""
I stared at her.
"So you knew exactly what you were helping them do.""
She shook her head.
"I didn't know everything.""
"But you knew enough.""
Susan began crying.
"I had creditors threatening me. My business was collapsing. Daniel offered to clear my debts.""
Michael looked disgusted.
"With money stolen from our family?""
"He said it was his money!""
"Then why use Mom's identity?""
Susan had no answer.
Laura placed a printed email on the table.
"Ms. Miller, we have a copy of your correspondence with Mr. Williams. Would you like to explain this message?""
Susan read it.
Her face went white.
The email contained a conversation between her and Chloe.
One line was highlighted.
Once Margaret's property is transferred, the trust will be clean. Michael will have no grounds to challenge the distribution.
I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
"You knew they were trying to take my house.""
Susan whispered, "Yes.""
"And you knew Michael was being cut out.""
She nodded.
I looked away.
"Why?""
She covered her face.
"Because I was selfish.""
Those three words hurt more than any excuse.
Michael stood.
"Did you ever care about us?""
Susan looked up.
"Of course I did.""
"Then how could you do this?""
"I thought I could fix everything afterward.""
Michael shook his head.
"You can't steal someone's future and call it temporary.""
Laura slid a document across the table.
"Ms. Miller, if you have evidence of the planning and communications behind this transaction, now is the time to provide it. Any cooperation must be truthful and complete.""
Susan looked at the paper.
Then she reached into her handbag and removed a small flash drive.
"I have something.""
Michael frowned.
"What is it?""
"Chloe sent me copies of the instructions. She told me to delete them after the transfer.""
Laura took the drive.
"Do you know what's on it?""
Susan nodded.
"Emails, recordings, and a draft agreement.""
"Between whom?""
Susan looked at me.
"Daniel, Chloe, and Robert Hensley.""
I felt my heartbeat quicken.
"What does the agreement say?""
Susan swallowed.
"It says what they planned to do with the trust, the house, and Michael's account.""
Michael leaned forward.
"Give it to the attorney.""
Susan placed the drive on the table.
Then she whispered something else.
"There's one more recording.""
Laura looked up.
"What recording?""
Susan began crying again.
"The night Daniel abandoned you, he didn't leave because his company was failing.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
Susan looked directly at me.
"He had already started moving the trust money. And he was afraid you'd discover it.""
Michael froze.
"How do you know?""
Susan wiped her cheeks.
"Because I was there that night.""
I felt the room tilt.
"You were there?""
She nodded.
"I was outside the apartment when he came back for the papers. I heard him talking to Robert on the phone.""
"What did he say?""
May you like
Susan closed her eyes.
"He said, 'Once Margaret signs, the boy will never know what belonged to him.''"
