Chapter 9: The Woman Who Ordered Sarah's Death
I turned toward Melissa.
She was shaking so badly that she had to grip the hallway table.
“Ryan, I can explain.””
I stared at her.
“You were involved in the accident?””
“No!””
“Then why does Dad say you ordered it?””
My father gave a small, humorless smile.
“Because she did.””
Melissa shook her head violently.
“Arthur, stop lying!””
He opened his folder and removed a printed email.
He handed it to me.
The sender was Melissa's old personal email address.
The recipient was an unknown number associated with a private security company.
The subject line read:
*Make sure Sarah cannot reach Ryan.*
I read the message.
She has the documents. She knows about the twins. I don't care what you have to do, but she cannot get to Ryan before the birth.
My hands began trembling.
I looked at Melissa.
“Did you send this?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“It's your email address.””
“He stole my password.””
My father laughed.
“Convenient.””
I looked at the date.
The message had been sent two days before the accident.
“Melissa, tell me the truth.””
She began crying.
“Sarah called me that afternoon. She said she had discovered something about you.””
“About me?””
“She said Bennett had been conducting genetic tests without your knowledge.””
My stomach tightened.
“What tests?””
“She told me there was something wrong with the original fertility agreement. Something about your biological father.””
I glanced at the document in my hand.
My father was listed as my biological father.
“What did she discover?””
Melissa took a breath.
“She said the embryo used to create you wasn't created using a donor egg.””
I stared at her.
“Then whose egg was used?””
She looked at my father.
He suddenly became very still.
Melissa whispered, “Your biological mother was Sarah's mother.””
The room tilted.
I felt as though someone had punched me in the chest.
“My mother?””
Melissa nodded.
“Sarah's mother, Margaret.””
I looked at the medical file again.
The woman who had carried me as a surrogate was actually my biological mother.
But that meant something else.
Sarah and I shared the same biological mother.
We weren't just husband and wife.
We were half-siblings.
I stepped backward.
“No.””
Melissa began sobbing.
“Sarah didn't know when you got married. Neither did I. She found out during the pregnancy when Bennett ran the genetic tests.””
I shook my head.
“Stop.””
“Ryan—”
“STOP!””
My father looked down.
For once, he had no clever response.
I remembered Sarah's face when we first met.
Her laugh.
The way she used to hold my hand.
Our wedding.
Our plans for children.
Every memory seemed to collapse under the weight of what I was hearing.
“Did Sarah know the truth before she died?””
Melissa nodded.
“She found out six months into the pregnancy.””
“Why didn't she leave me?””
“Because she loved you. She said you were both victims of Arthur's lies.””
I turned toward my father.
“You knew?””
He remained silent.
“You knew Sarah and I were related?””
“Yes.””
My knees nearly gave way.
“And you let us get married?””
He finally spoke.
“The medical records were sealed. I thought there was no chance you'd discover the connection.””
I stared at him in disbelief.
“You thought?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“I had spent thirty years protecting the family. I wasn't going to destroy everything because of a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
He looked at the floor.
“Your marriage was a mistake.””
My mother began crying again.
I turned toward her.
“Did you know?””
She shook her head.
“No, Ryan. I swear. I only discovered the truth after Sarah died.””
I wanted to believe her.
But nothing in that house felt trustworthy anymore.
Melissa stepped closer.
“Ryan, that's why I sent the email.””
I turned.
“What?””
“I didn't know your father would arrange an accident. I wanted Sarah stopped before she exposed the genetic records. I was afraid the truth would destroy you.””
“So you hired someone to stop her?””
“I contacted a security company. I thought they'd take the documents.””
“Your message says you didn't care what they had to do.””
She covered her face.
“I was desperate.””
My father interrupted.
“She knew exactly what she was doing.””
Melissa suddenly turned on him.
“And you paid them!””
He went silent.
I looked between them.
“Who actually caused the accident?””
My father took a long breath.
“An independent contractor was instructed to intercept Sarah. Your mother was supposed to recover the documents afterward.””
My mother collapsed onto a chair.
“You told me she was going to be fine!””
My father ignored her.
“Things went wrong.””
I felt sick.
A woman I had loved was dead because everyone around her had decided their secrets mattered more than her life.
I pulled out my phone and called the police again.
“I'm reporting a suspected murder conspiracy, illegal adoption, child endangerment, and document fraud. I have recordings and physical evidence.””
My father stepped toward me.
“You'll destroy this family.””
I looked at him.
“You destroyed it five years ago.””
Then I walked toward the nursery.
The floorboards near the old rocking chair looked slightly different.
I knelt and pulled at one.
It came loose.
Beneath it was a metal box.
Inside lay a thick blue ledger, several memory cards, and a sealed envelope addressed to me.
I opened the envelope.
Sarah's handwriting covered the first page.
My darling Ryan, if you've found this, then our children are finally safe.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
But the second paragraph made my blood run cold.
There's one more thing you need to know. The twins aren't the only children connected to this program.
I read the next line.
Before I discovered the truth, Bennett showed me a photograph of a third baby. He said that child was created from the same genetic material used to create you.
I looked up.
“Another child?””
Melissa covered her mouth.
My father closed his eyes.
Then my phone rang.
The hospital.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
A nurse spoke quickly.
“Mr. Mitchell, your daughter Lily is asking for you. But there's been an incident.””
My heart stopped.
“What happened?””
“Someone came to her room claiming to be a family member. They presented legal documents and attempted to remove her.””
“Who?””
The nurse hesitated.
Then she said:
“Your father's attorney.””
I looked at the blue ledger.
My father was already moving toward the front door.
And before I could stop him, he turned and said:
“By tomorrow morning, Ryan, you'll understand why I needed all three children.””
I looked down at Sarah's letter.
At the bottom of the final page was a name I'd never seen before.
*Subject C-03: Daniel Mitchell.*

My father had a third child.
And judging by the date on the document, that child was already twenty-six years old.
